The very nice folks at Eset have told me that my Win 7 32bit OS is out the window.

They told me that my product will "soon lose protection" and to verify that "you have installed Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) with latest Windows updates (at least KB4474419 and KB4490628)".

When I d/l those KBs and installed them it hosed my PC totally, prevented it from booting and displayed an unhelpful microsoft boot error screen. Nice one, thank you.

My system has been running well for years and I'm not about to jump through microsoft's planned-redundancy obstacle course. This may mean that I have to end my relationship with Eset, take my PC offline and look for other means to say safe.

It's been good to know you Eset.

After that bitter-pill rant I want to ask here what my options might be. I really, really, really don't want nothing to do with Win 10. :guru::dont:

    Any tips appreciated thank you.

One option could be win7sp1, with ZoneAlarm, it's free and works perfectly.

    Thanks @Olymoon - here's Esets reply:

"Since SHA-1 code signing support was discontinued throughout the IT industry due to security weakness, all vendors are moving to SHA-2. That said, SHA-2 support will become mandatory soon and there won't be any current version of antivirus that will work on non-SHA2 compliant operating systems. It was not the choice of ESET".

I didn't know ZoneAlarm was giving itself away. Very unlike them :)

    https://www.zonealarm.com/software/free-firewall/
Includes antivirus and firewall all very configurable.

I understand their argument about SHA2 but I will resit as long as I can.

A good Microsoft system, is an abandoned by Microsoft system lol
So when they drop win10 it will probably be prefect.

OP,do you work with outboard gear or do you make music with VI and plugins??
Many recent 64 bits plugins are very good,I would feel like I'm missing some goodies if I was stuck with a 32 bits setup.

About the thread, those antiviruses are the viruses.Secret services of governments use these antiviruses to spy your computer.I read that on wikileaks.I prefer to keep away from these things.

you only need someonewhocares hosts file...ghostery anti track..ublock origin...taskmanager(or better advanced taskmanager lke process explorer)..netstat -ano...optional a app who tracks registry
    antivirus apps are a joke
and you dont need very latest win7 updates in puncto safety
but also with latest updates and av i always would use new fresh linux boot from dvd for banking, business etc#
the only thing i would use av is for convenient scanning of emails if i had to open a lot per day..
downoad content from unknown source always scan with virustotal

just stay on seven and use zone alarm

Hi @Blue - I use both hardware and software to make big and interesting sounds, wrap myself up in them and see what comes out the other end. I'm a very untrained, undisciplined profoundly deaf musician :)

"My system has been running well for years".

There. You know that saying about fixing what's not broken? Just uninstall all AV crap, your OS will run much faster and with less annoying problems which AVs usually cause. If you must have Internet in your audio OS, stick to a few websites you trust, install uOrigin and NoScript, and continue making music.

If you're so worried about the security, which is reasonable thinking nowadays, dual booting with Linux is an option you could consider, or booting Linux from a live CD, but that's quite slow. Just use any disk you have lying on the side for Linux and you're good to go. I can recommend Debian 9 with Mate Desktop for older computers, and new v10 for new [like 2018 up] computers. What you can also do is install VirtualBox and Linux or Windows in it, for Internet browsing, that's extremely secure and boots within seconds when you make a snapshot of the OS. When you're finished browsing you get back to this clean snapshot.

Having a virtual OS installed is the best and quickest to use option, really. It can also serve for testing plugins, and testing for viruses.

Cheers! I hope you'll manage to make a working system and be able to make music without any problems [or less, actually ;)]! :headbang:

Although, I would recommend you to install a fresh and clean Windows 7 *Professional* [uses less resources and you won't miss anything] SP1 and possibly "lite" version, with the most important patches already installed and x64 version, then reinstalling the music programs and whatever else you need. Setup the MS services on it according to your needs, with a great help from blackviper website.

Btw. you probably know you can run both x86 and x64 programs on x64 W7? So you can set it up however you want, with older x86 programs + you have an option to run x64 programs.

Funny that. I've never heard of Microsoft GIVING a past-due-date operating system away. The only way Microsoft give anything away is if it can be grabbed back again. One day all that wealth and power won't be worth a hill of beans.

Run an old OS then run old software. I never understood you guys that are petrified to upgrade yet immediately start crying when you cant run the latest stuff. Win 10 has been out for many years and runs flawlessly, no need to be scared anymore.

Update: Eset, via different forum staff members, have made sure that I understand that it's not their fault. I do do do understand.

But I also question that the deeply ingrained redundancy process is just the 'normal' software/hardware evolutionary ladder unfolding over time.

I question that huge software and hardware corporations who have enormous investments in power, profits, wealth, market domination and secrecy do not participate in out-with-the-old, in-with-the-new strategies and lock-step behaviour - what some might describe as cabals that send ripples right through to the fringes of this industry.

This is just how our addicted monkey brains operate, along with a total disregard and lack of social responsibility when it comes to toxic waste and pollution.

    As a complement about SHA2.
Yesterday, I had to install a new graphic card. While installing the drivers, the installer stopped half way and asked me to download and install 2 patches, providing the links, to make the necessary change so my win7 could be compatible with their SHA2 driver. The the installer run again and all worked fine.
So, it seems that it is not impossible for a company to make their product working on win7 besides SHA2.

Shadow Defender and Eset 10 is all you need. It doesn't need updating because you only need the firewall side of it.

    how it works:-

Shadow defender takes a snapshot of your system when you boot up. Every change you make (whether good OR bad) is made only on that snapshot, so when you turn your computer off and on again, it takes a new snapshot from the original saved settings. ZERO chance of viruses but still the use of ESET's great firewall

Shadow Defender is available at all good torrent stores.. If ya know what I mean. :D

You could even use it safely with XP if you wanted.

Just make sure you have another drive attached for all your downloads and music making (You can designate an area that isn't covered by Shadow Defender on the main drive but idon't like to do that)

Thanks @Sylenth.Will.Fall that Shadow Defender sounds interesting. I'm sure it's better than MS's backup solutions. Sounds almost like using virtual machine OS which also has snapshots you can come back to. I have to check it out, out of sheer curiosity.

I have worked out a workaround for you..

    1) Unless you already have done so, enable MS updates

to do this (Start button bottom left) in the search box type Services.msc

    2) Scroll down to Background Intelligent Transfer Service (switch it to 'manual')

    3) Scroll down to Windows Update and choose (automatic) (also choose START now)

    Close this window

    4) Go here:- https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/search.aspx?q=kb4490628 and choose the One from bottom option to download (x86 version)

This file is the same update you tried to d/l only now you will do it manually with no chance of any screw-ups from 'Microsoft update'

Reboot the PC and that " soon you will lose protection" sign will be gone.

    5) Go back to services.msc. Disable both processes ( Background Intelligent Transfer Service & Windows Update)

Close that down and you should be good to go.

Please note- I have assumed you already have kb4474419 on your machine, but if not do the same for this but do it BEFORE the one above)

    https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/search.aspx?q=kb4474419"

Again it is the one from bottom option you want to download.
