I wonder what Schopenhauer thought of the never-mentioned 9% who, according to this quote, neither of them is a fool nor wise.
If this was Schopenhauer's only writing, I'd count him as one of the idiots. This aphorism is one of those that only seems catchy at first glance. Above all, it sucks up to the reader, who naturally thinks he belongs to the 1%.
Or a film: "The wise, the fool and the sucker" On the other hand, I guess it doesn't make a good name for a cracking team...
Yeah, i too was wondering about the 9%, so i did a quick google on Shopenhauer - along with a trawl through a quote mine by the man - and i couldn't find anything even close... the nearest i got to the quote attributed to Shopenhauer is actually by the auther T.H.White, who intones that the other 9(%) are scurvy politicians (obviously) - along with a whole bunch of self-referencing, socially nihilistic guff... Jay-Z, on the other hand, reckons “A wise man told me don't argue with fools. Cause people from a distance can't tell who is who.”... which arguably is the soundest interpretation supplied so far. The mere mention of Jay-Z here should be a warning to the wise about foolishly following bizarre, rabbit-hole threads all the way to this meaningless point. Last edited: Feb 18, 2020
And so on the basis of a muddled slur from @mp5, what are we supposed to fantasise about Schopenhauer's beliefs? Are we supposed to believe Schopenhauer was totally contemptuous of women? or just someone that thought most of humanity (any gender) were fools? What does the following quote say about Schopenhauer's attitude to women? Schopenhauer:...“I have not yet spoken my last word about women. I believe that if a woman succeeds in withdrawing from the mass, or rather raising herself from above the mass, she grows ceaselessly and more than a man.” hmmm? - but then again - should we trust Internet quotes? "Most of what you read on the Internet is unreliable" quote... Abraham Lincoln. So there you have it. except for @Paul Pi's wise postscript
Schopenhauer...i dont think this 90% 1% zitat exists in german.. and he bitch slapped bout men also as bout woman.. and you must calibrate for other times 19 century
If social media can hurt people and you're easily hurt, don't use social media. I think people have forgotten "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me". I personally think that people, including celebrities, who already have a low opinion of themselves, go on social media, waiting for the comments that will confirm their conclusion that they are worthless because they had already decided long ago to end their life because of self-loathing. I mean look at this case. She even created a situation that she knew would lead to court and bad publicity about her. She staged it all. No judgement. Perhaps her soul decided that she had already achieved all that she needed to or planned to in this incarnation. Last edited: Feb 18, 2020
To people who read more than just plethora of internet posts & some ad hoc quotes Schopenhauer's attitude towards women is very well known from his books [one of them being "Metaphysics of Love"]. Otto Weininger, who was partially inspired by Schopenhauer, concluded that women do not exist, and that they borrow their existence from men ("Sex and Character"). Those are considered great western philosophers, nobody's obliged to oblige. Anyway, I am about to believe I have never met any of them (women) on this 'sex site' yet? Compatible with Schopenhauer, Weininger or both?
So, according to you, 'scurvy politicians (obviously) - along with a whole bunch of self-referencing, socially nihilistic guff' do not belong to suckers?
