    Hello!
I'm quite new to producing and i'm interested in getting a synthesizer so that i can edit the sounds by hand and not by mouse in a plugin.
    So my question is:
1 How do i get it to work with ableton, do i just need a midi soundcard and plug it in there and i'm done?
    2. Will the sound from the synthesizer be transfered to ableton or just midi signals (like from a usb midi keyboard?)

Basically if i were to get a Waldorf blofeld keyboard, do i just plug it in a midi soundcard and the sound will be sent to ableton or will just midi signals be sent?

Sorry if this is confusing, im from sweden so my english is not the best.
    Thanks,
    Luknux

Short answer, MIDI only. However you can send program changes and system exclusive messages to make sure your synth is playing the correct sounds that you programmed for your song. If you want external synth sounds in your projects, and you do not have a hardware audio mixer, you should record them as an audio track. Also, record the MIDI and you can choose other sounds later (from your synth) or route them to a plug in.

Hope this helps you out, good luck,

Forgot to tell you that, You will need a MIDI interface of some type. There are many options, some on sound cards or audio interfaces. They also make stand alone MIDI interfaces for less cost.

    @One Reason:
    Have an iPad?
If so, try TouchOSC+LiveControl or LiveRemote :)
Better than nothing, and at least LiveRemote almost looks like da real thang.
You won't feel the real knobs and faders, but it's so much more portable and flexible...

@luknux.You should get a card (audio and MIDI interface ) with USB or Firewire connection if your PC has such connection.
Now "1. How do i get it to work with ableton, do i just need a midi soundcard and plug it in there and i'm done?"
    the answer is yes.
"2. Will the sound from the synthesizer be transfered to ableton or just midi signals (like from a usb midi keyboard?)"
the answer is:the sound from the synthesizer will be transfered to ableton if you connect your keyboard's audio output to your soundcard's audio input(with an audio cable).
But if you connect your keyboard's MIDI output (with a MIDI cable) to your soundcard's MIDI input then playing your keyboard, you will record MIDI signals to Ableton. In Ableton you should have selected a plug-in synthesizer so you can hear its sound, since MIDI signals is only data and not sound.
Finally, you edit your plugin synth's sounds with your mouse and with keyboard shortcuts.Download and learn fron tutorials for your Ableton.Have a nice trip in music world.
