    Hello

I am looking at getting another pair of headphones to replace my KRK 8400's and am looking at the Beyer Dynamic 990S Pro (250 ohm)

What do people make of them?

are they flat response or near enough?

No, Beyer = loudness. Try AKG K371. Best studio monitor closed headphones, great price, neutral signature.

Depends on context, I'd say. If you are working in a daw, a lot of headphones can be corrected using sonarworks reference which I find an indispensable tool (toneboosters morphit is also a good alternative). Now, if you want flat response and somehow you can't access digital correction Shure SRH840 are among the flattest closed sets that I know. Shure 1540 and Oppo PM3 are even flatter and also significantly more expensive. If you are willing/able to use digital correction, then the Beyerdynamic DT240 is a steal, well constructed and take digital correction beautifully. Now, you mention DT990 which is open, my favourite open headphone workhorses are the DT840 (semi open) and the HD650/6XX. The Beyer takes digital correction perfectly, the Senn does too but it is flatter before correction, you might even skip the correction completely if not mixing sub bass heavy music.

Both confirmed. I'm also using the very comfortable 770 which has great isolation from the outside world but you better not rely on the Beyers for mixing and mastering. What sounds good on them will easily sound flat and boring elsewhere.
Great for listening to music though!

they are treble cannons, i have the phillips shp9500 wich have a little treble boost and i feel that is too much sometimes, and that beyerdinamics 990 have a MASSIVE peak at 9khz, so they are for people with hearing problems lol

I have a Pair and love mine. been using them for years. good flat response and really comfortable. mine are several years old now and still my daily drivers i would recommend them to anyone. ( my musical spectrum is rock/industrial/shoe gaze/soundtrack & sound design) i cant speak for how they perform in electronica/Hip Hop and things of that nature because that aint my bag normally

Great headphones. Every single part of them is replaceable. I recently restored my 8-year-old pair. Like new now.
Great sound, great build quality. In Europe best bang for the buck if you ask me. They have the typical Beyer highs, but nothing you can not fix with a correction software or an eq if you want to.

    Edit :
The fixed cable is the only thing that bothers me

I have the beyer dt990 pro for many years... they are great if you ask me. What ever I do on my headphones it translates for me to the big speakers or in my car. Meaning, I am never surprised how different the songs sound when switching to different speakers.

That's what reference tracks whilst mixing are for...you mix against the comparable reference material not just your own track. Or use Sonarworks or similar to flatten them - simples. I mix in DT770s all the time it's all about knowing their weaknesses and using reference tracks.

Exactly, headphones are no different than monitors. You still need to learn how they respond and how to accommodate for them. The DT990s are great. They're a little ice picky at first, but that's why you keep using them and wait for them to break in like any other pair of speakers and they settle in just fine and work great. I can go back and forth between mine and my Tannoy's and not have any trouble getting a mix done.

Someone said somewhere online that they are a bit Bassey, not sure how true that is

love my 990's, I'd say they're not necessarily bassy in the sense of its too much, but more theres a nice rounded punchy bass response from them, to my ears at least! I normally mix on JBL 305s, and only had those active noise cancelling bose to use for cans - which translated very bad for me - even with sonarworks ( I understand now why they were a bad choice). Needless to say, the 990's were cheaper than the bose, huge jump in my mix quality, and even listening back to music is MUCH more enjoyable.

I`m waiting for the new Sennheiser 560S.. Look it up.. One of the flattest headphones at around 200€. It can rival with the HD600/650 but 100€ cheaper.. Open back tho.. I can give my feedback when they arrive this week.. i had the 770 250ohm and yes they are not my couple of tea.. 990 seems to much of a smile eq.. maybe if i don`t like the 560S i will try the Beyer DT880.. they seem to be more neutral than the 990..

I have a set of 990s. I bought them because it was one of the presets in Sonarworks Reference and they work great together.

The DT990s and DT770s are both really comfy - wear mine for hours without a problem.

Do you find that you don't have that normal feeling of pressure on your ears

Like I am wearing KRK 8400S and because they are closed backs I get a pressure feeling which then gives me headache - do you get that with these headphones or not?
