Katy Perry ‘Dark Horse’ copied Christian rap song, court finds

Discussion in 'Industry News' started by Fudsey Plange, Jul 30, 2019.

  1. "A jury has ruled that Katy Perry’s track “Dark Horse” copied a Christian rap song.

"The pop singer was sued five years ago by Marcus Gray – professionally known as Flame – and two co-writers who claimed her 2013 hit was stolen from his and Lecrae’s song “Joyful Noise”, which was released in 2008.

"After a week long trial, nine jurors determined that the track directly copied the underlying beat of Gray’s rap song despite both Perry and producer Dr Luke insisting they’d never heard it as they don’t listen to Christian music."

They line up because they changed the tempo and key to match, its a basic 808 beat and the "melody" is pretty basic (and like i said, a different key)

But changing a key wouldn't make them line up spot on like that no? 808's wouldn't even line up unless they both used the same Cymatics loopkit.

I was asking the question and posting some evidence for debate but not thinking it was worth a negative rating. Anyway I thought it was poor form for a Christian to sue anyone... This case just struck me as comical on so many levels

I honestly feel bad for Katy Perry and her Producer.
it purely a money game. These dudes ive NEVER heard of. They just so happened to come up with same melody .. happens all the time.
Damn.. Country writers watch out.... ooo drummer.. no more 4 on the floor. better make it 3 and 17/18ths on the floor to avoid someone owning your stuff. lol very silly

After digging into it a bit more it seems to be a money play masked with a religious statement... I just heard the Flame track on its own and realized the only thing lining up in my previous vid was tempo match in serato...

Go ahead an Flame me now...:deep_facepalm:

I'm legitimately curious as to why you believe it would be 'poor form' for a Christian to sue someone? Are Christians supposed to be pacifist? Is your perspective that Christians are not allowed to protect themselves and enforce their rights like any other person is allowed to?

And even if it is just about money are Christians not entitled to the pursuit of money/wealth just like everyone else? Or do some of you think the Bible admonishes Christians to be poor, prudent or adverse about money? No hate, im just curious.

Cause it seems that anytime a Christian or a "man of God" gets money, people grab their pitchforks and like there is something legitimately wrong with Christians obtaining wealth and being shrewd in business.

Its like the sentiment in: "God forbid a that a man of cloth gets paid, or gets rich, but porn stars and hoes in Vegas just need to fill out their 1040-ez and its all good!"

Flame may not be a household name, but Lecrae IS to a certain degree. Lecrae may not be as big as Katty Perry, but he is a HUGE Christian crossover artist and was making major industry waves around the time Katy Perry was hot. He won the Grammy Award for best Gospel album (2013), which is 'coincidentally' the same year Katy Perry released "Dark horse" so its not too far fetched to consider that some "creative borrowing" might have take place. Especially given the fact that they might assumed that since their music is basically laced with pegan deity worship, and the fact Gospel is so obscure to the average pop audience, that they figured no one would notice.

Hilariously and ironically enough Katy Perry comes from a Christian music background, so the notion that her and Max Martin are unfamiliar with the Christian music or Gospel genres is both laughable and ridiculous.

Assume nothing, avoid your own biases, and do your research people.

    sorry about the massive size...

My intent wasn't to make any religious statements, and I think its against forum policy but this is where my sue thought came from:

Your comments about Christians getting money I think are out of context here

This is disgusting. & I don't even like Perry. On another level, christians shouldn't go around suing people like this. The songs sound nothing alike besides the cadence. If this is the standard people are allowed to sue for then expect 9 billion other artists to be in court for infringement.
