Dude are you living in my brain? I absolutely love The Sundays and I thought the same thing about Twin Peaks when I first saw it. It had such atmosphere that it was literally palpable. If contemporary music is going down the drain it is the fault of society as well as Hollywood. Society for not taking an interest in culture and buying the crap that they keep dishing out. If people keep buying it, they'll keep making it. Hollywood is also completely devoid of any fucking ideas and they are just interested in recouping investments. That's why I live in the past.

Here's to culture. May you always slake your thirst in its cool waters.

    Wow, nice thread!

This is my all time favourite song by The Cure.
I can listen to it for hours. Very touching.
    "We shall be together......."

Thanks Alraun. Glad to have you with us. :mates:
That song, as well as my selection Fascination Street, is actually off of Disintegration the album that I suggested to SAiNT. The whole album is simply genius so if you can pick up the 3CD remastered version as you get a lot of extras. I see you've posted the live version. Nice!

I'm sorry I haven't responded to the Music Can Be A Weapon thread yet. With all the conversations popping up I am spread a little thin at the moment. That's not even taking into account the other stuff I've been neglecting in the real world. I certainly will reply soon though.

With my next few selections I am going to be taking us on a detour through darker territories so be warned.

A little background on the band name. They chose it as a statement against animal cruelty and experimentation. The genre itself overturned many conventions in music and culture creating anti-music/counterculture. This is a genre and a music that are actually about something. If there is one song that fully encapsulates my view of society and the agony of life and the human condition this would definitely be it. This will change you. This is Industrial. :headbang:

With their stream of consciousness lyrics and imagery Skinny Puppy paints a picture of decaying society, animal torture and the futility of existence:

    Shred and tear
    Radiation vapor air
    It's the fear
    So unclear
    Man in motion
    Going nowhere
    In our homes
    Stuck in the face
Spread the dirt to the populace
    Yellow journal yellow journal
Set the pace feel the rage
    Manifestations of a sort
    So insidious off the point
    Simple solution
    Never confusion
Sport a gun kill a cop
    Crazy world of weary thought
    So receive me had enough
    Lock me up
    Lock me up

    The bible screams
    Announce your faith
    Mutterings of death to bring
    Suffocate a new born thing
    Degradation of an age

    Hot to Assimilate
    [?] (go nowhere)
    Rot or Annihilate
    (tell yourself)
    Hot to assimilate
    (search your soul)
    We'll rot or annihilate

    Agony
    Inner thinking brain
    Clanking the chains
    Growing pain

    "is it safe?"

    Bloodshot

    Mutterings of death to bring
    Suffocate a new born thing
    Degradation of an age
    Venereal
    It's all sensation
    Protect design
    The moral plan
    Infallible
    No propaganda
    Completely black
    With no steps back
    Agony profusely stains
The inner thinking of the brain
    Clanking the chains
    Experiments with groans of pain
It's all preferred that no one blames
The terror in an animal screams
    In cages our future
    The answer's insane

    Rot and assimilate
    (show no faith)
    So hot to annihilate
    Rot and assimilate
    So hot to annihilate

    Reach for an airway
    Death death death...

The first 20-30 seconds of this clip has no audio and this is tantamount to sacrilege. I tried to find another copy but to no avail. Why two videos of this band? Skinny Puppy, enough said. :headbang: :

right on catalyst! Skinny Puppy was my favorite band in the early mid 90's next to Public Enemy (terminator X's dj skills were amazing) KMFDM and Ministry- I used to fall asleep to the album "Last Rights" by Skinny Puppy....guaranteed crazy dreams- i loved all the albums but last rights really stuck with me...and later the side projects by both Cevin Key and Ogre were monumental..

here is one of my favorite Skinny Puppy songs: WORLOCK- its age restricted on you tube lol so i wont post a live link

    "The Future"

Give me back my broken night
my mirrored room, my secret life
    it's lonely here,
there's no one left to torture
    Give me absolute control
    over every living soul
    And lie beside me, baby,
    that's an order!
Give me crack and anal sex
Take the only tree that's left
and stuff it up the hole
    in your culture
Give me back the Berlin wall
give me Stalin and St Paul
    I've seen the future, brother:
    it is murder.

Things are going to slide, slide in all directions
    Won't be nothing
    Nothing you can measure anymore
The blizzard, the blizzard of the world
    has crossed the threshold
    and it has overturned
    the order of the soul
    When they said REPENT REPENT
    I wonder what they meant
    When they said REPENT REPENT
    I wonder what they meant
    When they said REPENT REPENT
    I wonder what they meant

You don't know me from the wind
you never will, you never did
    I'm the little jew
    who wrote the Bible
I've seen the nations rise and fall
I've heard their stories, heard them all
but love's the only engine of survival
Your servant here, he has been told
to say it clear, to say it cold:
    It's over, it ain't going
    any further
And now the wheels of heaven stop
you feel the devil's riding crop
    Get ready for the future:
    it is murder

Things are going to slide ...

There'll be the breaking of the ancient
    western code
Your private life will suddenly explode
    There'll be phantoms
There'll be fires on the road
    and the white man dancing
    You'll see a woman
    hanging upside down
her features covered by her fallen gown
and all the lousy little poets
    coming round
tryin' to sound like Charlie Manson
    and the white man dancin'

Give me back the Berlin wall
Give me Stalin and St Paul
    Give me Christ
    or give me Hiroshima
    Destroy another fetus now
    We don't like children anyhow
    I've seen the future, baby:
    it is murder

Things are going to slide ...

