I have one 27" Asus PVA and one 24" ProArt IPS that is turned vertical. I've had them for years, Asus monitors have never failed me. I am usually multitasking and don't like to open and close things all the time, I could even use a third monitor.

 

If you don't mind super small pixel pitch, I would recommend 4K. However if you want to avoid eye-tiring dots, it would be better to choose 24~27 FHD dual setup. I prefer large dots to make my eyes comfortable, so I'm using dual monitors which are 27 FHD. It certainly need to move your head a little due to wide panel space, but I think it's quite acceptable.

 

tbh I found 27" 1440p to be the sweet spot between amount of information on screen and not having to throw the resolution and software compatibility out the window by scaling

 

If it's better for you,no problem mate.Having many monitors stresses me,disturbs me,I don't like their light,I don't feel comfortable.Pushing on F12 or F3 to display the mixer is not an issue at all for me personnally.With the money for a second monitor I prefer to buy a good,big faderport that I find more useful for improving the workflow.
Btw,with 2x 48" monitors,your studio must be very large.How are they placed?

It's even worse if the mixer just use one fifth of the screen.Don't you find it's a shame to have an enormous monitor for just using one fifth of it?
You display your plugins on this empty space?

 

Just a reminder, i have 2 x 30" not 48s but i plan on buying 2 x 43", is what i wrote, but np. My monitors are placed next to each other horizontally at the center of my desk. My Focal Twin 6s are to the side of the monitors and my sub 6 is center down on a "special low" stand i made. I do have a bit of room, my control is about 30 square mtrs. The whole studio is about 85.

Depends on which soft i work at the time, but usually my secondary monitor displays the mixer, the piano roll/midi editor, audio editor or equivalent, and sample browser or plugin gui at times. I will always have the mixer, piano roll and some sample explorer/manager on my secondary monitor no matter the DAW. My DAWs are Cubase Pro, Cakewalk, Acid Pro, Ableton Live, Pro Tools, Logic. I also work with dual monitor windows on Wavelab and Sound Forge. Vegas and Premiere too. Photoshop as well. There is no serious soft that doesn't support multi windows. It makes life so much easier.

Very similar workflow as mine, except I have UAD console open on 3rd monitor at all times. It's very comfortable for me to have arrange window & mixer window open side by side.

Oh well, it's just a matter of taste and workflow. There's no right or wrong if it makes you creative while you work

 

Sure docteur Taskforce,you're right,dual screen support should be the standard.However it isn't possible in Live,is it?

That is correct for very old versions, i remember someone wrote a script for moving the mixer to a second monitor if i recall correctly, but i never used it. Now it supports dual monitors but not the best way possible. Still, something is better than nothing

one 34" 3440x1440 is what I consider best compromise,
having 2 monitors with nasty bezel in the middle is awkward

 

sharpness. 4k is not about screen estate it is meant to improve the image quality. That''s the main idea of UltraHD or Retina Displays. Under Windows you should technically get the best results with a scaling factor of 200%. (since there are no half pixels ;) Imagine a BIG screen with sharpness of an iPad.
