Is there hardware or a sampler that can degrade the sample rate really low like around 2khz?

I think you mean 2Hz. Maschine's Sampler goes to 108Hz. Try Redux in Ableton. There are other plugins. TAL-DAC goes to 1000Hz.
Eventually it just becomes noise and also also not audible to human hearing.

Edit: Oh, you said hardware. I missed that. Nevermind then.

TAL-Sampler has internal resampling to the Nyquist frequency of 8000Hz (meaning 4kHz, not 2kHz). It could be enough for what you want to do/achieve.

Otherwise, use the free Tritik Crush bitcrusher (set downsampling to taste and LPF to 2k).

Thank you all for your replies! I meant 2khz i don't need to degrade a sample any lower than 2khz then it starts to sound ugly.

I know of the tal and various other software that can do this and they are great indeed but I was looking to see if there was a hardware equivalent to give me that "underwater" sound when running samples/signal through it. I know various samples lets you degrade the sample rate but it's never as low as what these plugins are capable of. At least I haven't seen or heard of one that can.

Maybe there is a way to mod a hardware sampler to make it capable of degrading to lower samples. Something to think about.

Underwater? Why not just use a lowpass filter (and layer it with hydrophonic recordings of bubbles, if needed)?

 

Degrading the sample gives you the same effect and sounds a bit different from a lowpass filter even with a 6th order filter to my ears at least especially if you degrade it really low.

Also by doing that you eliminate those frequencies completely which doesn't happen with a lowpass. I prefer to degrade the sample rate for the underwater effect.

 

Ok. So you basically want to pitch down a sample a lot? Makes sense. The grit is pretty nice.

 

Something like that lol just experimenting and taking measures to extreme to do the same thing in different ways to stand out. If you find or hear of hardware like I mentioned in OP lmk plz!

 

Any HW sampler would work I guess. I used to have old Akai samplers (love/hate relationship compared to today's sampler). I just created a rumbling "underwater" sound now. Took 15 seconds.

 

I take that back too apologies. when degrading a sample rate using vst I never go lower than 2khz because you are right it breaks up and it does't sound good anymore. I don't need a sampler to go any lower than 2,000 khz in my opinion. Had to clear that up. That is probably why you were wondering why would I want or need to degrade anything that low to 2hz lol

 

If you don't mind me asking. How low did could your akai samplers use to degrade the samples too and what sampler are you using now?

 

No worries. I have pitched down sounds 7-8 octaves for sound design jobs to get what I wanted.

I don't remember how low I could pitch the samples down as the extreme experimentation started after my "hardware era". I was more focused on getting the "best" sound I could at the time. Haha.

Today I'm using Vember Shortcircuit 2 sampler (free). It's the best!

Thanks I never tried that vst out I have to give it a try! I just lately (don't roast me) been listening to alot of artist like drake (genreic mainstream I know) and partynextdoor's music. I know that their camp relies heavily on degrading and processing samples in a very unique way that way the vocals can occupy the top.

I understand there are many ways of degrading a sample you can low pass it or use a vst like you mentioned but they are either using some sort of outboard hardware processing on their samples as well to get this grit I hear as well. I would love to know exactly how they process their samples.

Sounds more like saturation and filters. But that's just me (and my old experienced ears).

Start with saturation/distortion and run it through filters (lowpass, highpass, bandpass...).

 

I take things to extremes when i hear/see them. Listen to Baxter. Even TAL-DAC goes to 1000Hz

Dude you telling me about that vst might have just answered my question. F the hardware sampler this shit is unreal. This plugin sounds crazy
