Read the OP, he is thinking of buying a 3200XL that comes with an extra EB16 board, and and extra filter board. I've owned various Akais, so I know the specs. I am saying, that once he's sold the 2 extra boards that come with it, he would have only paid 200 for the 3200XL, which is the same price as the 3000XL, and if you had the choice to buy either for 200, you're gonna go for the 3200XL.

But in the case where you pick something apart like that you kinda have to know what you're doing, no? Would someone that's completely green with hardware be able to? I'm not implying the OP can't, I'm just wondering that about myself..

    Not so.

If you owned several AKAIS then you should know the there is NOT such a thing as an "extra EB16 board" nor an "extra filter board" on ANY S3200XL. Those are included as standard features on that model. In other words, every S3200Xl comes with them. Those are EXTRA OPTIONS on the S3000XL. Moreover, you can't add any extra EB16 or ib30f filters to the S3200XL. Indeed, you can't even remove the ib30f filter. It is embedded on the mainboard. There has been a lot of misinformation on this thread, and we are only on its second page.

you want 12 bit man... Id save your money and not just get any akai... trust me, I wanted to do same thiing, just so I could play the "Hardware game"... but, I'd rather save money and get an Akai with 12 bit s-rate... yeah s950.. or go for an emu... not sure what genre your into.

if just hip hop, or if you are into drum n bass too?..

If I was buying for hip hop, Id go s950... if buying for DnB, id go emu... in end i go for both :D

Those are on another price range. The S950 is going to run you at least $700 and the Emu are going for $3000 und up. Even the clones are selling for over $1000.

this has its source from seller description post...seller has tricky labeled post..
you must kno you shit cause sellers can trick a bit..not so bad rip off tricks but thats vintage gear...

eg when you say thats akai is fully expanded to 4 m dat or so...does not mean fully mb...it does mean that all slots are plugged with 4 *2 mb

Exactly right. That plus some misinformation here can lead to a costly decision.

I'd say if you're getting into hardware as a musician, it's a useful hobby to have :)

Now I fully understand why scsi2sd is better than gotek, You don't have problems with ram, very slowly loading etc. but Gotek has beautiful red digits

I know you can't be serious. Never chose looks over performance. Hammers were invented for slow hardware. :trashing:My Emulator has survived because I barely use it. It was slow 25 years ago when things were not this fast. Now it feels 100 slower. If you like red digits buy a $1.99 digital clock.

This is very creative idea. Even better than gotek. I imagined S3200XL With scsi2sd instead of floppy and digital clock instead of hdd. After this modification You be able to set alarm for eating or sleep on Your Akai

I have a question.. How do the functions of internal RAM, floppy drives, sd cards and external hard drives differ? They all expand the memory so you can store more sounds, right? Is the amount of internal RAM relevant then?

I would only recommend using these samplers as DACS, rather than fiddling around with the small screens and cumbersome storage. It's not worth build a library on them nowadays imo.

Very. Just like in a computer. RAM is used for temporarily storing samples, sequences and songs for quick access. The SD, floppy, HD, etc. allows you to backup or save your samples, sequences and songs from the RAM which would otherwise be lost when you turn it off. One thing that has not been mentioned is that a top S3200XL would have 32Mb sample RAM PLUS 16Mb ROM samples in two additional 8MB flash rom boards called the FMX-008, FMC-01 and FMC-02. The ROM is used to write your own samples and sequences, songs and access them like any other storage medium but faster.

Like for example during live performances? That means you would have all the sounds you need for the entire set on SD/HD/floppy and load sounds you want to use for each song into the RAM before every song? That does seem like the amount of RAM limits a lot of what you can do..
Are there any benefits of 3000/3200 over 5000/6000? Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't all of those already "transparent" sounding hi-fi samplers?
