today i lost my 10 year collected library, after i have tried to put my external hard drive in my pc, i kicked the hdd against the pc case, first the hdd was not readed in Win7, it asked to format it,
    the hdd beep and click

    after watching and trying this,

now it dont shown up in windows

    what to do now ?
have read a professional hhd repair cost 90 to 1800$,
if the case is manipulated ,damaged or opened by a amateur it s more expensive

I do not want to add to the misery of the problem, but only to say use this as motivation to buy extra hard drives and backup regularly.
I back up my OS disk frequently not because I can't get Win10 again, but because my time and effort is in the setup.
Even worse if i lose my archives / libraries. So I keep the libraries in archive form and back up my archives, but also back up my Library disks to save the process of rebuilding.
It takes little time to backup an OS disk with 83 Gig (45 in backup format), and 5 TB archive and 5 TB Library is a longer process, but all I have to do is start it and spot check occasionally.
With hard drives cheaper now, many can afford the cost, if they will afford some time.

This is why you should make backup of your important stuff. Next time buy an extra HDD just for backups.

Don't plug the drive back in now, take it to a professional, if i'm right this isn't a very bad problem only some parts that are easily changed are damaged.

the more you keep your disk plugged in, the more chance you either gonna lose the data, or it's gonna be more expansive.

good luck because i know exactly what kind a place you're in right now.

Sincere sympathy, pal; that's one of the worst feelings a man can experience. I hope you're able to recover everything.

I'm so paranoid about data loss that I archive and catalog everything on DVDs.

for me it is useless to say "you had to backup" would make me even more frustrated
start again, take this opportunity to do cleaning and use what you really need

If you have a clean environment somewhere, you could try buying the same hdd again,
disassemble the broken drive and the new one and replace the new platters with the old ones.

Professionals often do it the same way but you really need a very clean environment.

Before you decide to send it to a professional, please read reviews and critiques about these
professional companies. Most of them charge way too much and alot of these (nowdays) are
just scam and often aren't even able to fix your hdd... but they still take your money for the efforts.

And for your next drive, consider buying an SSD - you can throw that through the room and it still works.

    Good luck!

Drives suck to recover. I spent good part of 24hrs once recovering with this supposed awesome recovery blah blah
    $50 and hours wasted.
Even if you get some of it back a lot of it is going to be in piece. Curropt. its a HUGE bummer bro.
PM ME and ill get you into my google drive we'll get ya hooked up again... no where near what it was of course. but something better then fishing again

Drives of any kind will fail, be they mechanical or SSD - it's just a question of when.
The only way you can protect yourself is by keeping a backup.
If it's important, back it up. If it's not backed up, then it's not important.
I don't mean to sound callous - I know that can't help you now - but hopefully it can save you or others in your situation from future heartbreak.

If it's samples, plugins or libraries - those can be replaced fairly easily.
If it's stuff you've recorded or something equally valuable and you don't have another copy of I'd recommend taking the drive to a professional data recovery company - which will be expensive - but the more you do with the drive in it's current state the less likely successful recovery becomes.
Don't bother with software recovery - if the drive is clicking your best bet is a recovery company that will remove the platters in a clean room environment (i.e. cleaner than an operating theatre) to extract the data. Anything else will just waste your time and money.
    All the best

    Hey, I'm sorry for you.

Man, that should have been the very last attempt to repair the drive.
You need a clean(est) room with controlled airflow and all people inside wearing protective clothing included head and hands prior to opening. If dandruff falls from skin onto the platter, after restarting the drive chances are good to kill the the r/w head this way.
The head is flying on a very, very tiny gap above the platter surface at speeds near or above 10.0000 rpm.

I once had a dying drive with precious data with this ticking sound. What I did was cooling it down in the fridge to ~ 10 degree Celsius. That way I was able to operate the drive until it got too warm again. I copied data from the disk to a spare drive. It took me some hours but in the end I saved all data on the drive. But I fear that won't help at this stage.

In your case - after the disassembly - I think the only way is a professional data recovery service. But as said before, be careful to choose a real pro. They will disassemble the platters, clean their surface and reinstall them into the drive or a nother one of the same type. But it will cost some $$

    Sorry to hear that... :(

For anyone interested, there is a good option for VERY LONG data archiving.:guru:

I don't know whether or not you know this, but as long as you haven't formatted the drive, merely putting it back in it's external caddy will bring all your files back!

It's just a case of drives (usually OVER 4TB) have a problem being read in ANY change of environment. Even one caddy to a different one.

I recently had a drive fail. I couldn't transfer anything off of it at all. Tried some software repair options and still no good but before losing all hope I popped it into an Orico 2 bay drive chassis and flipped to dupe mode. In like 5 minutes the entire drive was transferred to the other drive without any damaged or corrupt files. that 2 bay was the best $30 I've spent.
