Hey guys and gals, I'm sure this is easy for some of you, but I've heard this instrument in a few songs and I just don't know what it is.

Starting at 2:07. It's about 8 bars, and mixed with guitars and other instruments.

It seems like a magical sound to me. I won't sleep till I find it!

 

It's nicely sculpted and mixed! I think that's key.
And I guess it may have been a sampler rather than a synth back then, as Moogerfooger also said.

I agree. The production really makes these tracks shine. There's a lot to dig in this LP that took a very long time to grow on me.

 

My pa's profession with them was in the visual side of it, not our profession.
But I remember it was good because we got video mixes of tracks.
I don't think there's a lot of music nowadays that sounds as soulful and well mixed as this, and other stuff from the time.
