I am 100% sure that no one is using music theory properly.

There's a lot of training in music theory, from beginner to advanced. But the bottom line is that knowing music theory is one thing and using it appropriately is another thing.

Applying theory requires a deep understanding of its concepts. Unfortunately, the existing trainings don't provide much deep understanding of it. Another problem is that even with deep understanding, it cannot be effectively implemented in music production.

When there's no deep understanding of theory, people start making things like pop, rock, jazz, electronic and the like, and they can't produce great things for the rest of their lives.

If there's anyone who has a different opinion or has reached a level of deep understanding that is able to implement it rigorously in his/her works, please makes this discussion fruitful.

    Thanks!:thanks:

Here we go, Foster's like, false questions.
You are not asking for a debate, you are (again) willing to prove/tell your own smoking theories, which pass through a judgement of what artist does.
    Define "great things" lol
Also, I have a deep understanding in music theory, but yet I'm (luckily) able to enjoy, Jazz, Funk, EDM, Pop, Blues etc ... Simply because I'm not pedant, even if I write classical music too.
Music is about expression and transmission,
it's not about building / demoing complexity.

But you certainly understand this art better than anyone and are generously willing to teach the world ... Like Foster. :deep_facepalm:

Great music is not just about theory. Even without much theory many great musicians made great music and performances full of feeling, emotion, originality, inovation.

"...Another problem is that even with deep understanding, it cannot be effectively implemented in music production...."

I've been using music theory in music production for 30+ years....I maybe haven't produced many great things as such, but some OK things I hope.

"...When there's no deep understanding of theory, people start making things like pop, rock, jazz, electronic and the like, and they can't produce great things for the rest of their lives...."

I've been playing jazz (mostly) and pop, rock for over 40 years....using music theory from day one. It's just part of the tool kit....although I have to say in at least one regard, I don't know many jazz players who have no deep understanding of theory...

Foster, you sad plague, learn to speak in first person. i translated your meaningless crap to understand what you are "saying"..
"There's a lot of training in music theory, from beginner to advanced. But the bottom line is that I dont know music theory and I dont know how to use it appropriately "
"Applying theory requires a deep understanding of its concepts. But I really dont have a f¤%cking clue and I'm to much of a lazy bastard to study it therefor i cant implement it in music production and therefor i spend my life spamming this forum and hating musicians"
"Since I dont have any deeper understanding of theory and I dont have the slightest trace of talent, I start making things like pop, rock, jazz, electronic and the like, and still I can't produce anything worthwhile, it all sounds like sh%t"
"I have an anus, if there's anyone who has a different opinion, please make this discussion fruitful"

I studied music at a Conservatory for years, studied saxophone (alto, like ma boy Cannon Ball Adderley) and trumpet, played guitar for like 20 years, and bass and piano, and I have deep understanding of music theory, and still when I try to compose something (mostly orchestral stuff) it sounds weak. Maybe I just have the knowledge, but not the talent. As Olymoon said, is not about complexity but expression.
(Zappa would say that I don't have the knowledge but just the information: "Information is not knowledge / Knowledge is not wisdom / Wisdom is not truth / Truth is not beauty / Beauty is not love / Love is not music / Music is the best")

Knowledge is useless without application... You can study all the theory you want but it is useless you find a way to use in consistently in your compositions.. I went to Uni for Jazz guitar. Theory is very useful.

The same guy who wrote this piece also wrote, pop, rock, and as well as a few classical pieces, boleros and even country music. Imagine what he could have done if actually understood and applied music theory as well as you :)

    Hhmmm...
see if anybody lets you near a patient in an operating room as you gleefully swing a scalpel around proudly shouting:
'I never understood one single word of the theory of this surgery malarkey, ever... why would I need to? Now let me open him up'.

    just sayin.

A lot of people seem to have this shit-tard habit of not being able to speak for themselves. So they say dumb things like "Everyone this, and everyone that," instead of using the personal pronoun "I".

Or any music tool properly. Or his computer keyboard, hence the inability to pose an inquiry in good faith.

Henry Mancini started with a flute playing with his dad, then moved on to the piano and arranging with Max Adkins who was a concert pianist and the director and concert maestro of the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh. This was all while he was still in high school, after high school he went to Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) did some work for Benny Goodman who told him to ditch Pittsburgh and go to New York and who probably used a little influence to get him into Julliard. He went there for a year and then had to go and the WWII. While doing the WWII and fighting with Nazis and Italian Fascists, he got himself reassigned to U.S. Army band and worked with Tony Martin who got him hooked up with a piano gig with some guy called Glen Miller, who had his own orchestra.

He went to Carnegie Mellon for 1/2 a year and went to Julliard for 1/2 a year but he made the most of what had. Also, even though he had great talent Henry Mancini was one luck SOB.

Great now we've traded grade school book reports.

Now just imagine if he had finished his studies or knew as much as Epcot about musics.

And what's your deep understanding if this? Only a person with actual factual representation of said insanity could explain. Well? What makes you think a person with "no deep understanding of theory" creates rock, and the like? I would love to hear where you pulled that out of :phunk:
