AMD should be getting serious attention from software developers now!

Android is far from Desktop in terms of the complexity of the software. It is a wrong expectation to wait for ARM to get into the Desktop market, while Intel and AMD are already killing it. ARM has nothing new to offer...

    https://www.theverge.com/2019/5/29/18643905/intel-amd-arm-cpu-computex-2019-future-announcements

People cannot rewrite all the software written for X64_x86 and other platforms again for ARM!

x86 should have been dead years ago. And so much wrong information in all of this. but not even gonna state an opinion. This forum is toxic enough as it is.

AMD making more CPU cores will not magically make devs learn how to parallel program (efficiently). Because it's hard.

The hard part seems to be getting over the fear of change. If Microsoft, as an example did what Apple did, Windows users would be much more productive. I have said for years that Microsoft should have started a new OS from scratch instead of just developing around & carrying forward problems inherent in Windows coding.

I know is probably unlikely, but AMD should acknowledge this, less power consumption, less generated heat (due to 7nm) and more powerful processing power, perfect for their laptop as well as their hardware. but from what it have been going around, Apple is going ARM, which is if you ask me, a big kick to their great portion of their consumers. but time is on our side, we will see what's going to happen.

AMD is also in this space along with others. AMD & Microsoft developed custom chip for A surface laptop/notebook model. AMD also has the mobile 5500 & others in the chain overlapping this year to next.

i Just want apple to start using AMD cpus, laptop and desktops alike, i mean they are already business patterns, Apple already switched to their GPUs.

Well, then don't put toxic messages in toxic threads.

Nowadays, there are not many developers that care about performance! Just look at the programming language charts, you will be surprised why the slowest language ever created (Python) is used a lot.

But then 25 years of programs would break. I doubt most users would be happy with that. One of the reasons IA64/Itanium failed. Also, MS has made changes to keep up with multicore ,eg, scheduler changes over the years & performance like tickless kernel starting with W8, & RAM compression in W10

Python is great for rapid prototyping , Also, security. You wouldn't write your web app in C unless you want it hacked real bad. So there's lots of stuff like web stuff or prototypes that wouldn't really be appropriate to do in a faster language for various reasons. But there are some things which could be better.

Pro Tools & Digital Performer had to be rewritten to run on Windows. Sure there were grumbles. Once the fear & hurt feelings subsided, most adapted to the way of doing things. Then there was the buyout of Logic that had users like me scrambling when Apple coded it to work with their hardware & OS. If Apple were to provide a Windows version again, Logic would have to be recoded at the very least or even totally rewritten.

As far as failures, this happens for many reasons but, chief among them is the unwillingness to go all-in.

Yep and so does Pro Tools. And Waves. These two, every year we hear: they suck, they are dead, who buys those and other hilarious comments. And Coca Cola and Marlboro should be really dead, that is if people were really aware of their own actions. And MS. And games should be written as to run off cpus, not gpus. And i should be dead after all the drug abuse i did in a bygone era but i'm still here lol. I mean others died with far less abuse. So, should 've been dead means nothing when it's here alive and kicking.
And this is not an opinion ? Why so bitter mate. Everyone in this thread has been polite enough imho, therefore toxic would be saying "you have the wrong info but i won't tell you because forum's toxic"...
@quadcore64 quoted your msg when it read "AMD is going ARM" , but now it's Apple ? Which is it lol. Np though because both are sort of generalized assumptions. Apple making a laptop with ARM shouldn't surprise anyone. They already have iPads for 9+ years and these can perform basic laptop tasks and some more advanced anyway.
The AMD powered MS Surface laptop 3 has a Ryzen cpu and NOT ARM. The Surface X tablet cpu developed by MS and Qualcomm is the ARM one and as all reviews show it lacks behind in performance even when compared with the other MS Surface Pro tablets. Personally i don't find this a bold step ahead as most press quoted on reviews, but rather an attempt to capitalize on a newer market of "machines for dummies(?)" who do less for more money hehehe. I don't want to sound nasty here, but this shouldn't be a surprise either, ask a millenial what fdisk and dir stand for and they 'll look at you like you 're an alien, so there you have your target audience.
For me the only important thing here is Apple porting at least some part of their macOS code to support ARM. Unification of iOS and macOS is important if and when it happens. But hold on a sec. I remember vividly like it's now, Steve Jobs introducing iPhone in 2007 with these very words: "iPhone runs OS X" . But it didn't, did it ? And here we are, 12+ years later and we hear Apple is going ARM. They have been there all this time lol. I mean (and correct me if i'm wrong please) how exactly are you planning to make something like this running on ARM cores, that is without embarrassing yourself:
    mac-pro.jpg Cheers :)

@taskforce my bad, i meant Apple was going ARM, and i have been reading about it a lot lately.

But what i want is for apple to star using AMD cpus, better performance and cheaper for consumers, win-win.

    It isn't. You are.

I really hope that Mac will switch to desktop ARM CPUs. But that'd make pointless to switch first to AMD.
But if they finally do it (again, not anytime soon) it would be great, opening the path for a possible future Windows ARM desktop.

But that's assuming ARM will be able and willing to develop high end desktop CPUs. Right now, you see two reviews of the ARM-based Snapdragon for the MSoft ultratablet/minilaptop and they seem to live in two different worlds.

The logic in some of these posts is weird. Why would you want to consider a weak ass architecture like arm for a daw when you could then just go and buy a used 10$ dual core cpu that does the same thing. Hell you could go and buy a used 50$ i3 laptop that will enable you to record some dozen tracks.

Audio software is one of the last survivors when it comes to real-time high-performance CPU programming.
Multicore programming is hard enough, but real-time (meaning manual management of the memory, the absolute king of bugs and errors) is extremely difficult.

The Python usage though is misleading. Many people use it as a "glue" to automate really high performance tasks (AI, compiling,..)

First off I will mention again that I am not a fanboy of any platform, just appreciate technology that works at an affordable & reasonable price.

The following takes what I would use as a 'use case' example when looking to build a high end audio production system. An AMD 3960X & 1080Ti stock, outperforming the Mac Pro 7.

    Threadripper 3960X: VFX Render Monster
