    Hey guys,

i am going to upgrade my PC soon and i decided ill go full AMD(GPU propably RX 6800 XT), and i am thinking which CPU is better for music production? Here is specifications:

    5950X:
    CPU Cores:16
    Threads: 32
    Base Clock: 3.4GHz
Max Boost Clock: Up to 4.9GHz

    5900X:
    CPU Cores: 12
    Threads: 24
    Base Clock 3.7GHz
    Max Boost Clock:Up to 4.8GHz

I wanna go hard with overclocking. So i suppose AMD Ryzen 9 5950X overclocked to like 4.7 GHZ atleast with really good cooling should do the job right? Biggest reason i am writing this, is that 5900X has better single core performance, but if you overclock to same max clock, at the end you can get same results(theoreticly i guess) right?. 5950X is about 300+ Euro compared to 5900X tho, so i am not sure if the difference of that 4 cores is worth for music production/gaming.

TLDR; If we talk about pure performance, than 5950X overclocked to like 4,7 is the way.
If talk about money wise than 5900X i suppose?

Ill go DDR4 with 64GB 3200+ mhz aswell

Thank you for any help :)

    Following.
I am in the exact same position ;) We should probably wait for some benchmarks to come out ? What I have seen (very little info out) is that the 5950x has the best single core speed even compared to the 10900k (source?), Are you planning any video/graphic intensive work ? I am, and that's why I leaning towards the 16core... it's seems to be *the* beast in terms of single core + multithread. But I'm no expert, if the 12 core can be equally as good, then man it is quite cheaper !!
EDIT: I think we are currently going into a world where CPU speed (gHz) is no longer the main thing to look at, the IPC, architecture, etc seems to be what makes all the difference, so lower gHz speeds is not necessary worse than the competition...

Bad memory for a AMD system. Should be optimized memory for AMD and higher mhz.

6800 XT for audio? I guess you're building a gaming PC anyway,

well, for audio tasks, you need sustained boost frequency, so you'll be most likely overclocking, and trying to achieve same boost across all cores - purely from this point of view, less cores on 5900X will be better, because they won't heat as much and will clock higher (do note advertised boost clock is for only one core, and very short period of time, which is basically useless),
don't expect 5950X running at 4.7GHz on all 16 cores, I highly doubt that,

imo for audio production, I'd say 12 cores 24 threads is a very nice futureproof choice, though maybe something like 5800X with 8 cores 16 threads would be good enough 90% of the time as well (unless you're into really heavy compositions/projects),

about memory, for 5000 series Ryzens, rumours say DDR4-4000 MHz is the optimal, keep an eye on CAS/CL latency spec, higher value means worse, so I guess CL18 or CL19 is what to expect at 4000MHz rated RAM, or maybe get 4800MHz CL19 rated RAM, depends how much performance you want to squeeze from the new Ryzens,

and since you're going for such beasty cpu, I would indeed pick 64GB capacity as bare minimum, would highly consider 128GB kit (for less hassle compared to upgrading with matching 64GB kit later)

actually the new Ryzens are more efficient at IPC (=instructions per clock), so even though they go lower than 10th gen Intel in terms of cpu frequency, they seem to outperform Intel, that's definitely an interesting turn of events and I'm wondering what Intel will do about it,
also it's worth noting, Ryzens are more dependant on RAM when it comes to performance, so definitely not skip on purchasing proper high-clocked low-CL RAM when pairing with such Ryzen cpus

and 5900X seems to offer best bang for the buck actually!:

PS: forget 5800X, it's a terrible deal for what it does, I'd say the choice for audio is basically 5900X vs 5600X, depending on how many cpu cores someone's workflow in a given DAW actually utilizes

I see this post and think,
save your Money, as an example: My System is actually .....
    AMD Ryzen 9 3950X 16-Core Processor (870F10) Runs @ 4450 on CCX1 and 4375 on CCX2 with 1,225 Volt
Colling is a Noctua NH D15 SE-AM4 and under normal load it doesn`t kick the 50° (Idle 30°-32°)
ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. ROG CROSSHAIR VIII HERO
BIOS ver. 2206 SMU ver. 46.63.00
    64GB Crucial DDR4 - DRAM speed 3200 MHz
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 TI
    2x Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 1TB
    3x Crucial CT2000MX500SSD1 2TB

I use Presonus Studio One 5.1 and nothing, really nothing kills this machine.
I tried somthing like this and "this" make in my opinion no sense for daily use in any Studio (maybe some Movie Production ??)
20 Instances of Diva with very high load + 10 Instances of Kontatkt 6.4 with a complete sample data of 41GB (Orch Libs)
4 Inserts per Channel, something like Compressors, Limiters, Delays and Reverbs (Studio One Host Plugs) results in 120 activ PlugIns
Per Track i generated a simple Melody chord and copied this to every VSTi Instance (entirely mindless, sounds like chaos).
But ....this test bunk brings this machine to 78% with no dropout !!! Audio @ 48khz 24bit over Motu Ultra Lite MK4

Yes, i think it`s nice to have a new 5950, but for what ??? ........ in my opinion :winker:

Until stock resucites one can only look youtubers that receive the few available. But even so it's early to know about stable overclockings.

There's one video at the "Gamer Meld" channel but not very deep, but check it if you feel like:

Disclaimer: this channel is good, it does clickbait on the titles but only in the titles
Edited: the ones posted by @tzzsmk and @Jeff* are way better, I usually only look at short tech videos just for news

5900 should be plenty, but I guess it'll depend on what you prefer to run in your DAW.
If you use Diva on a lot of tracks or any other CPU hungry plugins, then go for the 5950 for extra core count/headroom, else, save your money. Also for the GPU, this I guess will be an all round machine as if it's just for music production, it's an absolute overkill!
Apparently, more chips getting delivered to suppliers over the next week or so, but many are taking pre-orders, so get in the queue!

Thank you everyone for your answers! I forgot to say that i am gonna use my PC for some gaming aswell. Aswell i use mainly FL studio, with nothing too crazy but like serum, spire, kontakt, omnisphere and some all around mixing vsts. I need to ugprade my pc since my current cpu is i7-4790K and on lower buffer size stuff can go crazy xD

As for CPU, i decided to go for 5900X(or atleast when they become avaible).
So it would be like this:
CPU: 5900X with cooling Noctua NH D15 SE-AM4(or some similiar AIR cooling, fuck water :) )
GPU: 6800/6800XT(will check benchmarks when they release)
    RAM: CL16 32 GB 4000 mhz - https://www.gskill.com/product/165/166/1597040949/F4-4000C16D-32GTZR
Motherboard: ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII DARK HERO X570(will see the price when they release it, might go with HERO version only)
    PSU: ?
Case: ? Some airflow medium case tower

Pretty interesting video, but not sure about that dynamic OC switch. You think its worth to look into that?

Damn, I already knew it but still after seeing those videos I feel shocked. Intel is swept away so badly
I think it's more about the chip self-management that pure temperatures (cooling). But yeah, once overclocked single-core performance should be almost the same.

Heck, I can barely wait to Radeon 6000 3rd party reviews :wink:

It is recommended to let the system boost naturally. Once configured properly & paired with a 6800XT graphics card, you should be good for years to come. The 5900X CPU is being recommended for the average workstation user.
