The Geist2 2.0.6.5 installer does not work on OS X Catalina. I just get this error. Does anyone know of any solution? Is it possible to somehow extract the .component files and all the other necessary files from the installer and create the directories manually and put the files where they are supposed to be?

Catalina has only been supported since latest G2 update (january 2020), which is version 2.1.2.13

I'm aware. I just want to know if there is some kind of workaround to install this somehow.

Don't think so no, since the way I understood it - I don't use catalina and I'm by no mean a MacOS expert - the whole point of Catalina is to keep apps that don't fit its new bill from installing at all. Which is why every devs had to work long and hard to make their soft and installers catalina - able. I'm not aware of any workaround short of that.

imagine if microsoft came out with windows 11 and said no software that ran in previous versions of windows (including the latest release of windows 10) can be run in this os. do you think there might be a bit of an uproar?

As far as I know Catalina cut support for 32bit apps and Geist2 is 64bit so it should work. I just suspect that the installer itself is faulty and that there should be some way to get the .component file out of it. So far Geist2 is the only plugin that has been problematic for me to install on Catalina.

Crazy part is it has happened on Windows, part of the reason they have compatibility mode.

Also this happened on OS 9 to OS X 20+ years ago. Going from 9 to X broke almost everything.

    • Mac OS 9 and the Classic Environment
PowerPC versions of OS X prior to 10.5 include a compatibility layer (a shell) called Classic, enabling users to run applications and hardware requiring Mac OS 9 from within OS X. This is achieved through running Mac OS 9 without access to its Finder inside OS X. ... Mac OS 9.2.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_9#:~:text=Mac OS 9 and the Classic Environment,-Main article: Classic&text=PowerPC versions of OS X,its Finder inside OS X.&text=Mac OS 9.2.

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

This is absolutely not comparable. MS has always tried to maintain extensive compatibility with existing infrastructures and only accepted incompatibility in an emergency.

The same applies to apple computer inc.'s switch from Mac OS 9 to Max OSX. The old operating system (OS9) was built in such a way that Apple was practically at the end of its possibilities. A new operating system was needed, OS9 simply could not be saved.
Among other things, BEOS was on the shortlist and would probably have won the race if the owner (Jean-Louis Gassée) had not been too greedy.
In this situation Steve Jobs stepped on the floor with NexT computer and sold Apple for about $500 million his Unix-based operating system (Mach kernel).
This was adapted in a very, very short time so that a large number of software programs could continue to run. Not all of them admittedly, but most of them (on a completely different OS. That was a great achievement!). This is how Apple was rescued, otherwise it would have been broke weeks or months later.

The current situation is completely different: Without a real need, the operating system is modified in such a way that most software applications no longer run. The software manufacturers are supposed to adapt to Apple. This is done primarily for security reasons they say, but in the background it is probably more to gain even further control over the operating system, customers and 3rd party software vendors.

Interesting read on apple computer inc switch from OS9 to OSX: Gil Amelio "In the firing line" and Walter Isaacson "Steve Jobs" and several other books on apple computers inc.

so what you're saying is that windows made it possible to run the existing applications by including "compatibility mode". doesn't sound the same at all.

full disclosure: i'm not a mac owner. i am basing my comments on the endless number of posts asking "why doesn't this work in catalina?"

Ok, so I got help from a friend that still had High Sierra on his system. He installed it to his system and we copied all of the folders and files that was installed on his system from the Geist2 installer. If you have access to a mac with High Sierra (maybe even Mojave), then install Geist2 and the Factory content on it and then do this:

Create a folder in the Desktop and name it "Catalina" or whatever.

In Macintosh HD\Library\Application Support copy the "FXpansion" folder to the Catalina folder.
In Macintosh HD\Library\Audio\Plug-Ins\Components copy the "Geist2.component" and "Spitter2.component" files to the Catalina folder
In Macintosh HD\Library\Audio\Plug-Ins\VST copy the "Geist2.vst" and "Spitter2.vst" files to the Catalina folder

To copy factory content (optional if you installed the factory content as well):
In Macintosh HD\Users\(username)\Documents copy the FXpansion folder to the Catalina folder (Make sure not to replace the other folder with the same name! You need to rename this folder for now, just remember to rename it back to FXpansion when you've transferred it over to Catalina)

Now just transfer the "Catalina" folder over to your Catalina system and move all the files and folders to where they are supposed to be. Use the included FX license manager and KG to authorize the plugin and VOILA! Done :)

There's probably an easier way to extract these files somehow, just couldn't find another way. I think if it would get re-uploaded with the installer files already extracted for Catalina users it would be a lot simpler.

Geist 1 was working for a few months on Catalina, then stopped. I managed to get it running via Time Machine but now it's stuck in demo mode. The issue isn't that Geist won't run; it's that FxPansion haven't enabled it to be authrized in the licence manager, the lazy b*****s.
