If Stravinsky had had access to this thread Rite Of Spring would have turned out WAY better.

 

He did have access to it (the concepts being discussed)that's what he used have you heard it and seen the way it's put together ?

He wrote understanding the possibilities in several contexts from tonal to polytonal to atonal .
He wrote deliberate excersising free will.
He never picked random notes .
He had a clear artistic vision before he began composing .
When you hear something it's because he did it on purpose
( He didn't write ignorant of music theory )
He wrote with a great deal of knowledge and intent.

Oh, you say that but he clearly didn't have your insight and methods of really clearly understanding every possible permutation of every chord and every possibility. And being able to process it all in a simpler more complete format. I just think he could have done better. It's kind of you to recognize what he accomplished though with the inferior tools of his time though. Especially since what he was doing was considered a pretty radical leap forward in terms of harmony in classical music. Some were pretty sure he was absolutely mangling the established rules of the day but luckily we have hindsight.

 

I think he did have all that because he demonstrates clearly that he had it. Right in his music he is showing a type of rare wisdom and understanding . Your sarcasm is shortsighted .

Everything has its place. Prioritizing one above the other is foolhardy, just as is dismissing the validity of any component that makes up the whole. Music is to be enjoyed. Robotize it and it is no longer human.

 

Well I think of theory as being extra colours on an artists palette who would rather have less than more?Then again all hues are made from primary colours and maybe the joy is in the mixing?

If you have a gift for making a melody (and it can reside in your head and you can just hum it) and it's the catchiest damned melody, then knowing about theory isn't going to make that melody any catchier.

For example, let's assume that the simple, almost childish melody from his 9th Symphony popped into his head one morning while he was eating his Cornflakes. He was German so they were Kornenflaken. It was his innate genius that created that melody, not his understanding of the complexities of orchestration. He didn't reject the basic three chord structure of this part because it lacked a theoretical complex structure.
