  1. The worst ever was Cubase around version SX3 when it had the Poof bug. You'd be using it and Poof it was gone. No explanation, no apparent reason to it, just Poof it was gone, hello desktop.

Things have come a long way since then.

Oh man, the story of my life lol, at least the recent years.
And don't get me started with MIDI plugins besides DAWs...

Edited: I looked at Tracktion Waveform MIDI features and are indeed impressive! Gonna dig in this version.
Really a big improvement since the version I tested (T7 I think)

  3. I only use the piano roll in FL Studio to create metronom beats so I can lay down live tracks, or sometimes a repeating pad or a rough couple of measures of the same from a synth. The built in sequencer of xFER Nerve is super easy to use for the same reason. I always prefer to play drum parts with percussion instruments, found objects or on my keyboard from samples even if I will loop bits of it here and there.

I use the MPC software for sequencing, and the piano roll in Sonar. I also experiment with a free plugin called Transition which has the same end result of sending midi commands to an instrument but the user interface is wildly different ( bots moving in sync to DAW bouncing around inside a gridded square) and I end up making interesting mistakes. Lots of fun to mess with.

A music sequenceror play back mus my ip birthday wishes tneb ic, by handling note and performance information in several forms, typically CV/Gate, MIDI, or Open Sound Control (OSC), and possibly audio and automation data for DAWs and plug-ins.

I've spent the last few months making my own sequencer in Max. Using the Function object. It started out as an arpeggiator but now I'm using it to drive a bunch of different devices in an Instrument Rack. Lots of Simplers with a lot of slices. It looks like this:

I added the curves so you can take the timing off the quantized grid. It's my secret weapon.

Amazing... The OP can hear mathematic and see colors in vibrations that travel through the air an be heard when they reach a person's ear.

Please, give me your dealer contact. That is some proper dope you're getting.

Of course any audible differences will mainly be due to how the person uses the software, and that is a valid aspect.
If everything is set up exactly the same there should be no difference, but to actually get everything set up the same could be a huge chore.
Looking at all the tracks and matching output from plugins and channel levels and all that could be pretty fast or take a long time.
If seems like if it is all audio with few FX it would be quicker, but if it's got a lot of VSTi and lots of FX ...

And kudos to those who have gone through and tested all that stuff and more, down to that stuff I can't even comprehend. I know what they are doing ... But it is like saying "I know how chess is played, but I can not PLAY CHESS".

I remember trying to move a project from Sonar to FL Studio and ended up just making a final in Sonar.
It was just an amateur group recorded live with a few mics and then I added my own VSTi tracks with piano, synth and drums.
I had a tempo map because there was no click track for them, and I never figured a tempo map for FL studio.
But even with the recorded audio tracks muted I never got quite the same feeling from the VSTi instruments.
Going back into Sonar and turning off the tempo map, i began to think it was just because it was mostly generic quantized, and without the timing map to give some variation it just didn't sound right. And of course losing the audio mix made my it obvious how lame my MIDI tracks were..

People rave about FL Studio's Piano roll tools, but I miss having an event list and more precise envelope tools (Sonar has both).
But it is hard to beat FL Studio's timeline for playing with song structures and lots more...

I'm old enough to know what trackers are but too young to have used them legitimately. Then I found SunVox.
Have you guys tried this shit? So cool.

SunVox is great but I just can't become friends with its UI.
I'd rather construct something inside VCVRack or Audulus, even if it takes more time.

Some DAW like Reaper, allows the user to chose the internal engine quality, it can make a difference when the mixdown is done entirely inside the DAW. Usually higher bit depth engine allows for more dynamic range and more headroom. I like to use an external analog mixer used with flat levels to sum some busses coming from the DAW that usually adds some more sound separation, but to be honest, with today's updates, even mixing all inside the DAW (no matter which one), is ok and what it really matters is to follow the basic rules of a good mixdown.

I started with FL Studio 10 back in 2012, made some tracks, some of them have been lost after switching computers. In meantime I also tried Avid's Pro Tools, before trying Cubase Pro, which I think might be the software of my choice. Or maybe Nuendo? Well, worth giving a try later.
