    I own a HD600 with schiit magni 3 amp.
It sounds great, I feels like using no headphone while using them, soo smooth and clear.

    Sennheiser HD650 + Sonarworks calibration.
Personalized, which means that I bought my headphones @ Sonarworks, resulting in best possible reference.
You can choose a lot of different models (Sennheiser and Beyerdynamic are most well known I think) but the difference with or without calibration is very noticable so definitely something to consider.

Wow thanks for the insight, before reading your post I never even heard of headphone calibration or Sonarworks before. Did a quick google search and the information I learned was very useful!

I’ve been wondering about this as well. Can anyone make some recommendations about some good, high end-ish headphones that will allow me to make informed choices regarding the low end frequencies? I’ve got 5” monitors and I do quite a lot of trial and error- and still fuck it up half the time. I have ath-m50’s and a pair of akg’s, the model of which I can’t remember. Might be k240 mkII or something like that

I’ve been wondering if some pricier headphones would be a worthwhile investment since I can’t afford high end monitors

The first rule of mixing and mastering club is: You do not use headphones.
The second rule of mixing and mastering club is: You do not use headphones.
Third rule of mixing and mastering club: If Someone yells "Stop! dont use headphones!", goes limp, taps out, you use decent speakers.

    Some excellent/pro/audiophile/reference/studio headphones:

Beyerdynamic (DT Pro 770 250 Ohm are super fine and ultra cheap, other DT Pro headphones)
Sennheiser HD (600, 650, 800, maybe couple of other models)
    Grado (PS1000, for example, others)
    Focal Spirit Pro
    Audeze LCD-X and other Audeze
Audio Technica ATH-R70x, maybe something other

These models are popular and highly recommended among some famous and top mastering engineers, mixing engineers, audiophiles, plugin developers (Fabien from Tokyo Dawn Labs aka TDR), recording engineers, sound producers.
This list is not full, some example you can find on gearslutz as well, but my wish-list is recommended. I have DT770 Pro 250 Ohm by Beyerdynamic, and I like this model too much.
You can add some AKG headphones as well, not so bad, but pricey and not super top-notch, just as an almost pro extra) if you buy 2 or 3 models from my list, AKGs are good extra, or even you don't need these AKGs...
Posted above models by other forummates are excellent as well.

I use these every now and then and they hold up well when I cross reference them with the main monitors

    Sony MDR-Z1R
