I've recently given Studio One a spin when Cubase 5 was having problems with freezing tracks (WTF?). Though I was overall impressed with the DAW I started noticing that CPU usage was way higher than any other platform I have used in the past. I would create a few instrument tracks with the most rudimentary of effects and it wasn't long before the CPU meter would go through the roof and I began experiencing pops. When Diva was in the project this was happening even when I wasn't playing back but with patches I know wouldn't cause this kind of reaction. My system is an older dual core but I seemed to have no problem running the same configuration on Cubase with way more effects and tracks before. Even FL Studio could handle the workload so I don't really understand what is happening here. It's certainly not the buffer because that is ridiculously large so what the hell is it? As the title suggests I am running the latest release. Thanks in advance for any help.

Yeah man I don't get what is going on and it must be a bug that they're aware of for some time because I saw some threads on the internet dating back 2 years where people were complaining of the exact same issue. It's not an issue with it being cracked since legitimate users have expressed the same frustrations. Honestly, I don't understand what the problem is with these developers. Every single DAW has been a total fucking nightmare for me to work with and it's not user error when you can't do basic functions like freezing a track or adding an instrument. I really liked that Studio One besides being intuitive has somehow managed to beat practically every other DAW in how fast it opens up a plug-in window when you click on it. I was really hoping that this could finally be a program that would actually allow me to work, imagine that. Absolutely ridiculous that almost 30 or so years later we still can't make a decent DAW. *no*

I don't know, I'm running out of DAWs here. :snuffy:

    Cubase
Problem freezing tracks and other annoyances that are showstoppers when working on an older rig. Annoying window handling and it's also showing it's age since there are no contemporary cracked versions.

    FL Studio
You call that a mixer.
No freeze and a million other things missing.

    Live
Too slow, too much of a resource hog, etc. I also like a more traditional approach.

    Reaper
I'm not crazy about the interface and it crashes on me constantly when scanning VSTs which is apparently something they have in common with FL Studio.

    Studio One
Ridiculously high CPU usage. Even with the missing features I would be willing to convert if not for the aforementioned problem or at least until other ones are discovered if I ever get the first one figured out. :lmao:

Yeah and if I could get any one of them to work normally with my computer I would be fine. This has nothing to do with me, it's bad coding plain and simple. Unless you could explain to me how freezing a track in Cubase and then having all hell break loose is somehow my fault.

Dunno i'm not you and i'm not your hardware but since 1988 i've been using cubase and like all daws none are perfect but i haven't had your bad luck because i don't know exactly what your setup or hardware is its hard to comment but what i do when i'm not sure of something i contact admin of my DAW on the forums they usually quickly reply.

You may of already tried this but get somebody well versed in computers to do some thorough testing of the hardware as you know these things can deteriorate over time, who knows it could be flakey memory or any number of things.

I would start with hardware 1st, once that has been sorted re-do the OS if the same recurring fault on any DAW rears it's head again then go back to step one because without sounding like a smart arse not all developers are in the habit of coding bad DAW's so they can lose money but like i said before none are perfect but they do produce results.

Good luck with it all

I really liked Cubase and I was hoping that it would work well for me but freezing has become a big problem since I have to rely on it due to my hardware. Of course I am using version 5 and maybe this was solved in a later release. I should be building a new computer soon but until then this is so frustrating when all you want to do is work on your music.

Try giving reaper a whirl again. I'm using reaper 4, switched from Audition 1-2 yearss? ago, and stuff runs about 2ce as fast. It doesn't crash much during VST scanning, but thenagain, i have under 150 or so. Reaper has a handy CPU usage breakdown per FX if you open up the FX chain.

You could switch to lower usage VSTs. BREVERB is one of the lowest CPU algorithmic reverbs. Toneboosters Reverb ain't too bad (in terms of CPU) either. 2C stuff I rather average I found out.

Gating, WaveArts Gate and Toneboosters are low CPU.

EQ & Compressor? Use the builtin one in your daw.

    What VSTs are you using?

I might have to do that because there's not much left for me besides frustration. I like Arturia's synths, Ace, Diva, FM8, Korg, Massive, Omnisphere, Zebra, etc. For fx I like Lexicon, Ohm Force, Plugin Alliance, Softube, Soundtoys, SSL, uhe, Voxengo, etc. It's really a shame because everything else about Studio One was really intuitive from my first impressions but CPU is a showstopper.

I`d suggest watching a few Ableton tutorials and giving Live 9 another go.

