    @feridan-

thanks for those links, it would suck finding the perfect sample from a movie only to have the copyright owners bitch once you get famous and everyone hears your song with the sample in it..

then you would either have to pay royalties or remove the sample from the song

so those movies are all safe to sample, good looking out!

    cheers!

this one's relevant to industrial music production, too

Just an excerpt, the whole presentation is here:

This is the Peter Neville video for 'Guns' he mentions. It repurposes vintage film material:

Guns - Very obsessive - Great

Exactly what you want to watch early morning.
I mean B&W grading included and the stock is great
The only complaint is the sensation of deja-vu a mid 90´s deja- vu, editing wise.

As far as industrial goes, it's kind of hard to surpass this:

Shuttle launch from the perspective of the boosters with sound:

Very rich : :grooves: explossive, randomly percussive, metallic, sustained, atmospheric, with detached dynamics(almost underwater)an avalanche of sonic events!

great pick issuing style from live action. Industrial!

I think I'll go in search for the serial number of these boosters, so we can at least name the artist performing.

This is by the artist Huygens Atmospheric Structure Instrument, from his 2005 performance on Titan, Saturn:

Do you collect serial numbers to trace artists performing?
    Who the editor? the broadcaster?
The history behind publishing events that eventually some ppl might appreciate and collect?
That brings back the B. Drummon point on mass recording and publishing, elevating things into a category.

Research, engineering is it a performance?
Art may mimic environment, not sure the other way around, or other intentionalities.
I mean, intentionality is part of the definition of art, even when it´s open to a degree of randomness.
This concrete genre where noise is an important ingredient, because its transgressive value, is still a genre because of the deep intention.

Or contrary should it be suggested that art,the category, it´s stablished by the mind filling any sensorial event-experience with convention and meaning?
So then, what a relief from the discipline, from the agreement, from the endless attempts at the model, pattern, prototype.
Let it for free or make it a business
The whole comment might sound as if taken from the toilet of nunnery if you like

In a more practical approach can I request Sonifications pls? :mates:

Do you mean the Shuttle? Yeah, I have to keep myself from watching it. Very Stanley Kubrick. In fact you can easily follow it with the gate sequence from 2001 (with Ligeti's Atmospheres). In terms of feel the two things work together really well.

I´m not exactly making industrial, but I spend a lot of time looking for strange sounds.
One of the most educational multitracks I ever found was from Massive Attack. They don´t have an aggressive sound but they use a lot of the filtering approachs listed here. Once I found an interview where they said that almost every track in an album was routed through cheap guitar pedals to get some separation, different colors and contrast in the mix.
Lots of the samples we find in libraries are just common drum machines or programed beats reamped with unusual gear, and it doesn´t have to be expensive or HQ-boutique to sound great.
Once I spend a entire night with a friend recording weird noises with a Nintendo DS, a few pedals and an almost broken shitty amp. It´s fun to try
Reamping field recordings and ambiences is nice too, you could find lots of overtones and inspiration there. You could get really original 'reefs' by chopping and slicing that noises or mapping them in a sampler to write more accurate stuff.

that sounds like a fun night man- its good you have a buddy to experiment with and have fun- making music for me is all about the thrill of making new sounds and arrangements never heard before...its addicting

i used to use my old sony minidisc recorder and a shitty radio shack mic to capture random sounds on the fly...you never know when inspiration might strike...good times

i think its great how many people kill themselves trying to get the cleanest sound possible for electronic music, while others do their best to mangle and distort the audio

    :)

Well.. yeah! It was really fun! I kinda miss those nights. I´m not too dedicated to my music lately... (nostalgic moment, whisper)
But yes, for me it´s better to try things in a DIY way.. you can always find great samples out there, but putting toghether some personal sound palettes is maybe a better way to create more consistent and unique art. I´ve heard tons of libraries, but in a collection with hundreds of kicks maybe I like just 5 of them, and I don´t like when things come highly processed, they never fit well. So, for fx, ambiences and noises I prefer to try to generate the 'thing'. It´s more educational and you can get more variations from the same source.

I like to re-amp a lot of synths (particularly synth basses) through extremely high-gain tube guitar preamps (peavey rockmaster--5150 precursor, rocktron voodoo valve witchdoctor). I sometimes use subtle tube saturation by running through the clean channel too.

Our sound (Dimension Flux) resembles nothing of what the original post punk era of industrial is (throbbing gristle, non, einstürzende neubauten etc) but our dance based sound is influenced by its distorted and cathartic nature. It grew into many forms in the 90s which I still hold dear and would like to explore eventually. This is an example of the dancier industrial crossover stuff i liked from the 90's scene.

Any questions on how we get our sound please ask

I love skinny puppy, Download, the Tear Garden and all of Cevin's related projects. A BIG part of my youth was spent listening to these guys. Finally saw Skinny Puppy live a couple of years ago… loved it!

Yeah d-flux, I have to agree with what SineWave said on one page or other in this thread and that was that he always liked the non-particularity of the genre. I'm a big fan of Dimension Flux's sound and other Electro-Industrial bands as well as post-punk stuff. If it's Industrial it's almost certain I will love it. Love 16Volt, Cevin's projects, Chemlab, Combichrist, Front 242, FLA (and all side projects from Noise Unit To ProTech), Haujobb, Icon Of Coil, Machines Of Loving Grace, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, Numb, Portion Control, Run Level Zero, Skinny Puppy, Spahn Ranch, The Tear Garden (cEvin + The guy from Legendary Pink Dots), Wumpscut...I could go on for days. :break:

I'm in the middle of the hassle of setting up my system after getting a new computer so once I get situated I will definitely ask you a few things. Thanks so much for the offer, it's truly amazing to be able to ask someone working in the genre that has produced tracks for Alfa Matrix of all labels. I think it would be infinitely useful if more artists would hang out on forums and interact with their fans and give them tips about their process. Perhaps that would bring the most underrated of genres more into the public eye as well as getting more people interested in producing it.

And yes I find it incredibly cool that we actually have Sven from Dimension Flux on our forums and baffled that I only found out about it 2 years later. The weird thing is that had it been someone else sitting in my place they likely wouldn't have known and that alternate reality is a terrible place I don't even want to think about for too long. :wow:
