Maybe this is a feature in the paid version but has SPAN also an option that gives automatically the result of the highest peak? So without pointing your cursor at it, a bit like Pro-Q3 does.

I use SPAN for this but I agree that it sometimes - even in High Res - is a bit difficult to detect the exact key if there's no highest peak in the low-end area (or the 'peak' has more keys covered at once). Melodyne would be an alternative but even that one won't always give the right result. Tuners are way to sloppy to my opinion. So another way could be to add a Test Oscillator Sine Wave and use ears for matching. Or a filtered bassline perhaps with a decent tone.

yea sometimes, with some kicks, this is necessary. sometimes there is just too much movement in the frequencies so you just have to get somewhere that just works well enough.

There is an option for Hi-Res window although it seems to give a more simplified result over Hann & Blackman.

ah okay. the window will change the accuracy, but there are pros and cons to each window. personally i dont even bother changing it, i find it is useful enough in the default window (whatever that is).
basically the window changes how much of the signal is read and the curve each side, in order to estimate the result. more time means more accuracy, but you need to spend that time reading the signal.
i explained that really badly, but there is a lot of good information online about FFT and windows. check duckduckgo, you will find great info straight away.
