well, Reaper vs. any other DAW is like Internet vs cable TV - it's like stepping up to entirely new world which by default is tricky to figure out, but leap ahead of competition

Mate, you 're taking things too seriously, it was obviously a joke :)
As for the ProTools and Avid's policy, i 'm all with you but explain how is it that Avid's PT and its hardware "accessories" have an annual revenue which is more than all other companies combined.

Wrong, having used almost all (proper non bedroom dj) DAWs, I can confidently say Pro Tools HD 12+ is the best DAW. If you don't agree you've:

    A. Never used it (properly)
    B. Used an old version of PT and mad a judgement call on outdated software
    C. Barely use audio or real instruments and would be just as good using bars and pipes on an amiga ;)

Real musicians and mixers prefer Pro Tools not just because it's the standard but why it is, it's the most well thought out and powerful DAW in balance with all that's needed to EDIT audio and MIX audio.

If you prefer heavy midi, looping, EDM etc then it won't be right for you but it's still the best DIGITAL AUDIO WORKSTATION (clue in the words Digital Audio). Nothing touches it for editing, Nothing touches it for mixing, nothing touches it for the hardware you can pair with it (Mix consoles like Icon D-Command and S6 < seriously mix on one of those bad boys and get back to me with your silly Faderport 16 junk toy with Studio One... I used to use S1 v3/v4 so I know this first hand). S1 was meant to be the new 'best' DAW but all it does is slicken up some mundane aspects that are non issues in PT anyway (when you know key short cuts) and is woeful for mixing and editing, logic is bad for mixing and editing, cubase is convoluted/bloated and bad for mixing, the rest inc reaper I can't even take seriously (either dumbed down too much or overly idiosyncratic and quirky like Reaper).

So, nice sentiment OP but yes there is a best DAW , it's Pro Tools and has been for decades and probably always will be based on the 'best' new contender (Studio One) falling so short on actual mixing smarts, hardware support and even the messy GUI.

PT's also looks the best, yeah serious, the waveform drawing, the colour choices and the sharp gfx vs the new flat dark vector style of basically every other DAW that can't stand up to professional 16 hour day's staring at... there's a reason pros use Pro Tools but could use anything, and it's nothing to do with 'because everyone uses it' or 'don't want to learn another DAW', we've all tried most DAWs and PT is where it's at. Still. Logic and Cubase are jokes, S1 is a mess with some occasionally useful new workflow that really doesn't matter anyway vs the power of PT, key modifiers, session data etc which does all that and more.

PT from 12.5 onwards is no longer 'outdated' either, they took time to implement things from other DAWs but when they did it, they did it best, hands down. From the way it handles bouncing, to track freezing, to committing, to even the use of plug-ins and the overview you get in the brilliant edit screen (literally the only window most PT users ever need as it shows and does everything).

Mixing on a 24 fader D-Command with PT12/2018 HD/Ultimate and the rapid/solid/well thought out editing and powerful handling of tracks (nothing gets in your way by being dumbed down in PT but isn't too complicated to hold you up either) means nothing touches it. As a pure sequencer (MIDI) sure there's better out there, but it does midi fine anyway, enough for most audio/real musicians.

    sorry, I have to disagree,
    1) recording stops/fails when ANY problem happens, on the other hand for ex. Reaper keeps recording because if that's a live 4-8 hour long live session, nobody cares about one hiccup/dropout IF whole recording is reliably saved (!)
    2) DAW fails to open if for any reason it doesn't correctly check license - we are in 21st century and still need to have a hardware dongle plugged ALL THE TIME or be online ALL THE TIME when professionally working on audio (!)
    3) more than 32 physical inputs on the non-AVID interface and PT just crashes, the end. LOL.
    4) more than 32 physical inputs for AVID = HDX which is PCIexpress, BUT no (AVID) Thunderbolt solution. LOL.
    5) paying every year or month to get almost no updates or bugfixes
    6) AVID VENUE Link doesn't work (PT 12+)
I could go futher and further, but it's pointless, there's already tons of these threads all over AVID forums...

I am not saying PT is a bad DAW, actually there are most things done right, for ex. automation accuracy is one of best among all DAWs,
but the artificial limitation which I call AVID FUCKERY is pissing off more and more people and the only reason PT is still used is shady deal among educational institutions and also long-term legacy studios, which in fact are often running PT 10 or even older versions, with all the digidesign and dpm stuff rolling

I can only contradict that. Well, maybe you prefer Pro Tools. I dont do this. I've been working with Pro Tools for years and still do it ... because I have to. but whenever possible - if I do not have to record more than 64 audio channels at the same time or get a PT project file shared - I would prefer Reaper. What you put on the table are just preferences. Preferences for workflow and preferences for device groups. Everyone has their own preferences so please ... please stop talking such a nonsense. thanks

IMO...You can name a million features of any product but it does not make it the best. In most cases the majority of people never use 100% of the features in any DAW and those that do are just the very small percentage that do. None the less if you exclude a category such as MIDI then it should not be included in the conversation. Every Major DAW "Digital Audio Workstation" uses MIDI and must be respected and included in every conversation when it comes to overall use. It is perfectly fine to have a favorite but know where to draw the line. My 25+ years in the business professionally has led me down many roads and that include equipment to DAWS. I have Logic, PT and Cubase10 in my studios and at home I use Cubase10. I find my preference is Cubase and it is THE BEST FOR ME and what MY GOALS are in producing and recording, I find it to be very well rounded and even it falls short in a few categories which most people can care less about in most cases but its still great.

    A. Never used it (properly).....Is only a assumption because I am highly trained and skilled in PT although I know you are not pointing anyone out but is insulting to those who do know how to use it (properly) but do not share your views.
    B. Used an old version of PT and mad a judgement call on outdated software......Should not be included in this convo. Keeping up is a must in order to compare.
    C. Barely use audio or real instruments and would be just as good using bars and pipes on an amiga ;).....I do plenty of but you might have a point here because experience matters when giving a opinion.

Conclusion:I have my views on most DAWS as well but I also know people who absolutely love each one and produce AMAZING pieces of art. When pointing out something is THE BEST, you all do realize that it is still just opinion whether popular or not....right?

Yo guys for what it's worth, I love reading threads like these if they're in good spirits. I have honestly learned so much from reading other people's opinions, that I think comparison threads are really good resource for beginners. I just don't like the fighting over it when people take it way too personally, as if it's "my wife is hotter than yours and objectively the hottest on the planet". Any software that could objectively be trash can still be deeply loved by someone for reasons that are completely mundane to you. Anyway what I wanted to say, don't let whiners keep you from sharing your thoughts in threads like these! There are people out there who love reading what you have to say while you do it in a respectful manner.

foster911 convinced me that sex sells. So, in 1981, I got my first ZX-81 workstation DAW and got down (to work). You can see it right there on my dressing table when I was but a young and innocent "bedroom producer".

The intervening years have been good. Today, I am Mylie Kinogue!
