Excellent Tutorial on how the CS 80 works. Because it's one of those synths that I find totally confusing when I see the GUI:

A good tutorial for users of Arturia's CS80 emulation to learn more about this beast. This rare beast is currently costing over $20k as it is one of the hardest vintage synths to find.

 

It retailed at $6,900 in 1977 which adjusted for inflation is like $30k today

 

We had a CS80 at university where I studied 2016-2019. I miss it.

There's a modern clone called Deckard's Dream that seems to go for "cheap" ~4000eur. Needless to say that Me Wanna, Me Seriously Wanna.

*edit:* They're also coming up with Deckard's Voice a monophonic Eurorack version having the same design. Currently on pre-order for 700usd, which is reachable by us mere mortals. If I ever go mad and get a modular then this would be first on my shopping list.

They have one of the Deckard's Dream MK2 In stock at Thoman so I'm gonna sell one of my nuts to a used human parts concern here in Europe, and after paying for it will still have about four hundred Euros left over to also finance a Behringer Model D. So, I'll start a poll here...which testicle should I sacrifice for the cause, the left or the right?

You miss the main point.
99 % of the signature sound of CS80 is in polyphonic aftertouch and the ribbon controller for pitch glide sound effects or slides.(And you don't get them with this Dekard's dream, you have to buy a proper keyboard and ribbon controller on your own)
Sounds that CS80 produces are pretty limited (and any decent vst in the last 10 or more years can replicate it with DAW automations or proper midi controller)
Modern MPE keyboards by Roli (for example) are even better for playing expressive stuff.

 

You're the one being clueless here if you assume that you can make a mono voice do poly aftertouch.

That thing is like a patchable CS-30 (or thereabouts) on steroids.

 

I know, @23322332 but does the Roli Seaboard have four buttons labelled "funky"? Well, does it!? :D

 

Had a CS-60 about 40 years ago. Couldn't afford the 80. Opened up the lid once and there was literally miles of wire and ribbon connectors. Never saw anything like it. Can't wait to try out the new Behringer clone when it arrives.

It was a really a wonderful tutorial. Now I just have to buy the CS80.

Ok I'll just manage the ME80 for the moment.

 

Pure preset "Bladerun aftertouch", no effect added.

 

It works just through what Mr. Papathanassiou did with it back in the days, on certain tracks of his. Some may call it geniality, others talent. So if you really want to get the sonical power of that instrument, you have to buy this musician and his setup, together with the instrument. Not sure if one could pay the price, and afterwards the amount of diapers, cream cakes and cigarettes (probably synthesized by now) for said musician, who is also pretty schweigsam and grumpy.
Otherwise you will get just an old fart of an organ-looking synthesizer that will catch dust and need new condensators every second month, filling your studio with noisy hum of its ventilation when running. But you can sleep under it as it has oven functionality in terms of energy consumption. If you buy the Deckards Dream you will get an expensive equaliser with additional value.
I won't recommend selling nuts for any of these machines. There cannot be as much fun with them as with your nuts.
