The idea was not that it is a engineering test or a quick stress test. It's a regular guy building a system & testing it with one of the DAWs mentioned &, one of the CPUs mentioned. With tweaks to the Bios & OS settings, the system shown could run a lot smoother.

Windows, especially Windows 10 requires fine tuning to your hardware. Intel or AMD.

I still have an old Dell N5010 (M370 4 core cpu, 4 gig memory, Intel graphics) that I use to test new software & plugins to see how well they perform.
If I can get through a normal mix, than I install on my main system.

My next experiment will be using another computer that I am swapping out for my daughter. It has a Core i3 530/2.93GHz.
The plan is to swap it out with a new (retail) Xeon X3440 2.53GHz Quad-Core. The performance is closer to an Core i7 in the same
    release period.

Interested to see how far I can push the system before install a 500GB SSD.

A lot of Intel Fanboys here lol.

Whatever, I even had for many years a Intel System, yes they are good.
With my new AMD Setup I don't see any difference in compability.
Plugins all load flawless with the new 3rd Gen Ryzen.

All those Benchmarks with 1st Gen Ryzen is not comparable anymore.

The new AMD CPU's have a tremendous high IPC Rate, as high as Intel ones, and even the SingleCore Perfomance is now finally as good as Intel ones.

They really did there Homework, finally.

So it's actually now a FacetoFace comparison, the only decision you have to make is the amount of your budget you wanna invest.

Does it make a big difference ? I also think about overclocking my 4770k and wonder if it is worth

so you must be a reaper user since this is the only DAW which is able to mutlthread proper....
i only kno a awesom single thread performance is dope in ableton...

    I have honestly no idea, but it took me couple seconds to set up in BIOS, and my hackintosh is rock-solid stable, so I don't see a reason to go back from 4.3GHz to 3.3GHz;
you can run some benchmark, then overclock and benchmark again, and if result isn't noticeably better, feel free to revert back

I think that AMD cpu was mostly stressed by the bad S1 cpu optimization, meaning its one of the worst daws for hardware testing.

That Xeon should indeed work better with your daw.

    440$ for a ryzen 3700x ? And 895$ for an 3900x?!? . Wow, that's expensive! Europe 350 € a ryzen 3700x (I7 9700k 378€) and 529€ for a 3900x (I9 9900k 488 €)

yeah depends on the seller same as in Europe. I was just referring to the list posted earlier. Anyways I would anytime choose a Intel CPU over a AMD only for the reason that it is easier to Hackintosh.

Well in my Country the 3700X costs 349€ .. and the equivalent which is the 9700K from Intel costs 399€.

But beside that we have to consider that Intels CPU's 9700k, 9900k are nearly over a year old .. so it's actually "old" hardware if you compare it to 3rd Gen Ryzen .. so buying a new CPU in 2019 (which is OP's reason) would make sense to buy a CPU which is pretty new ..

Another reason for me was the reduced energy consumption .. the 3700x is running in idle at about 33° .. so my Dark Rock Pro 4 Cooler is not even running .. I'm not hearing fan coolers (even X570 Mobo Fan is not running). When I used the 9700k (im still using it now in another room) was about 15°Degrees warmer in idle. So basically -> less energy - less temperature -> less noise. That was the finally decision that I switch the systems and now I'm doing my realtime recordings with that AMD System.

ASRocks new X570 have even Thunderbolt 3 Headers .. I'm already excited so see some UAD Action on AMD Systems .. (TB3 not USB)

    Regards guys!

I always had ASUS mobos, and actually what I usually do is I leave everything on some sort of "Auto", and only set "Manual" core clock ratios, set same for all cores, and type the desired number (for ex. 43 instead of 33 etc..), nothing else, no voltage adjustments and so on...

I do have Intel for that reason, but I've seen some people recently running Ryzen-based hackintosh rigs just fine, so perhaps it's doable on AMD now too, with some additional quirks

Have a look here for what a company that builds Pro Production computers is doing theses days.
They were at one time strictly Intel CPU focused.

Since processing in DAWs is mostly serial instead of parallel, you need a CPU with great SINGLE core performance so Intel is the way to go. More cores don't mean more performance because if one of the cores takes too long to do a job all the other cores will just idle until it is done. An older i7 8700k is going to be more than enough with out breaking the bank. Going for anything higher end would require a lot more money to be spent for a small increase in DAW performance.

For some audio workloads the 8700k is better and for other the 9700k is

I prefer the 9700k, it is a bit less vulnerable than the 8700k, the AMD is even a lot less vulnerable.

The Ryzen 3000 is very tempting...

Ryzen 3700x + MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX is a hell of a combo!
Very fast and not expensive, the MAX is the updated model with bigger BIOS chip.

I agree but if you only intend on doing music production, it's not a great choice. If you're also going to use your pc for other productivity tasks like animation for example AMD is the way to go, but there WILL be compromises in music production.

I'm going to test out Studio one on a ZBook studio with an i9 processor tomorrow to see it if can replace my Xeon desktop. Hopefully I can chuck the desktop on Ebay for a few hundred £ to buy me some studio gear

Well not anymore .. check Benchmarks .. Singlecore Performance is now nearly as fast as Intel ..
It's now just like back in the days with Athlon 64 Prozessors .. where a 3500+ (2,2Ghz) was as fast as a Intel 3,5 Ghz Prozessor.

We got now exactly the same situation .. it's again now a great competition .. good for us, good for the prices.

Audio PC's always were Intel configured because of Thunderbolt 3 support .. but now that the new X570 Mobos also got support because of USB4 (TB3 will be implemented, yay) AMD is always a way to go .. and Plugin manufacturers will consider to support AMD as well ..

    Let's see ..
