I've never seen this one before from Windowsdefender

file in question is the trusted "hosts" file where WE block all sorts of IP adresses and unwatned adds on skype etc.

Now it wont let me change the file at all. It keeps deleting it, no matter how many times i tell it to "allow" it.

any windows guru who knows a few tricks to get around this BS ??

Apple put their operating system on top of a Linux kernel, one day Micrsoft will realize that is actually a good idea. Then us Windows users can have more control over what the OS can do with our files

Mac/Linux users could simply run: chattr +i /etc/hosts to stop the OS touching the damn file

Linux for sure, but I doubt Mac or Android have much more freedom to operate.

There are two categories of people, one who works on computer, and one who updates their systems.

When you call Windows defender malware, you are right :like:

First things I do after installing the OS is removing all the "automatics" like defender. It's always the same: These "helpers" and "defenders" are taking over the control of your system and renders it unusable for any seriuos use, like DAW.

Wrong, macOS uses the "xnu" kernel, which is a BSD derivative.

And on Linux (assuming GNU userland) you'd use "xattr" to change extended attributes. And theoretically any process running with root privileges could reverse this, however, pretty much nothing non-interactive do this and they assume standard POSIX file semantics.

I could go on about SELinux and Apparmor, but I think this is enough :)

Or go fully WORM but that's overkill for this scenario

Mounting a FS as read-only and disabling remount is a pretty solid way, but somewhat cumbersome, or just go ahead and suffocate yourself with etcd or something.

*edit:* Yeah, this is massively OT so I'll bow out here, sorry.

    have you tried this?

    1. Open Windows Security.
    2. Select Virus & threat protection and then click Protection history.
    3. In the list of all recent items, filter on Quarantined Items.
    4. Select an item you want to keep, and take an action, such as restore.

The best cure for Microshit problems is to install W10 v1909 or 2009 LTSC, and then spend whole afternoon turning off everything you can or cannot find [simply by stumbling on it], then install the software you use...

    and then make music!

Do you know how many shitz Microsoft gives about content makers using their systems?

That is really so weird. I always write-protect my hosts file, but that prolly wouldn't do much against viral attack. I did backup everything and panic, tho. Bad enough we're all at the mercy of viruses already. Covid-me-don't =(
