I Think that someone could take the ARM version of reaper and recompile it for Linux but it would only be 32bit.

actually whole Apple is going ARM, as seen with iPhones, iPads and soon upcoming MacBooks and other Macs, Apple is leaving Intel for ARM

VST3 is cross platform and it should be because its just code, no libraries or drivers. Same with VST2. The difficult part is porting low level OS specific DSP code which interacts directly with native audio interfaces. Windows is the best in terms of its audio interfaces since Vista, hence a lot of hosts with Windows support. The VSTGUI (which, I think Serum uses) is also cross platform.

As was stated previously (in jest with the RickRoll), Reaper has been on Linux for years, though not officially supported. One of the podcasts I listen to (Linux Unplugged) does all of their production on Reaper running on Linux. That group has been podcasting for about 15 years or more, and Reaper on Linux helped get them onto all Linux production tools (including video) with its multitrack recording and VSTs. They had tried other DAWs, but Reaper was best.

I've played with it on Linux, but the lack of Kontakt is a show stopper for me. You can run some Windows plugins on it, but between getting them working and the somewhat complicated Pulse Audio system setup, I have never dug into trying it (I'd rather spend the time making music). Reaper can run VSTs using it's own GUI with just the sliders and switches showing (no fancy graphics from the plugins), so maybe that would work for many of the Windows VSTs (just a guess). So for now it's Windows for music, Linux for most everything else.

Yeah, that's the hard part. So basically Linux needs more DAW support than VST. The upcoming Juce 6 that can be already tested in beta (thanks @demberto for the tip, I didn't notice ;) ) has full VST3 Linux support.
As for Reaper, it uses a thin Mac OS->Win32 wrapper and it doesn't depend on any native library, so it should compile rather easily in Linux with a few tweaks.
As has been said earlier in this thread several people have made it.

I love Linux but I do not see this happening. Audio in Linux is beyond a nightmare. Pulse Audio still suffers from extreme latency and JACK suffers from lack of integration, support, and interfaces. Even if Reaper makes a Linux version I do not see them supporting it for very long when they realize how much more work they have to do for a much much smaller user base.

Reaper for Linux has already been around for many years, so I think they know all about the user base. So does U-he, who has had Linux versions of most of their synths (now including Zebra2, Diva, Repro...) available since 2014.

But the future of Linux audio looks like it will be PipeWire:
"It provides a low-latency, graph based processing engine on top of audio and video devices that can be used to support the use cases currently handled by both pulseaudio and JACK. PipeWire was designed with a powerful security model that makes interacting with audio and video devices from containerized applications easy, with supporting Flatpak applications being the primary goal. Alongside Wayland and Flatpak we expect PipeWire to provide a core building block for the future of Linux application development."

    Features include:
    • Capture and playback of audio and video with minimal latency.
    • Real-time Multimedia processing on audio and video.
    • Multiprocess architecture to let applications share multimedia content.
    • Seamless support for PulseAudio, JACK, ALSA and GStreamer applications.
    • Sandboxed applications support. See Flatpak for more info.

I did not know about PipeWire; thanks for the info it's been a several years since I was submersed in Linux on a daily basis. The "seamless" support for ALSA and GStreamer is a big big bonus too if it works properly. Surprised I had not already seen this.
