I have been away for a while and would like to get up to speed with what quality plugins there are available to peons such as myself. I have grabbed a few recently to update and so happy to find a lot are now x64 (was running 32 in reaper bridge previously)

Here are some that I think are of a good quality (correct me if i am wrong) and I would like some suggestions from people more qualified to let me know what are good character/adds sparkle/glow plugins.

I am all about adding that subtle silk to a good signal, and my recent find of the Arousor did get me just that.

Softube Bundle (Fet / Tube-Tech)
Softube Drawmer 1973 (nearly purchased one a few years back)
UBK1 Kush
Empirical labs Arousor (I think this is sooo good)
Sountoys & Waves bundle (I have these as a standard, I really like the Aphex Aurial Exciter)
D16 Decimort bit crusher & MOLOT Compressor.

I welcome your additions of well modeled/programmed and great sounding plugins. I know it does not have to be modeled on existing gear and could be innovative like soothe etc.

 

In your title, you mean "Teach me", instead of "learn me".?

 

Since you like "the silk" have a look at the lineup of EQs and more specialized dynamic effects by Tokyo Dawn Labs (TDR).
The Slick EQ (the non-mastering one) in particular, extremely flexible, sweet modern ui and going to be right up your alley sound wise. You can get a ton of different sounding EQ just out of that one magic TDR box, which means you get to seamlessly try them all out while you mix without having to fiddle with a million plugs.

ah yes i read again and i see you are looking for plugin suggestions sorry.

i like izotope neutron as a channel strip for this kind of work. but i dont really work with VA much so that is usually enough for me. if i need more than that i will either combine saturators with other tools like compressors or EQs or i will default to melda stuff.
melda have an extremely flexible plugin for almost every need you can think of.

 

DMG Audio, Fuse Audio Labs, Black Rooster Audio, Softube, Brainworx...ah...so many!

 

Fabfilter, Sonnox, Eventide and a few Waves........ just a few of my favorites.

 

Besides Tokyo Dawn Labs I would suggest checking Toneboosters because their new vsts now have a more decent GUI and the usual top notch sound processing. There have also been quite a few new reverbs in recent years so you might want to check them out. Last but not least IK Multimedia T-Racks has stepped up considerably quality wise in the jump to version 5. Even if all the bundle is unnecessary there are some good emulation of old hardware (dynaMU and other stuff) that I think deserve attention in a mixing context.

 

basically, there are many great tuttorials on the internet for your DAW's native plugs - you can improve your skills of using these by a 1000% and even learn new stuff - basically I think that some native plugins can do as good as some others (depends which plugs) but still - there are some great plugs out there.
I love FerricTDS (free one!) and using it for over 10 years now...try also LVC meter, TAL Reverb 2, and Camel Crusher
