    What sort of books?

Fiction, fact, biographies, history, what? If fiction then what genre and so on?

    Some of my favorites:

Lord of the Flies (W. Golding)
Notes from the underground (F. Dostoevsky)
Anything from F. Kafka, but mainly The trial, in the penal colony, the metamorphosis
The red and the black (Stendhal)
Alice's adventures in wonderland (l. Carroll)
The portrait of Dorian Gray (Oscar Wilde)
For whom the bell tolls (E. Hemingway)
    1984 (G. Orwell)
    A clockwork orange (A. Burgess)
    Heart of darkness (J. Conrad)
    Solaris (S. Lem)
    The stranger (A. Camus)
    Brave new world (A. Huxley)
    Steppenwolf (H. Hesse)

Yes, reading improves your English a great deal. But genres are a very personal thing. I listed some classics/philosophical stuff because they tend to transcend genres a bit, as they touch human conditions which are almost universal. Depending on your level, you should start with abridged (simplified) editions.

For sci-fi I'd recommend works of John Scalzi and Charlie Stross.

Stross' "Accelerando" is available for free: http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/fiction/accelerando/accelerando-intro.html

Scalzi used to be a journalist and his English is very straightforward (but not necessarily simple!), I'd recommend "Old Man's War" and "God Engines".

Stross' "Atrocity Archive" series is one of my favourites, but try Accelerando first.

Books are something very personal, therefore difficult to recommend. You have to search for the ones you like!

By dint of the complexity and unbridled branching out of life, there's not much time to read books. If you read a book, there are so many problems that you will probably forget the text of the book soon.

The various topics are often misleading. I think it's better to focus on certain topics so that you can at least use them in life.

DFW is not something I would recommend for somebody wanting to brush up on one's English.

That said, "Shipping Out - On the (nearly lethal) comforts of a luxury cruise" is a terrific read.

(Yes, I've read the "Infinite Jest", and I would not easily recommend that to anyone.)
