Most households in the UK will have pornography blocked by their internet provider unless they choose to receive it, David Cameron has announced.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-23401076

In addition, the prime minister said possessing online pornography depicting rape would become illegal in England and Wales - in line with Scotland.

Mr Cameron warned in a speech that access to online pornography was "corroding childhood".

The new measures will apply to both existing and new customers.

    ....

Mr Cameron also called for some "horrific" internet search terms to be "blacklisted", meaning they would automatically bring up no results on websites such as Google or Bing.

He told the BBC he expected a "row" with service providers who, he said in his speech, were "not doing enough to take responsibility" despite having a "moral duty" to do so.

He also warned he could have to "force action" by changing the law and that, if there were "technical obstacles", firms should use their "greatest brains" to overcome them.

In his speech, Mr Cameron said family-friendly filters would be automatically selected for all new customers by the end of the year - although they could choose to switch them off.

And millions of existing computer users would be contacted by their internet providers and told they must decide whether to use or not use "family-friendly filters" to restrict adult material.

The filters would apply to all devices linked to the affected home Wi-Fi network and across the public Wi-Fi network "wherever children are likely to be present".

Customers who do not click on either option - accepting or declining - will have filters activated by default, Tory MP Claire Perry, Mr Cameron's adviser on the sexualisation and commercialisation of childhood, told the BBC.

The UK's biggest internet service providers have agreed to the filters scheme meaning it should cover 95% of homes.

Other measures announced by the prime minister included:

New laws so videos streamed online in the UK will be subject to the same restrictions as those sold in shops
Search engines having until October to introduce further measures to block illegal content
Experts from the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre being given more powers to examine secretive file-sharing networks
A secure database of banned child pornography images gathered by police across the country will be used to trace illegal content and the paedophiles viewing it

Mr Cameron also called for warning pages to pop up with helpline numbers when people try to search for illegal content.

He said: "I want to talk about the internet, the impact it is having on the innocence of our children, how online pornography is corroding childhood.

"And how, in the darkest corners of the internet, there are things going on that are a direct danger to our children, and that must be stamped out.
    Claire Perry MP

I also don't like all that pornography stuff on the Internet. But i wouldn't prohibit it only because i don't like it.
Always the same, they just make decisions over you.
I think Humans and especially parents need to handle this, and not some control freaks.

I would be delighted to see some example of how pornography or any other material related to sexuality can corrupt and corrode childhood.

    it's called 4chan..

i enjoy some good ol' wholesome fornication as much as anyone, but i have to agree [hardcore porn+kids=horrible consequences for humanity]

kids are innocent! they should be sheltered as much as possible for as long as possible, because the world is a fucked up place anymore. but as hard as you try to shelter them, as soon as they go over to a friends house with the internet, it's all for not.

I agree with Lisapower that good parenting is better than control freaks dictating how we should raise our kids... but this is a tough one..

what Lord Gaga said is also true!!!!!! but

hardcore porn for money is much much different than the wonderful act of human love, which is needed for procreation, which is needed to continue our species...so many people nowadays are scared of sex in general, they are ok with kids playing violent video games, and watching realistic torture horror movies,a nd crime dramas with human cadaver dissections in graphic detail on prime time tv, but they are scared of showing a nipple!!!

society has become much more prudish in the last few hundred years, all throughout human history for example, with lifepans much shorted than they are now, girls as soon as they could menstruate they were considered ready for childbirth, and 18 years of age was almost too old to consider trying to marry off..

its a debate which i can see both sides of the argument as valid, in their own ways

then again, if you try taking away MY sexy sorority co-eds i'll punch you right in the face.

Then ban 4chan but don't create filters that will reveal more precise informations about who is consuming porn and when.

I don't believe in "sheltering" kids by depicting them the fairies' world, I believe instead in child education (offering them a true perspective and reason why they should avoid something clearing out all the risks). That's the best "control" (I hate the word) you can have without actually harming them.

"porn+kids=horrible consequences for humanity" is as meaningless as it gets. Children are going to discover themselves sexually anyways and this has nothing to do with porn, it's called growing up (somebody should inform the almighty PM) and you can't stop it by filtering some websistes. Also, how copulating can be bad for humanity since it secures a future for it?

Porn? To each his, or her, own. but abusing kids?! Get outta here.

I have no problem with an ex-Eton boy creating a few soundbites, a bit like his "Big society" bollocks. In fact, I have no problem with blocking porn, except that it will prove to be impossible to achieve.

The UK is a police state, the MOST monitored place in the world...in fact, there is an American secret operative somewhere right now, reading this. (You have a boring job, Mr Snoop).

