The mixing console company Solid State Logic is entering the affordable soundcard market.

A staple of recording studios since the '70s, SSL is synonymous with high-end studio technology, with their console, EQ and compressor designs spawning countless software emulations in the past two decades. The English company now appears to have pivoted to the opposite end of the market with two reasonably priced soundcards aimed at home studios.

The SSL 2 and SSL 2+ are both USB-powered designs with a pair of SSL mic inputs, balanced outputs and 24-bit/192kHz analogue-to-digital conversion. They also come with a suite of SSL plug-ins and a Legacy 4K mode, which colours your signal in the style of SSL's 4000 series consoles. The SSL 2+ has MIDI I/O, an extra set of unbalanced RCA outputs and an additional headphone out.

The SSL 2 costs $229.99 while the SSL 2+ retails for $279.99.

Although these are probably good units, they should be USB 3.0 A/USB-C 3.0 at a minimum. January 2020 & USB 2.0?

Agree. It's like SSL is allergic to the prosumer market. Is it too much to ask for true SuperAnalogue pres and competitive converters? SSL's answer to the Apollo Twin/Symphony Desktop would surely be incredibly special and sell like hot cakes, I imagine. Someone in product development needs a new job.

Wow. Cheap! A bit too cheap...
    Maybe they're 'doing a Behringer'!

Strange coincidence: this morning I was going through a box of trade mags, and I picked out SOS August 2006, and it had the review of the Duende! For £999.

Some of the other products in there were Chris Hein Horns Volume 1, Garritan Stradivari Solo Violin, and the Neve 8816 Analogue Summing Mixer!
    Awww! Happy days, eh?

Looking good but I am wondering if the new MOTU M2 / M4 aren't even better at this price point?

2 inputs 4 outputs? USB 2? This is so 2015 2016 product, it should have been, at least 4 inputs 6 outputs, plus adat and something similar to the asp800 asp880, to support the lineup, so you could upgrade your audio interface whenever you can, they're solely using the ssl brand to sell their products. Disappointing.

Look like a great bargain... SSL with that price point... ADDA converter is AKM.. but the downside for me is... only 2 output, I wish it is 4 output so it can be set up for dual monitor speaker, the like ID22 from Audient... even the 2+ are just an additional headphone out and midi i/o. Erghh I don't need multiple headphones out.

and no Adat, no optical, no digital i/o ... good price but lack of expanding possibility and features. Let wait and see how the driver works.

Seems kinda sketchy. It says it's got "SSL designed preamps" and "4k inspired color enhancement". But for $200 it's clearly not the preamps from a console and color enhancement is probably just some sort of drive. Which is cool I guess but I would have rather they put a cheap compressor or eq in there. And they really don't go into detail about what exactly those preamps or enhancement are. And there's no ADAT? And it's usb 2.0?? This seems really rushed. If this was more expensive I'd be more interested. Seems to me like a money grab for newbies. You're looking for your first audio interface and you don't know what to get and then you see Oh! SSL has an interface, I've heard they're good, Oh! and it's affordable! and bam you buy it. I probably would have done the same thing.

Granted I'm sure it's probably a quite adequate card but it just seems like they're really trying to use their name to sell it.

I'd rather just spend an extra $100 and buy an 18in 20out behringer :dunno:

Headphone jack on the backside :deep_facepalm:
USB port on the upper side :wtf:

    No real SSL preamps :dont:
    Ugly design

    Made in China

    Latency... Drivers stability... :dunno:
Conclusion: Too pricey for an SSL sticker... :suicide:

"I mean it’s not that you are paying 200EUR for two Discrete SSL Preamps, they are designed by SSL (with good specs) but still probably just custom or slightly modified ICs, they don’t even give you top line ADs and DAs, products like the new budget MOTUs use the nicer 32Bit AD-DAs. This thing is still Bus powered, approx 2W per channel won’t really get you that much. Great to see competition within the low price bracket but people shouldn't be fooled into thing that you can pay 200EUR for that sweet “SSL Sound”." - Felipe Vareschi @

The Motu M2 & M4 interfaces i recently demo'ed represent a new level of performance in budget cards. Sorry, these SSLs look already dated and overpriced. Why they even call those SSL i wonder... Which reminds me they have a new analog 200k console with no compression besides the master bus. So much for stepping up to 2020. Ahh np.
