Our ears have evolved over thousands of years to "tune in" on these frequencies, so the "self resonance" of the ear is around 2-4kHz. We needed to hear our babies and our tribesmen/women talking or whispering.
There's a reason why (in modern society) alarms, sirens, phone signals, cash registers, notification sounds, etc are in this area (as well as to save battery in relationship to loudness).
This can also be applied to mixing and sound design, etc.

No, no, the curve proves quite the opposite. Since these sounds mainly occur around 4kHz, men developed hyposensitivity there.

 

Do you mean that we couldn't even hear frequencies like this in the past?

 

I actually keep a pair of 3M construction graded hearing protection beside the dipertable when my toddlers disagree on things...those screams are piercing!

 

Yep, back then we (men) couldn't even hear women and crying babies. Ah, good old times.

I have a Cry Baby. I know how piercing that can be.

 

There's no fucking way a crying baby is louder than an helicopter.

About science, yes crying babies are the same concept as sirens, and alarm clocks. Its supposed to be loud and annoying, and grab our attention.

 

I always ask myself why people have children and still haven't found an answer to it.
