Some of the things he says are correct, some are debatable. For his "18:50 pci-e moment of truth" i strongly disagree. What he shows is indeed true in his case, but why... Clearly his system is badly or not optimized at all for high performance drives, it is obvious that "his" Win 7 doesn't know how to handle the particular drive, so does the DPC latency mon app and so does Cubase 7.5. Now i am NOT a trained computer technician, my fellow partner in the comp builds though, has a Master's degree in Computer Sciences and as i 've mentioned before i have learned a lot from him over the years.
So, the case i'm looking at here is the ssd's driver monopolizes the cpu usage since it takes high priority by being a pci-e device which is directly connected to the cpu interface. And this is a clear system malfunction, it shouldn't be happening. Because this behavior exhibited in his system should virtually apply to any application demanding priority, not just a DAW, therefore rendering the pci-e drive more or less useless in his case.
I can assure you and everyone else, that what he reports there, is untrue to any modern system, even under Win 7 if it's properly optimized. I could even argue that with Win7 you may lose some functionality supported natively by late Win10 builds, but the overall lower system footprint may indeed be a reason for some to stick with it indefinitely. But this is another story really and one we 've discussed extensively in the past.
I recently upgraded a friend's 15" Alienware laptop (6-core i7, last year's model) with a 1tb Samsung 970 EVO Plus. While this guy shows 2 midi channels with obvious hiccups with his obscure(?) laptop, the Alienware did 8 Omnispheres & 8 Falcon channels plus 4 Diva instances while recording vocals with real time monitoring at 2 ms with an RME Fireface UFX+ connected via Thunderbolt, all with the one single Samsung 970 drive under Cubase 10 Pro.
So, what he says at 18:50 was never valid. Not then not now. His observation that the pci-e drive somehow locks the cpu is indeed valid, but he has no clue as to why this happens and how to fix it. Well... he should :D.
Almost all my clients' builds the last two years contain pci-e system drives and believe me when i say i have zero dissatisfied customers. In fact i have customers that have stuck with me for their occasional builds and upgrades for almost 2 decades.
    Cheers :D

Thanks for your answer ! very helpful. I checked, I can mount a Samsung nvme m.2 970 series in my trash can macpro. But I need to use a Sintech adapter
    https://www.amazon.com/Sintech-Adap...me+ssd+adapter+card+upgrade+2013-2015+macbook

I'm a bit scared about overheating because evo has no sink attached, maybe i should buy an Intel but which one ?...based on this :

Nothing to be scared of mate. There are tons of third party m.2 heatsinks that are compatible with all 2280 m.2 ssd cards (like the Samsung 970s) sold in newegg, amazon etc, selling for like 5-15 bucks or so. Pick the one that suits your case and you 're good to go (I guess too tall ones may not fit).
    https://www.newegg.com/p/pl?d=M.2 NVMe Heatsink&Order=PRICE
And actually, if there is some airflow within the case you don't need one at all, nand flash runs better warm. You should consider nominal operational temperature for an ssd from 30-50 Celcius and up to 70 degrees. Now if you fry the damn thing at something like 80+ Celcius, you should know you 've been warned :). But up to 70 celcius (and perhaps 75 too depending on usage) you will have np.

For now I bought a Seagate Barracuda 8TB for €160 during black friday and an EVO 970 NVME 1TB (€189) + Sintech adapter for my 2013 Macpro.
The New 2019 Mac Pro was released yesterday but it's starting at €6499 !!

Almost 2 years passed. Is Barracuda compute 2tb any good for kontakt? My main storage is 500gb 870 evo ssd.

I've heard WD black is fast, but cannot afford it unfortunately.

Yes. But then any HD or SSD is good for Kontakt!
Even a slow 5400 rpm can do it if desperate!
But starting at 7200 rpm is minimum really. 10,000+ rpm is better for spinning drives.
Obviously SSD can respond quicker than all that.
I installed an extra 1TB SSD in my stage laptop for Kontakt stuff, so I get full speed as it's direct to mobo, and plus at home I have a G-Tech 8TB, and some older WD. Like an old WD MyBook 2x2TB, of which one mirrors and backs up the other.
And even some older 5200 rpm WD drives!
    All daisy chained via Firewire!
Oldtime speed, I know, but extremely convenient on a budget as you can daisy chain up to 64 drives with FW! lol
Maybe I'll upgrade one day, but I can create fine. So all is good really.
I don't care I'm missing out on speed if I can still create music.
And my stage rig is rock solid anyway, being SSD.
    Old school.

You can purchase an Ironwolf 8TB for a reasonable price and Seagate's warranty is pretty good. KONTAKT is a library, so unless your entire day is spent using Kontakt libraries, you do not need a large super-fast SSD(expensive) or 10,000+rpm HDD. The Ironwolf is 7200rpm which is fast enough and works great stand-alone and in a NAS array. If you look at technological advancements, Terabytes will be old news in ten years, it will be in Petabytes for desktop. It already is in some RAID Data servers.
They even make a 100TB SSD if you have $40,000 (somewhere in that vicinity - The Nimbus Exadrive)

 Kontakt is a sample player.
And thank you for echoing my words regards drives.

I just realised I had only clicked respond to the thread header - and saw that afterwards.... Yes it is a sample player that has massive sample libraries at its disposal. Reinforcement is a good thing anyway. It means they're getting decent information. :) :like:

    Oh totally, I agree.
As I said, first thing, the drive doesn't have to be anything special for Kontakt at all.
Considering I started off with a 5400 rpm WD.
And made it into the top 20!
So it doesn't matter at all to me.
I mean, I still use FW! lol
    From 2019. lol

If I am still alive in ten years (misspent youth) and this site is still going, our specs will be considered ancient

Tbh, mine is ancient already! haha.
Doesn't effect my production really though.

USB 2 is still not phased out so you're far from ancient yet considering the comparison to Firewire which handles more data and in bigger chunks than USB 2. (480mbps vs 800mbps) so you are nowhere near ancient with FW. :)

Aww, I feel happier now! Never wanted to admit I'm probably way behind most of the young 'uns that have recently invested in computer hardware!
But FW has been bloomin' convenient, I must say.
When I get to 20% free, I just buy a new drive and add it to the chain! And carry on with my Kontakt lib collection that started around 2006 I think.
I think it was thanks to the Audiobro releases not long ago which made my buy another drive! haha.
Btw, did Zappa say exactly that in your sig?
The "it" after the word "money"...? :winker:

Yes to the Zappa quote - I double-checked by watching the actual interview (you can find it on youtube).

    Ah, okay.
Well then I feel there should at least be a comma after "money"?
Still reads wrong though, doesn't it.
I've said before, I 3rd stage proof-mark GCSE English exams for extra work.

At an academic level no argument. When you hear him say it and read it without a comma or any punctuation, it reads how he said it.
