    Hi all.

I happened to stumble upon this site:
    http://ubuntustudio.org/
    nfo:
"Ubuntu Studio. A multimedia creation flavor of Ubuntu.
Ubuntu Studio is aimed at the GNU/Linux audio, video and graphic enthusiast as well as professional.
We provide a suite of the best open-source applications available for multimedia creation. Completely free to use, modify and redistribute. Your only limitation is your imagination."

You can, actually, run windows native vst
    http://breakfastquay.com/dssi-vst/

it seems there´s a bunch of free vst development around
    http://linuxaudio.org/

    Looks pretty impressive!
I have known for a couple of years that ubunto distro is pretty stable. It really makes me try!

    Have anyone tryed yet?
    Check it out and comment.

    Regards!

I know ... windows really makes me sick ... they think my computer have unlimited resources ... lol

I have been investigating another linux projects and it seems to me that they are quite advanced... check this one out:

    http://www.bandshed.net/AVLinux.html
    nfo:
"The engine of AV Linux is a customized i686 2.6.39.1 Linux Kernel featuring many performance and tuning enhancements to effectively maximize operating effiency. The most notable feature is the IRQ threading and rtirq-init functions of the Kernel being activated dy default which creates an optimal low latency audio production environment. For those with newer computers using more than 4GB of RAM an optional custom PAE post-install Kernel is also available."

This kernel part, is what impress me the most. Why, you might ask... well, you can´t modify your windows kernel to make your computer boot faster, rip services you don´t really need, etc, all to have a better performance... besides, no virus, no legal stuff... just you and your music... and audioz.info ... LOL

I really need to check those projects

    Share your knowledge!

Hi there SAiNT! Hackintosh ... yea, I have read several articles about those setups. Some conclude the systems are pretty stable. Some say it don´t really worth it, since there is a bios hack involved, wich in turn, in a high demand enviroment (as a music / video production) might get unstable. Who knows! But, don´t let my argument stop you, please if you try, let us know what parts you buy and process you follow!

Actually, in some time from now, I will be changing my setup, I guess Intel is the way to go, maybe a thread discussing different specs is a good idea... lets put some info for the community and actually follow it... we´ll see what happen then! By the way, have you tryed "lite" windows version?

    Regards!

unfortunately, with Windows, you can't just disable everything that you don't need... you still must leave a lot of crap in order for system to work properly

Interesting device! Tnx for your input!

This is, actually, the best example to why get linux. (I am not into buying mode LOL)
"Receptor doesn't even do Windows. Instead, it runs a custom-built version of Linux. which Muse Research has created to provide the lowest possible latencies coupled with the most efficient processor usage."

Actually, they are saying, how to make your dream DAW:
1.- Dedicated hardware/OS (just for audio production)
"Receptor is completely open-ended—running many industry standard VST instruments and effects in a dedicated hardware host"
"your laptop is wasting CPU cycles doing non-musical things."

2.- Use linux OS, and chop it and tweak it until you get the smaller/efficient image, just for audio production.
"Windows might be a good general purpose operating system, but Receptor is a musical instrument, not a general purpose machine. So, even though Receptor runs those same plugins that your computer runs, it runs them better and faster than a PC"

3.- VST: They are using "open software" to run plungins (not propietary), since the community efforts are focused on windows versions.
"Receptor will not run Macintosh plugins directly"

4.- One just need to read the linux community forums to get the apropiate hardware or to tweak your own.
"you could assemble a collection of third-party hardware, interfaces, cables, and software and build a device that resembled a Receptor -- sort of"
"the tweaked-to-perfection reliability, the tight MIDI integration, the UniWire integration, and the custom operating system created specifically for running VST plug-ins".

5.- This is doable, though they trying to sell their fine aparatus, as it was the Linux community effort that made this company create the product.
The fact that there's a computer inside is just a small part of the equation. There's also a computer in your cell phone and one in your MP3 player—but that doesn't mean you'd rather use a Dell than your Nokia cellphone or Apple iPod. Receptor has taken a large number of components and integrated them into a coherent system, which was then optimized to run audio plug-in software. It is far more than a motherboard in a box."

    Regards

I'd love to delete my W7 partition, but my problem isn't with the software options, it's the hardware support.

Most of the manufacturers see Linux as a fringe OS and maybe it is, but maybe that'd change if more hardware companies would at least allow their hardware to be adapted by the Linux community by sharing the information those talented enough to make use of would need. The hardware I have now, is what I'm going to have for the foreseeable future and likely far beyond that. There is some Firewire support, but not for my interface.

I just think it's funny when I hear or read people talk about their audio workstations and they're playing games on it and checking their mail and whatnot. Why does an audio workstation even need to be connected to the internet? I know everyone can't have a dedicated computer for audio, but a trimmed down no nonsense audio workstation based on Linux seems like the ideal solution to me. But I guess as computers become faster and faster, dedicated workstations become unnecessary. With multiprocessors not even breaking a sweat with malware and whatever protections needed running while emails are being received in the background while numerous high bit-rate tracks are being recorded all at the same time. The Linux audio workstation had a chance to catch on I guess, but that time may have already passed.

Ubuntu Studio huh? Gonna go download it then But what's the difference between Ubuntu Studio and the regular Ubuntu besides the included software? Will I lose out on anything (from regular Ubuntu) if I just stick with Ubuntu Studio?

Take a look at this, as it comes already tuned to the kernel to realtime audio and stuff, plus it's got the Ubuntu Studio range of software PLUS 3rd music and video app repos.

    http://www.bandshed.net/avlinux/

I've tried it all Linux audio wise, Ubuntu studio including, and IMHO nothing beats Glen's work, it's a one man project, not a full blown distro make it count. It comes as a live dvd also, you can burn it to a USB stick, and boot from it.... and if you like, install it, or if you already have a Linux partition, just custom add it to 40_custom grub file and ISO boot it directly from your already partitioned hard drive.
