My Bass Synths are not analog enough...my fault?

  1. A basic Voyager is around $5,000 AUD. My touring setup is pretty basic. Kurzweil, Hammond XK-3 and JP-8000. My studio doe not need more hardware.
     
  2. If you are making music, the Minimoog will give you instant gratification. Its so inspiring. The Sub is totally another species. I thought Id quickly grow to love it. But I haven't. It's a complex beast to take. The Mini is cozy and friendly.

    Thank you for your answers mate:bow:.Yes I do make music.In France the Voyager is way less expensive,around US$ 2200 ,the RME around 1400.OMG...The Minimoog is pricey,the reissue is around US$ 3800 to 5000.It's too much for me at this time unfortunately.
    The Subsequent 37 is my first Moog.And honestly I was expecting something better sounding that that.Do you have any experience with the Little Phatty,Subphatty too?From Youtube the Little Phatty sounds nice to my ears,I like the overdrive.And I like aggressive sounds more generally.

    warmth, dirt, grit, compression, noise, roughness, errors....you could add all of these characteristics to any source sound with a simple chain of ableton stock fx...saturator will do much of this...use analog setting with a bit of drive and wet/dry on every channel if necessary to bring out the harmonics, this will gently compress and warm the sound...at the other extreme the waveshaper setting can mangle the sound completely but can also completely enhance or alter characteristics in a pleasant way.. the overdrive [with filter] can be used for adding harmonic content with a filter: all overdrive types will compress the audio and make it louder so remember to drop your volume a lot, esp if you are driving over 7db or so in saturator, use a limiter temporarily to not destroy your speakers...remember wet/dry is your friend to blend harmonics in....erosion,grain delay or frequency shifter can add many kinds of noise or error with some random automation. This way you can make a sound with more harmonic content so when you put it through a chorus/flange/phase/reverb etc it will sound richer than an untreated or even nicely eqd and compressed sound. The types of chains i make for this kind of processing will also have eq, sidechain, compression in multiples per channel. just to pin down specific content for sound design..its really quick and easy to do and can make any vst or sample sound fucking massive. I also do most of my transient shaping using vst enelopes... as an ex hardware junkie I can see the merits but i prefer the immediacy [and better midi implementation] of a cheap laptop with NO peripherals at all as my keyboard playing was never up to much and i got sick of usb devices failing....so all mouse clicks and no audio interface is bliss for me and I dont miss the expensive baggage i used to drag round...music toys are nice and I've had loads but nowadays my writing and mixdown sessions are combined and it's so quick to write a tune because I know ableton and a few vsts inside out [for my purposes, anyway..i could still spend a lifetime learning more about ableton and I've used it for 12 years]

    Seems like from this video the secret to achieving the analog sound is Youtube compression. /s Diva vs. Moog Mother32. There's a few more Diva vs. hardware videos besides this. With a bass boost (some square waveshaping or analog saturation emu, etc), osc drift, maybe some sort of crosstalk or noise, you could get a convincing analog sound for most situations. If you're that obsessed you could run everything through an outboard device. I've heard people use old, cheap portable analog mixers for this or the amp circuit from old compressors rather than buy modern massively overpriced summing amps or interfaces. You might even get good results from some cheap guitar pedals, not using distortion but just the inherent noise and compression in the signal path itself.     B4 you give up, make sure you book a redeye flight and pay the extra few bucks and request seat 5B because you can stow the B3 in seat 5A as it is usually free on those flights.

    I knew a guy who figured out a way to fold his Roland Jupiter 8 in such a way that it fit comfortably into his backpack and so able to board with it as carry on.
