If your goal is to make your song as loud as possible while still sounding OK then yes use compression and a touch of limiting on all the tracks. If that's not your goal, then just some light compression on each individual track just to control crazy peaks is fine and then some light mastering compression and limiting will get it done.

After years i find i can mixing as a nomad ... but with no dedicated and prepared room honestly it's hard to mastering... for sure you can maximise a bit to play on a big soundsystem. I observe than people react just fine to a raw material ... So in all stage, mixing to mastering it's really easy to overdoo, squash etc... so maybe you save time to spend some 50euro by track for a professional mastering (i think that's not so expensive... also that part is spent by label records when you sign you don't even spent that.... but as they are so many people to want to.... musician will finally spent all by themself to existing... i'm a label manager also and i don't think it will be working because financial is only a small part of the job.)

Also, and if you can... simply ban your headphone as much as you can do. I know as a nomad it's hard... but, i think there's an addiction, and this addiction in loudness, frequency, volume will automaticaly drive you in the wrong direction, appreciation... Prefer a small monitors set. OR, made your mixing stage the morning only 1hour and separate your mixing in a few days.... Don't mix an entire day.... and always on lower, medium volume !!!! for bass, infra a subbass monitor should help, cutoff when you've done the lower spectrum adjustment. Big Advise : always start with a good amount of headroom, build a starter balance and then when eq and compression always keep your balance value in Hz... i explain if your kick is at -6dB value in your reference starter balance and then you compress it your level still be the same -6dB.... if it -4dB you will think your compression in fat but in fact you fake an extra gain only ;) pay attention to that and keep the value of your balance !!!!

In my experience that's my advises...

NB: don't forget small amount of some and different and great choosen reverb on a lot or tracks in your song ;)
the key is an addition of great and subtle adjustment ;) when you find an eq or reverb is nice always keep it and lower a bit and go to another track...

for the dynamic (and really trust me don't put too much compression !!!) aply some transcient compression, set a good and small amount of sidechain + Eqing on a lot of parts (plus: this can add an extragroove in your rhythm section...) and then go to NEWYORK Compression (Parralel or %dry/wet on a dedicated bus or clone like a Reason 7)

ALSO : if i give him some wrong advises TELL ME so i can correct myself my post is also open to learn and correct ;) learning curve is is a matter of life :)

And to reply to that question : i say no why clipping :) if you clip you have problem in your home studio configuration it's because you can't keep your headroom and haven't the possiblity to boost your output gain on your soundcard or amp monitors. I recomend to have a great soundcard to have extra gain as the same time and have the possibility to keep your headroom alive ! the only things you can do is to add a master chain to start your mixing stage (EQ + COMP + Limiter) and add some subtle amount of threshold with a soft compressor configuration.

That's how i start, i prefer to have -12 / -6 dB of Headroom and boost my hardware config (soundcard + Monitors/or headphones)
This method can really save the time of mastering ingeneer ;) because when you swith off your master chain fx, bounce your track to send, youre track will be clean and have some extra dB to mastering nicely ;)
