Gosh, 233etc, you state many absolutes without any reference, so I'm calling you out to name five classical composers that you are intimate with that are not at all known due to not being hurled to the forefront by the critics through the centuries. And as well, there are songs like Bohemian Rhapsody that slammed on the radio that bare no resemblance to a standard song, among others.

So please, argue coherently so we don't mistake your posts for trolling.

(I have time to kill right now, just watching young girls jump and twirl in in tight pants while skimming effortlessly away on blades of steel within the confines of a milky white, frozen artifical pond)

Lois, please take back your winner rating. The opposite of what I said was actually intended. I'm with @23322332 .

A recurring problem? How do we know that's not true again?

Wounded by your own sarcasm - you've gotta laugh at that.:winker:

i start jamming on a synth a 4 bar loop, adjust tempo , add some more weird synth lines, change presets quickly until it's quirky and odd, add drums /bass/guitars, move on quick. finger play some drums/bass with modo drum/bass. duplicate scene, delete some parts, add new parts.
duplicate drums, play completely new odd things , if too busy remove manythings. i never finish a song :) i have 250 in the "making" :)

  6. According to Encyclopædia Britannica, the "monodic textures that originated about 1600 … were ready-made, indeed in large measure intended, for improvisational enhancement, not only of the treble parts but also, almost by definition, of the bass, which was figured to suggest no more than a minimal chordal outline."

Bach was born in 1685. I am not even sure because nobody alive today was there, that compositions were even called compositions? They may have been called 'works of music'. Who knows? Based on what Britannica suggests, improvisations as we have labelled them today sound like they may have been chunks of music or even themes to expand upon? None of us were there, so I suppose we will never know for sure.

    1) Too many to list... why not try browsing any sheet music site, you will find plenty of unknown names...
We have talked plenty about the influence of critics on talkclassical and reddit, maybe you should research more about guys like E.T.A. Hoffmann (romantic/fantasy writer that was also critic - he was such a fanatic - even changed one of his names to "Amadeus", what more can I say, fans were crazy even back then).
    2) Well, technically this type of composition should be clasified as "medley", not a song.
    3) Who cares, seriously?

My last post here...I'm letting the troll(ing) give me agita.

Bohemian Rhapsody is a song with disparate parts and which gel together to form a blissful amalgam of joyful ear and mind candy. Two other songs which accomplish the same goal would be Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven and Radiohead's Paranoid Android. There are others.

Which full fleshed out songs, in your keen knowledge, does Bohemian Rhapsody string together in order to create in your imagination a medley?

In music, a medley is a piece composed from parts of existing pieces, usually three, played one after another, sometimes overlapping. They are common in popular music, and most medleys are songs rather than instrumental. ... A medley is the most common form of overture for musical theater productions.

I wasn't going to post in here, not because the original post isn't a reasonable question, (it is). But because it is evident that people in general have a really hard time staying on topic. I understand this post is also slightly off topic, but only to bring up everyone else's off topic comments.

Because the question asked is so specific, hence the quote from @Ad Heesive above. So why are any of you arguing about others peoples compositions after the fact? And if you think you aren't arguing, I refer you to the quote above from @Lois Lane.

So each person should be discussing, "what works for you?" Not posting videos about individuals who can't comment for themselves about how they composed their own works.

In other words there should be nothing but "I statements." I use this, I do that, I hit this drum, I record on this device. I use this VSTi.

Back on topic. To answer the OP directly. Every way you mentioned is exactly how I compose and more. But i noticed for myself, at any given moment in time, the method with which I arrive at a finished track is limited by two factors. First, the musical and recording tools at my disposal, and second, my command of those tools multiplied by my knowledge of music language at the moment in time. For example, before ear training and music theory classes, it was almost impossible to write a song starting with the melody first, I didn't know how harmonize chords over a given melody. But now it doesn't matter where i begin a song, with the rhythm, harmony or the melody it's all simple now.

On the other hand, since i still don't own a drum-set of any kind, I am forced to program drum parts. Which makes me have a tendency to start with that, as opposed to some other instrument first. Also, since i don't have any hardware synths just plugged in ready to go. The odds of me starting a song with a synth-like timbre is slim. Because I have to open a daw, and then choose from one of the synths i have, then pick an arbitrary preset just to noodle around with a melody I may or may not be hearing right then.

In summation, the question is "How do YOU what YOU do?" Not, "how do others do what they do?" There should be no arguments. Because you do what you do, and no one can argue against what has already been done.

Great discussion! Thanx for this topic
My two cents: about inspiration. For me personally the most important part of the process is to get inspired. Some time ago my emotional experiences were enough to "hear that melody". But then I discovered that I can easily "convert" my friends' and even strangers' the most personal intimate stories about love/loss/desperation... into music tracks. It's all about empathy I guess.

We all think that we know sth but that sth is nothing.

One thing which makes me laugh a lot is hearing sb saying "I do this for harmony, I do that for melody, I do this for rhythm". This is very funny.

Over The Hills And Far Away is probably an even better example of a Led Zeppelin song that just sort of meanders from one part to the next, but in an entertaining way.
