    any suggestions?
ideally free or otherwise available to poor bastards.

i have a couple of hundred files i want to convert. some WAV and some FLAC that i need to make into MP3 (320/44.1 min.). it would also probably be useful down the line if i could convert FLAC to WAV, but thats not necessary at the moment so happy if it cant do that.
i obviously just want to do them all in two processes if possible, rather than each one individually.

thanks folks! i dont know how i ever found anything before without your help :) this isolation has made me lazy

forgot to mention, i am on windows

foobar works well for batch converting, stick all the files you want into a playlist, ctrl-A then right click and 'convert...', install the windows flac tools first and it'll offer that too

    He's talking about Batch conversion.
So when the batch is finished the computer can shut down.
I don't want my computer online when the batch is finished do you? :)
Just kidding, can also be done offline.

There's XLD that plays FLAC and converts them to .wav or whatever.

on Windows, FormatFactory is a beast,
for more sophisticated stuff, you can use Reaper which features a batch converter

    People even suggest DAWs, omg.

Of course, use a decent gui for the conversion job (i.e. e.g., fb2k has some focus on conversion, naming and tags) and state of the art encoder executables (which you find on rarewares.org). Configure once, boom, done.

I'm using EZ CD Audio Converter, not free but you can find it on sister site. I use to use its older version (ez-cd-da extractor I think). It can convert from any format you need, from one way to another, you can of course choose the bitrate and the codec, it can even use the id3 to rename the file. Also it can go search for information on discog, amazon, etc.. for id3 information.
I use it for file conversion and for id3 edit (you can edit all file at once if you want) and great also to rename and have all your collection look clean with proper id3

Do you guys know if FormatFactory, Foobar2000 plus encoders are multicore when converting?

Reaper batch converter is extremely fast and versatile.

Dunno which platform you're on, but I use Bigasoft Audio Converter for the Mac (it's also available for Windoze, which is what I linked you to) when I need to batch-convert a bunch of .flac files. It's technically not free, but the serials are very easy to find.