The problem is, when Mr Cameron, an ex-public schoolboy, an over-privileged poncy tosser, who has no idea of how normal people,(= working class potless scum like me), live, gets on his soap box and starts telling us what we can and can't do.

To get to the point, and what is relevant to this Forum, block kiddie porn, sexual abuse images, etc, fine....but, once the Government start down that road, our musical shared interests will flag up, a bit like if I include "HOW TO BUILD A BOMB" in a message.

So now a covert intelligence operative has flagged this message. Mr Snoop, all we do here is make music, share ideas, and err, allow people to try software before buying it.

I suspect that the porn "thing" is the start of the Nanny State openly breaking Privacy Laws to subvert the population.

WOW! Did I really spend 10m writing this? The truth is, I feel very passionate about this. Best get back to writing music, which is what most people here are interested in:)

Pron will still be available. Same as many corner shops that still sell "dirty mags".
Just the weird and down right sick crap will be filtered out. How is this a bad thing?

People have to overreact to anything these days.

Of course they can't stop pornography on the web. I mean, sex sells, The Government wouldn't like to loose this money making machinery. What David Cameron wan't gives them more power to control much more then they already do.
Don't let fool you, This is a good example. how they control the people etc.. The people will not accept what David Cameron wan't they will demand it. People will demand it simple because they kidding you all.

And sex-ed is crucial to development.

To me, the more you shelter kids and keep things from them, the more they are going to want to try it.

I believe in teaching your kids everything. They should know what dirty girls are and do. And hence learn what they are like and be taught to stay away from them.

If they never knew what a dirty girl looked or acted like then they would be curious to try one out when they got older.

I'm not saying to watch porn with your kids, but at least talk about it so when they do see it they aren't as interested.

    Don't take away dem boobies!!!

Mr Cameron wants to address the social issues to why people are looking for child pornography in the first place,
because blocking sites and taking down pics will not fix this issue, it will just push it more underground.

Of course blame the pronos. Sure, it's not good for children, but it's not the problem. It's the consequence of how we let younger generations see the world.

Kids have access to those kind of stuff pretty early nowdays. When I was a kid 10-15 years ago, already some of my friends used the computer, but they got only a few "computer hours" a week, and were only able to play some harmless games. Parents controlled the computer access of their child. As a kid I personally dont even thought of wasting my time on a boring computer, and when my father explained me what the internet is I just thought that its pretty lame.

But these days I see very young kids, walking down the street, nearly running into me because instead of looking where the hell they're going they just stare at a smartphone and play some stupid game or send textmessages! Thats not normal... :excl:

And of course, we let kids use every possibility of modern technoligy, without even thinking what consequences that could have. The internet isnt a place for kids at all! All the stuff you can discover there... God I wish I wouldnt know some things, and Im pretty sure everybody saw some stuff they didnt want to see. And that isnt only pronography.

Just blaming the pronography is cheap, and easy. But its more behind that. We should inform parents about these consequences, so that they can consider these facts at education. And we should begin early with educating the kids about that stuff, in the first classes of school. Of course that would mean get all these stupid and old teachers to learn this stuff as well, but its important.

If this had been the case, then there wouldn't be a single reason for a reply. The problem is the much wider perspective of the filter they're proposing and also the procedures to use/avoid it which will reveal to somebody stricty personal information. Why my ISP should know that I want to watch porn of any kind if I don't agree to the filter system? There are much better way to track down child pornography and all the illegal stuff on the web but they require money and time. Guess why the PM doesn't do it?

I agree the best solution is educating first parents and then their children. It all depends on how we make children use the internet. Establishing some fair rules in advance can prevent a lot of future issues.

So this is the start, the filter will be warez sites next or anything that does not conform what governments want to see.

how would you feel if they put a filter on your front door and said you can only go out two days a week you would be pretty

Sorry, but I had to register just to tell you how utterly wrong you are! Morals are certainly not going downhill, it's a common myth.

This is a verse from Plato, 4000 BC:

"What is happening to our young people? They disrespect their elders, they disobey their parents. They ignore the law. They riot in the streets inflamed with wild notions. Their morals are decaying. What is to become of them?"

And this from Hesiod, 8000 BC:

"When I was young, we were taught to be discreet and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly disrespectful and impatient of restraint".

As you can see, the older generation has worried about the decaying morals of the younger generation since time immemorial. There is no great problem with the young generation of today.

As for the government censoring the internet, I am 100% against it. It should be the parents duty to watch their kids on the internet, not the governments. What next - should they ban bleach, as it could kill kids? Or perhaps ban cars, as kids can get run over? Why not give away all of our freedoms?

Another famous saying, this time from Benjamin Franklin:

"Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both."
