The truth is you are deluded by that analysis plugins by only considering the shape of curve of EQ! What that eq does might be beyond that! What really happens to the signal might be slight harmonic manipulation at certain frequency ranges and lots of other factors like adding non-linearity. You never know what's happening in the black box and what you see in the analysis tool might be able to reverse engineer just part of the operation transpiring in the black box not all of it!

If you need to ask this on random internet forums, you're probably chasing tons of stuff that you don't need. Pick one EQ and learn it. If you can't decide if something is good or bad, there's either no difference or you can't tell. In both cases you should revert to the things you know and stop wasting your time chasing shiny new toys. Pultec magic, like any other "magic" hardware or software, is not really magic. It's just nice little things like ease of use or a tiny bit of a nicer sound for one specific purpose and not so nice for other purposes. If you're looking for magic that will make you sound better, look elsewhere. Look at learning how to record and mix properly first, since you'll never find the magic you're looking for otherwise.

    Well said

We all know the only real magic is uncracked plugin magic anyway. For as long as something remains off the sister site it automatically gets a 50% sonic upgrade and record labels give you a special meeting if they find out you used extra special uncrackable software:rofl:

Pultecs (real ones, not plugins) are used for several reasons. One is the "musicality" of them. The ability to do large boosts or cuts without serious adverse effect.
Also there is the low end resonant curve (Pultec bass trick) that it does well which will add weight to the low end without muddying it up. (Compare to Bark of the Dog and Voice of God plugins which essentially do the same thing)
And additionally, they do add some harmonic "sparkle" to certain signals due to the transformers and other things in the signal path.
If you are looking for a free one to try the boost/cut trick, get Acustica's Titanium Basstard. You can boost/cut the 20, 30, 60 or 100Hz areas with it. It's a sampling of a Pultec clone. I think Acustica's offerings get you closer to the "magic" that the emu's miss. This is just my opinion.
I actually use Acustica's Purple which has some actual Pultec samplings as well as hot rodded clones.

I've measured and testet a bunch of soft pultecs. And sorry, I can't make any use of them. I mean, why should I use a low shelf that raises 1000Hz when I dial in 60Hz??? Why should I use mid bands that can only emphasise or only attenuate??? I see no sense in that. They even don't have a high shelf.
Ok, the added harmonics can be useful, no doubt, but there are tons of pure saturation plugins, which let me dial in the amount of saturation and differ vastly in their harmonic composition which gives me way more possibilities to shape a sound.

Here is the Pultec magic example with the drastic push pull trick at 100hz:

You can also do the standard eq boost/attenuate for the broad curve and as No Avenger mentioned it does have a long curve that affects a lot further then the targeted frequency, the Q peak is at target frequency but drops gradually over a long distance to give sounds a subtle facelift or tummytuck as opposed to the method in standard eq's.

When you boost and attenuate the same frequencie the curves differ slightly which can keep the target frequencie more punctual while the attenuation overlaps below that point in a special way for lack of words.

    Horses for courses.

I personally like the work flow of pultec style EQs out of all other emulations. Its just great for broad strokes.

If I had to pick 3 eqs to use for the rest of my life it would be S1s stock Fat Channel, Pro-Q 3, and Softube Tubetech Channel.

What ever you do DO NOT use the Nomad factory pultec, that one flips the phase of bands the more gain you add.

To be honest, I do not think this is a valid argument. Why should I cut at 25Hz if I begin to lower frequencies at ~60Hz and effectively cut at ~5Hz? :dunno:

    Nice tune mate.

I take it as a challenge. Here's no Pultec pseudo magic :winker:, 'cause here is no Pultec. Just 3rd party saturation and ReaEQ.
Compare it in a blind test.

Err, sorry, but this is not a Pultec style eq. It has an additional attenuation knob for the low shelf, that's right, but the low shelf's slope is much to steep, Pultec don't have dynamic mid bands and no high shelf. Additionaly Pultecs do come with some saturation Klevgrand's GotoEQ does not, it's a purely digital eq and Snake Oil guy just didn't get it.

I made some measurements myself with Plugindoctor which only purpose is measuring (means, I trust it more than FF's matching thingy)
