70's

First started listening to a mixture of Rock and Roll, Folk, and classical. I was given a massive box of 33's and got my first taste of what music I liked instead of what my parents force upon me

80's
Hit me with some Floyd please, these guys became a heavy influence on me.

At some point in the early 80's I got heavilly in to Metal, leaning heavilly towards AC/DC, Motorhead, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden etc. I remember some of a Motorhead concert, most of it is a distant blur now.

Then Breakdance came on the scene which took over my obsession for all things guitar, and my first taste of 808s, samples and remixes.

Metal came back for a few years, until Acid House and warehouse parties came on the scene. This was going to be my choice of music for many years to come, getting more and more in to prog rock. Pink Floyd and Marillion being my go to choice. Henrix, SRV, the Dead, the Doors

90's
Rave hit the scene, bit time and so did I. Flip flopping between all the different genres, I didn't care as long as the bass was thumping, the crowd was happy and the visuals intense.

Bangra joined me for a while, and so did Ambient and various new age styles (Ozrics being one memorable), and Acid Jazz.

I remember spending a few years only listening to Blues, playing blues and living blues.

00's
Dylan and Young became a big part of my life for years, even down to the obscure albums. He got me back in to playing acoustic for most of the early 00's before spending a while in hip hop and hard trance. Got back in to the Dead, This was a pretty messy part of my life.

Listening now to the softer side of electronic music, mainly trance.

10's
Loving Nu-Jazz, and so did various Jam bands (Gov't mule, Mumford, String Cheese incident) made up for thea early part of this decade, getting back into playing electric guitar again.

I now listen to mostly to Techno, a genre I really didn't like in my rave days.


So many people seem stuck in one genre, I can't seem to stay in any one

 

The simple reason most of them were superficially attractive to you was because each of them gradually introduced you to new sounds and new basic techniques. You have actually been electrified and attracted to the secondary features and petty details of music.

Those years that you laconically mentioned are the years that set a lot of people's minds on fire due to the renewal of the music scene and introduction of non-musical ideas into the world of music. Most of those genres don't have remarkable abilities to convey pure concepts of music, and in the end, like dead creatures that piled up on top of each other and turned into oil, are useful only for burning.

 

What is the concept of music? Ask 100 people and you'll get varied answers, to me it depends on the genre. Sometimes it is about being "musical", other times it is about the message or the change in perception. I can get lost in classical music, and trance for totally different reasons. I can get lost in Floyd, or Dylan for totally different reasons alltogether