I struggled like hell with the "Eh?" factor of switching from Cubase to Live, but, once you get past "WTF?", Ableton is so immediate and fast that I just can`t ever see me going back to the old style.

Like The RoBoT says, tis all about getting down and dirty with ONE of the many and learning how that honey ticks.

Best of luck with it Catalyst. :mates:

Honestly I'm not the kind of guy that thinks the grass is greener on the other side so it's not like I'm switching because I'm bored. It's just that I keep hitting a wall with some bug or other. In Cubase when I would freeze tracks it would sometimes freak out and made continuing a project impossible, in Studio One it was the processor usage, etc. I would really LOVE to be able to just work and at this point I don't even care what DAW I use as long as it gets the job done. I guess I should give Live another go because a lot of artists I respect swear by it. I also seriously need to build another computer because I'm so sick of this crap.

dont miss the multicoreprocess (or so )button in diva

and in studio one preferences i can activate or deactivate multicoreprocess (i have 8 x 2 gb ram and i can activate / deactivate them seperatly)

when i load diva in ableton 9 / 8 its thell hell on earth , crackling and srcratchin all the time

i switched to studio one view days ago and i have no problems anymore with that

with 16 gb ram and m-audio fast track pro i can run about 4 -5 divas (depends on the preset) without freezing

so, maybe you check the settings in studio one again? i dont have exp with cubase but comparing studio one to ableton 9 - its way less cpu usage

I would not recommend StudioOne 2.5.2 as this isn't cracked from AIR.

S1 version 2.5.2 runs fine on my machine, but I have a optimized OS.
    No extra running processes !!!
I have 13 processes in idle stage on my XP-SP3.

STudioOne version 2 is using more recources, that's true.
It also has a lot more to offer then the old version.

But I tell you my trick.

I still use also the old StudioOne 1.6.5, as it runs stable as a rock and with much less CPU usage.
It's the slimmest and stablest DAW I ever used.
It offers all you need and it's newer then Cubase SX5.

Both StudioOne versions, 1 and 2 run beside on my system.(not at the same time)

Give that a try, you won't have troubles.

I tried a cracked version of Studio One and liked it so I bought it. Now after a year of use not had one crash/freeze, rock solid. Running latest version (StudioOne 2.5.2). One tip, if any vst's allow you to choose multiple cores, don't, let S1 handle it.

    Hey Bud,

    Im on Nuendo 4.3,

Dive is a CPU Hugger....if you want it to be usuable , you need to set the quality to Draft .

I tryed to work with Studio One but i never been able to even open it.

It just freezed will scanning plugin all the time.

But seriously, ive just noticed that Nuendo 4 and Cubase 5 are not that bad finaly.....compared to the newer daw out there.

Just be carefull with Diva and the Dmoox Kontakt library.

Best thing to do is to create a different project with your raw track and only 1 of those intrument there.

Give your pc a chance bud....

Let me know how it work

P.s. Dual Core.... you might want to upgrade AT least to the Q6600 series of Intel.....dual is a bit....OLD.

Just tried Diva in a Legit Studio One with 15 other plugs and it's fine. Running Intel i5 3.30GHz overclocked @ 4.20 GHz 8 gigs ram.

yeah, he says hes on a dual core.....

Im on a Q6600 with 4GB DDR2 and im glitching when i use DIVA ( in Great quality ) and a normal project with plug ins all around.

So thats what i was saying, wheiter you upgrade your PC or you bounce your track to had that extra deep juice that Diva as to offer.

    Not more choice buddy !

    Catalyst-

hmmm.... this is no good! we gotta get you making music or you will drive me crazy

since you have tried all these daws, and your system sounds more powerful than mine, maybe it is a memory problem with your system? i know memory sticks can go bad after a while...

and im sorry if you said it and i missed it but what dedicated soundcard are you using? have you updated its drivers recently?

do you boot into a separate partition when making music, disabling networking and everything not needed for making music?

if not, maybe your registry is clogged up somehow? do you have your defragger set to run on a schedule? have you ever run a program like ccleaner? it has a feature that lets you scan your registry for conflicts, duplicates, etc etc

have you checked your running processes for any strange programs you dont remember installing? check your startup programs and disable any superfluous entries? some spyware/trojans can bog a system down..i hope its nothing like that!

have you opened up your rig and blown out the dust recently?

