    I'm really going nuts...
I want to calculate the square root (3rd root) of a number....lets say 27. The result obvisually is 3. But how to type it into the Windows 10 calculator? See the picture below. Thats how I did...but the result is wrong!
Of cause I also pressed the = at the end! :)

You mixed up x and y in typing! 27 [that math sign] 3 = 3

And btw, that's not the square root. Square root of 27 = 5,1961524227066318805823390245176. :winker:

Indeed 3 is the square root of 9.

Boah...Yes you are right! I'm such an idiot! But the square root is the 3rd root...5,19 is the "root" of 27....or isnt there the simple word "root" in english? Or what is the name for the 3rd root? Is it "cubic root"? But if so why is the short word "sqrt3" then?
    So for german speakers:
    Wenn ich diesen Webrechner nehme:

    https://web2.0rechner.de/

Wurzel?

Ach was weiß ich?

In English: square root is the second root, third is the, err, third. [IMG]

@Olymoon PLZ close this thread as fast as you can! Its already embarrassing enough for me! :deep_facepalm::knock:

The calculator is indeed one of the many examples of how MS changed stuff for worse in recent OS versions :dunno:

I really needed about 10 minutes to find out you have to press the "2nd" button to swap to the second site of mathematic symbols! :woot:

    "Is it "cubic root"?"

I always called it the cubed root.

Click on the windows calculator and select (View/ scientific) you want X (and small raised 3) for cubed

    Apologies (I'm using win7)

For win 10 you need the menu button top left of the calc. and choose scientific!

    x and small raised 3

The OP changed the order of the calculation. Many calculators will give the same result.
Another way that works even on simpler calculators is to divide and then use exponentiation. No need for taking roots. In this example we need the third root. That's 1/3 = 0.(3333333333333). So, y^0.(33333333333333333) gives the third root of any number "y".

When you look at the picture in my first post you can see, I was clever enough to do so! "Wissenschaftlich" is "Scientific" in german. And on Win 10 there's no x and small raised 3 but as you can see a x and small raised y :winker:
