I've always been fascinated with space in relation to sound design and, although I'm working in stereo, I find using ambisonic or binaural software like Sennheiser's AMBEO or Anaglyph add a level of depth and distance like no other. It's obviously missing the true 3D effect it's intended to create, but from a design perspective, makes for some interesting listening. I wonder what people's thoughts are on the topic and if anyone has used these methods in their own productions.

Do you mean ambisonics? ambisonics is a paradigm like surround or OBA & it can be rendered to speakers or headphones. Any 2D+ content rendered to HRTF for headphones can be called binaural, and you can take any kind of input, including ambisonics, surround or OBA, or stereo/mono.

Just like the other 20 listed here

    A bit finicky

I prefer to work with physical speakers, like 5.0 surround, or 15.1 surround

Junh1024 is an expert on this, it gets deep.

Personally I find a lot of the ambisonic plugins useless with how they warp and distort the sound. Phase is a huge issue and things generally start to sound tinny.

edit, I meant regarding stereo. Surround mixing is different.

I did mean ambisonics, my apologies. It's all still new territory for me.
Although i'm interested in the concept of 3D audio in performances, at the moment I just like the idea of using the tools for something they weren't fully designed for and seeing what comes out of it.
I appreciate that clarity can be lost in some cases, but clarity isn't always necessary for interesting sounds. At least not for me.
I'm finding them quite fun to use.

Usually people use multiple speakers with discrete input. There have been commercial performances, with 5.0 surround in the past, or with a custom layout. This is usually 2D. Because it's 2 axis: width & depth.

For academia, they love ambisonics with 8-30 speakers. 2D or 3D. 3d is 3 axis: width & depth & height.

I remember seeing something a while ago with Max Cooper performing on a sound stage that was 3D. It was a custom built job, but I can’t remember who did it.

Apart from the fact that the fourth dimension would be time. How difficult can it be to count to three?

It's like those 'rides' at amusement parks with wobbly chairs and a big cinema screen. Apparently spraying you with compressed air is considered 4D.