    about DAWs-

i think you glossed over FL studio too fast, for me it has been the most stable and my CPU usage is so low its amazing until i add in the real hogs like Ozone or Melda Plugs or run 12 instances of a synth, and im running on 6 year old Vista dual core at only 1.6ghz (with a dedicated creative soundcard)

(make sure in FLStudio you run the "extended memory" exe that comes with the installation to better utilize your available RAM)

also, maybe like was said before, try lowering your sample rate to 44.1 as opposed to higher like 48?

and about freezing in FL STudio- there is no "one click" button to freeze tracks , but all you have to do is simply select your desired range on the timeline, arm disc recording for selected channel and it bounces out the track no problem, then you just smart disable or delete plug ins... no big whoop!! just cause there isnt a one button solution is no reason to knock the DAW lol

besides, the piano roll feature would be great for your melody-block syndrome you are currently experiencing.

imo, FLStudio has the best workflow for purely electronic musicians

    yeah, i said it
    [IMG]
    ..

and ive been using Ableton for a few years now and have had no problems performance wise, although it seems to have a high CPU load on one core when using multi-core machine... again, maybe you can lower your sample rate to 44.1? it is a bit hard to get used to the layout and interface, but once you do it's amazing what it can do for live remixes, fun "in-daw" mixing sessions.... there are things LIVE can do that no other DW can do..although now FLStudio has the cool new LIVE like features as well

So, you still have to try ProTools for windows and Sequoia..

    ****

Sorry this is happening to you man, i hate it when shit stops working for no reason, when it was fine yesterday

it can really drive you bonkers

Thanks for all the replies everyone.

The multi-threaded option in Diva seems to actually make things worse which I don't really get. I didn't really change any of the settings in Studio One except changing from ASIO4ALL to Creative ASIO and also adding a MIDI controller. It's a shame because there were certain things that I really liked about it. I might have to wait until I get a better computer to really be unfettered with my music making. :(

    Carface
Yeah I might give Studio One 1 a try.

    WhitePhazer
Thanks for the tip man, I'll keep that in mind.

In Diva I utilize fast mode because draft mode isn't working well. Also I really like Cubase and it has very low resource consumption but there are a few things that drive me crazy about it. I'm still trying to troubleshoot the problems I am having because I think Cubase is one of the most powerful DAWs out there and it would be a shame to give up on it.

I can always count on you to not only offer to help but also find a way to make me laugh in the process, we really should hang out one day in person. I'm using a Creative X-Fi which is just a horrid freaking sound card. To give you an idea of just how crappy, even though they tout it as a low latency card I'm here to tell you that they're full of shit because I get 60ms latency. I am the kind of person that updates everything because I know outdated drivers and software can cause major problems. There was a release in January but it was really the same drivers from 2011 with an update for Windows 8. I'm not currently running a partitioned system but when I make music I disable everything I can. I disable ESET and kill off any extra unnecessary processes. I tend to have a lot because I also have Visual Studio and SQL Server as well as Adobe Creative Suite installed. I do regular defrags and move most recently used files to the perimeter of the disk. I don't think it's malware because I have a firewall setup as well as a good antivirus and I do regular scans with MalwareBytes and sometimes SUPERAntiSpyware. Of course that doesn't mean it's impossible because lately I am having an issue and I don't know if it is related to flash or what but sometimes after watching a YouTube video my soundcard becomes unavailable and when I click on the Creative Volume meter it tells me that it can't find a supported audio device. I've been trying to solve this issue but it's extremely difficult to pin down why this is happening though as usual I believe it to be because of Flash the method Adobe is using to take the internet hostage. Concerning FL Studio: I'm not knocking the DAW as I know plenty of accomplished artists that are using it but there are plenty of things I don't like about it though of course the piano roll isn't one of them as it's probably the best out there. I hate the mixer, I don't like their implementation of sidechaining and about a million other issues I have with it. Cubase is way more efficient than FL Studio and I find I can push my system harder with better settings. I actually have used it as my primary DAW more than any other. I don't even want to try ProTools and I'd really like my DAW to be one of those I listed because in my opinion for the Windows platform you won't find better. Studio One has some really intuitive features and if they keep expanding it like they're doing there is a good chance that it will beat all other offerings out there at the moment. Really I need to upgrade my damn computer because this is only an exercise in frustration more than anything else. You would think that odds are good that at least something could go right but nope. *no*

    SirSillySausage
Yeah that's what I usually do but it's crazy when I have to bounce so soon in the process.
