Is there a plugin that keeps the output at the same level consistently? If I apply distortion/compression or whatever to a sound, I often think i like it better, just because it's louder. I think a plugin that would always keep the output the same would be helpful to judge if an applied effect really benefits the signal and avoid just liking it cause it made things louder.

 

Some plugins have a compensation option, and know internally what they are doing to the signal, so they may work well...but....
It seems you want something that will compare channel input and output and some combination of peak and RMS compensation, to compensate for perhaps a chain of other effects, since those effects will alter various things...
It would be nice if it had internal routing so only take up one FX slot, too...
I know there are some multi-FX racks like Blue Cat's Patchwork...
And many plugins will communicate between each other these days...
Now I am very curious to see suggestions...

AB_LM looks like a good one:

"Mode & Link Channel
Sets the mode of the plugin, either Sender or Receiver and the link channel for the communication.
Sender is placed before the plugin(s) which should be AB level matched, Receiver is inserted after.
Use the "L"-button (auto) to quickly set next highest (free) sender/receiver channel.
In addition AB_LM makes suggestions for channel auto link, which may work depending on DAW/plug-in type."

I have this and will now use it to see (hear) what the hell I am doing!

 

Just stumbled upon this compressor plugin from sound radix. Have a look into the video. The auto gain function seems to be pretty great as the other functions too.
But with AB_LM one will can use that function with every compressor there is

 

buffer size is the main problem in having limiter on the output , you can always keep switching buffer size to your comfort ,but if you want solution, hardware limiter is one , and in the box solution is using 2 sound card connected digitally to each-other , one set to the lowest 64 buffer size and the main can be set to highest 1024 depends on the sound card , its a bit tricky solution but if the daw set to high buffer size 1024 , mixing editing loading instrument is breeze , the other sound card 64 buffer can be use for low latency demand like limiter mastering chain , and low latency tracking with processed sound , the only problem in this is vst instrument synth real time playing require to lower the buffer size in your daw ,or record it audio from using the other sound card, this solution is not for everybody, but its worth checking it out if it help.
