Man i feel like crying. My internal drive just seems to have stopped working. 2015 mbp. I had a clone that i was able to boot up an external hd , but its a challenge using it. Everything takes so fucking long to load, and im not able to access finder or anything besides apps in the sidebar or launchpad. I have an external ssd thats smaller but was wondering if i cloned the things that would perform better on a ssd, If my time using this set up would be easier on me. I dont even know if CCC will open up. Any time i try to access anything associated with my intenal drive i get the beach ball and everything freezes up

What are the best, inexpensive replacements that i could get for my MBP?

@CharlieCrizzle Wait, what? You had an internal SSD, from Apple, and it died within 5 years?

 

No suggestions on hardware as I've seen many compatible models work as long as they are formatted correctly and have no idea about speed the end user ultimately got as I just formatted and installed the hardware.

Not sure how comfortable you are doing this but:

• unscrew the backplate
• disconnect the battery connector from the logic board
• unscrew and remove the drive
• use compressed air at the connection (might as well get the fans and logic board too)
• reconnect the drive and reassemble
• SMC and NVRAM reset then boot

I can't tell you how many hardware problems I've resolved on Apple devices just but disconnecting and then reseating the component.
If the issue persists, it is an indication of either a failing component/connecting cable or worse, a failing logic board.

Hold 'T' at boot to go enter Target Disk Mode and connect to another mac with thunderbolt, ethernet or firewire cable or if you have another machine or a drive reader you can connect the drive to and you can boot into recovery, you can try running Disk Repair.

I don't do sarcasm in these situations. I am a Mac person too and I am appalled by this.
But it is more likely to be something like logic board as u said. An SSD shouldn't display problems as per op's.

It's just occured to me that I would normally be appalled if an SSD supplied by Apple were to die within 5 years, but this is also the sort of time required to potentially go beyond write usage...if the op wasn't just using it as an OS drive!
i.e. Lots of writes happening to it!
That's the max amount of time the manufacturers offer for warranty etc, due to people doing lots of writes.

External drives as scratch-disc for recording to.
External drives for Kontakt libraries etc.
Happy OS drive and computer, happy daw.
At least 10, preferably 20% free disc space.
OS needs space sometimes to make calculations.
It's like more elbow room for it it work in.

Do you mean that: SSDs used as OS driver do NOT have lots of writes happening to them?

Those 2 seem at opposite ends of write-use spectrum.
Recording scratch-disk = constant rewriting
Kontakt libraries (most libraries) very few writes- almost exclusively for access.
Not sure what you mean.. (?)

No. I mean you shouldn't write to OS drive with a daw! Especially if SSD. This comes from wisdom from way back, when only HDD existed.

Of course! That's why you use a HDD as a scratch disc.

Seems like 2015 models all have a proprietary connector, so you will need an adapter if you want to use non-Apple branded SSD.

 

OK that clears it all up. I was only confused because you did not state the types along with their uses.

 

I fried one a few years back on a 2015 MBP Retina by leaving it in the trunk of the car at the Dulles airport long term parking to bake in the sun for a week. By the time looked for it and realized where it was, it was too late to do anything about it. I got one from from Amazon from a brand called OWC, didn't need an adapter or anything else. Just open, clean, disconnect, connect new drive and reinstall OS.

The most painful part of the experience was when I cross threaded a screw while putting everything back together and now it doesn't sit flush with the bottom of the laptop anymore.

I think I found it by just looking "2015 Mac Book Pro SSD." It's been over two years and no issues to report or complain about.

If it was your system SSD than put it to another working computer and run Testdisk.
Google it how to use it.

In my case: I got a very old laptop with a faulty drive in it at boot up windows was trying to fix it it lasted about 4 hours because of bad sectors/maybe other damages.
After my Windows 10 started I was able to fix the shitty HDD which is 500 GB I was able to recover about 420 GB the rest of the drive is unfixable but I can still use "the recovered healthy part".

Ok so i took the internal ssd out and put it back on. I could of sworn i had some compressed air around but couldnt find it . (Should i hit it with air and try again?). Before i had taken it out, my load bar would get to the end and stop. After i re attached it the bar wouldnt even load all the way....'
However, after i took it back off again, i am able to search for and access everything in finder etc, which when i tried with the ssd attached led to spinning beach balls and whole system freezes. So that is a good thing... Im gonna try cloning the clone onto an external ssd hoping that my load times will be more manageable . it sucks but at least i am able to access things on the drives now. Would this be an indicator that it is indeed something with the ssd and not the motherboard? Or could it still be one of the connector cables fried?!?!? Is the next step just taking it to an expert who can diagnose what is wrong? It would be just my luck to buy a new ssd and have it be something else. Thanks for all the help btw guys. This place is worth all the shenanigans

 

Well, you could use some software to check the drive. Also, try looking up console logs and/or booting in verbose mode.

 

To be honest. I didn't read all of the posts in this thread but I can recommend Samsung SSD's.
Running my OS on an 850 EVO now since about 5 years and a friend has a used 840 EVO from me with 120GB in use since end of 2013.
Both drives are in almost perfect contition (my 850 EVO has a health at about 98%, the 840 EVO is still at 100%).

Currently I have 6 Samsung SSD drives from 850 EVO to 970 Pro (m.2) and I never had any issue.
Even my Download SSD (860 EVO with 2TB) and my 850 PRO (music production) where the data usage is very high
are in perfect contitions.

So I definitely suggest you to buy one of them as your future SSD. I know, the prices are a bit higher
but you know what? You also getting a few more years of lifetime for that and if you think about it,
nothing is worse than losing data and in case of creativity and music production, no money is worth the loss,
especially when it's just a couple of dollars or euros you saved on the cheaper SSD.

 

Another factor for SSD lifetime is using Spotlight. Everyone I know who had their factory MBP SSD fail before mine, although I was the only one running my machine 24/7, had Spotlight enabled.
Lots of additional writes to update the file index database.

Spotlight can be disabled permanently:
sudo mdutil -a -i off

Now it's up to you if you want to give up some SSD lifetime for the comfort of using Spotlight.

I have a bit off topic question, do you trust Samsung Magician to update their SSD firmware?
I have a QVO 1 TB and I always fear this kind of operation.
Is it really necessary?
I cant't find any changelog about it.

 

If you can tell us how much free space you had on the drive, I might be able to answer that.

I get confused that they don't print smiley faces on sheet music for my favourite keys, but this is my problem and I can't blame them for not adhering to my random wants.

 

i had 779gigs used when i made the backup. It might have gotten a few gigs over 800 at most at the time of "failure"
