(new)Found out there is a media limit when making posts so I will only keep the work in progress songs here and the completed ones can be found at soundcloud.com/kylefigula(new)

(old)I'm not used to making electronic music and would like to know if I'm going in the right direction, thanks.(old)

Some song names thanks to Xsze - http://audiosex.pro/index.php?/user/3557-xsze

The main part sounds like it should be the background music for an video game. Like in an RPG when you're in a town, but with a distorted bass.

I would suggest using a more traditional arrangement method. As it is, it's basically the same thing over and over. Slightly different drums and parts with and without the distorted bass. There's nothing really to distinguish the different parts. Also some type of interlude/break that wasn't the same 4 notes would help.

If you're used to acoustic/electric music writing use the same methods and transpose them to the genre you want to do.

hi, i've got some feedback for you:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iMTJAIVaS0

    sorry, couldnt help myself.

    :P

so now for your actual feedback:

YES!!! YOU ARE HEADED IN THE RIGHT PATH!!!!!!

your music already interests me more than alot of what is posted here... i like the pure experimentation of it

i agree with what xoso said about it being perfect for a video game soundtrack

i disagree with what xoso said about "using a more traditional arrangement method"

    IT'S A TRAP!

i understand what xoso meant about changing it up, and you will get there, but for now concentrate on variations on a theme as opposed to full orchestration

you change it up alot more than many house songs do, but he was quite right about the need to keep the audience interested...but in this case i was entertained the whole time

you can keep the song as is and just add some subtle tweaks to the existing sounds to make them change it up, especially near the last 2/3 of the song, using philter-like sweeps and what not, some automated variation usiny any x-y controller would work magic

the actual mastering of the track will come later after you've locked down the mixing

i like the choice of sounds you have arranged so far, looking forward to more

dont be afraid to post and ask questions all you want, there are alot of friendly people here

    cheers

Well by traditional I meant things like intro's/chorus'/breaks/interludes/outro's and such. And if he's used to actual instrument arrangements he's probably used to more formulaic things. Not that he should do the same thing, but he could progress faster by taking things from genre's he's used to and incorporating in what he's trying to do. In essance, bringing some of his old style to his new genre thus making this new genre part of him at the same time. Like Xsze said about not copying someone elses style and making the genre your own.

I agree with the whole "dont listen to the genre you're writing". Your idea's start getting too based on other people stuff. Even if it's original you'll still start learning towards narrowed styles. Especially in electronic music it's all about experimentation.

Personally when I'm writing a song in any genre I try to imagine not just the finished product but what other people would hear. Say if your doing stuff for a club, you want to imagine how the song would play out for a average person dancing in a club, imagine how the lights would interact, and how people would react to your music playing the changes etc. Not sure how you imagine the people who you'd want to listen to your music, but it could help to try to see the big picture to help give you clues.

When I write my music It comes to me in my head with a music video, that basically helps me not only write the "mood" of the music but gives me cues on how parts should go. It doesn't help for some people but some it opens their world. Just something to consider.

I fixed your SoundCloud widgets but now it says the track is unavailable. Did you take it down?

Cool I was worried I might have messed something up accidentally. And let me give you a tip when posting things on these forums: if it says https always remove the s and it will work perfectly as a widget and you don't need to use the media tag, I think it works without it.

Thanks for letting me know that :) . Although I think I'll keep the media code there because it feels more organized to me.