When they said REPENT REPENT ...

nice huh? every song is like dark poetry detailing the fall of man and modern society

and i always thought Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds had the same kinda vibe as Cohen...

Tree don't care what the little bird sings
We go down with the dew in the morning light
The tree don't know what the little bird brings
We go down with the dew in the morning
    And we breathe, it in
There is no need to forgive
Breathe, it in, there is no need to forgive
    (again)
The trees will stand like pleading hands
We go down with the dew in the morning light
The trees all stand like pleading hands
We go down with the dew in the morning light
    And we breathe it in
There is no need to forgive
Breathe it in, there is no need to forgive
    (again)

The trees will burn with blackened hands
We return with the light of the evening
The trees will burn blackened hands
Nowhere to rest, with nowhere to land

And we know who you are
And we know where you live
And we know there's no need to forgive

And we know who you are
And we know where you live
And we know there's no need to forgive

And we know who you are
And we know where you live
And we know there's no need to forgive

And we know who you are
And we know where you live
And we know there's no need to forgive again

"Now is the only thing that's real." "The police used to watch over the people now they're watching the people." I know Worlock well. It's one of my favorites songs by them and the horror video is awesome. The song is off of the album Rabies (1989) and I actually still have the CD. Crazy that you brought up Cohen as I was going to post him up after I took my little dark detour. Feridan also beat me to the punch with his The Sundays collage. Nick Cave is really great too and I have his whole back catalog. The Lost Highway soundtrack is indeed very diverse and interesting material with everyone from Bowie to Rammstein.

I guess it's as good a time as any to drop this puppy on you guys. Sorry I couldn't find a YouTube video of the studio version of the song that wasn't blocked by a billion copyright douchebags so I had to go with Vimeo. Who is it? You know...everybody knows.
    Leonard Cohen - Everybody Knows
Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
    That's how it goes
    Everybody knows

Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
    Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died

    Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
    And a long stem rose
    Everybody knows

Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful
Ah give or take a night or two
    Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
    Without your clothes
    And everybody knows

    Everybody knows, everybody knows
    That's how it goes
    Everybody knows

    Everybody knows, everybody knows
    That's how it goes
    Everybody knows

And everybody knows that it's now or never
Everybody knows that it's me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah when you've done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old black joe's still pickin' cotton
    For your ribbons and bows
    And everybody knows

And everybody knows that the plague is coming
Everybody knows that it's moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there's gonna be a meter on your bed
    That will disclose
    What everybody knows

And everybody knows that you're in trouble
Everybody knows what you've been through
From the bloody cross on top of cavalry
    To the beach of Malibu
    Everybody knows it's coming apart
Take one last look at this sacred heart
    Before it blows
    And everybody knows

    Everybody knows, everybody knows
    That's how it goes
    Everybody knows

This next number is the epitome of classy and cool. I bet it looked weird when I was rocking it in my younger years. People must have been like who the hell is this kid? That's okay...I've always had my own style and I never really cared what people thought anyway.

This next number makes me well up with emotion. A song that captures in agonizing detail the dissolution of love. The lyrics are beautiful and broken at the same time. This was released in the same year that Ian Curtis would commit suicide. :(
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHYOXyy1ToI
    When routine bites hard,
    And ambitions are low.
    And resentment rides high,
    But emotions won't grow.
    And we're changing our ways,
    Taking different roads.

Love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again.

Why is the bedroom so cold?
    Turned away on your side.
    Is my timing that flawed?
    Our respect run so dry?
    Yet there's still this appeal,
That we've kept through our lives.

Love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again.

Do you cry out in your sleep?
    All my failings exposed...
Gets a taste in my mouth
    As desperation takes hold.
Why is it something so good
    Just can't function no more?

Love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear up apart again.

Here's another favorite of mine. I believe it was first released when they went under the name Warsaw:

good call on "everybody knows"- always gives me chills when i hear that song... also, i was just going to post that exact same song form Joy Divison...crazy!! Man just listening to it again makes me have bleak thoughts of teenage angst and suicidal thoughts over breaking up with girls LOL

ok, im pulling a 180 and changing it up- while still keeping to the topic of the 80's (which i diverged from earlier heh heh)

i just want to have a discussion about New Wave of the 80's

i was pretty young in the 80's, so i missed the whole "New Wave" movement, but later on in college as i studied music theory and the history of music (so as to better to be able to create "new" music) i kind of focused more on goth/industrial/thrash metal/hiphop/reggae/dancehall/dub of the late 80's

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uhzqny6rU28

As Pee-Wee Herman said in Cheech and Chong's Nice Dreams: "New wave... The Future of rock and roll... And Bruce Springsteen's fucking it all up."

It seems new wave is ... kind of ambiguous -

New wave music was first considered the same as punk rock before being identified as a genre in its own right, incorporating aspects of electronic and experimental music, mod subculture, disco and 1960s pop music. Common characteristics of new wave music, aside from its punk influences, include the use of synthesizers and electronic productions, the importance of styling and the arts, as well as a great amount of diversity.

In my research it seems quality varied greatly too, for every Gary Numan, there is a Frakie Goes to Hollywood , for every Bauhaus there is a Bananarama, for every Sisters of Mercy there is a Kajagoogoo lol

So, what did New Wave mean to you at the time? Or mean to you now? it seems to me there was an explosion of creativity in the early 80's- after years of basic rock and disco new sounds were everywhere... maybe it was the advent of synthesizers? The paranoia and fear of Commies vs Capitalism and Nuclear War? Disillusionment with "america" after Vietnam? the growth of the 80's corporations and mass modern consumerism?

Music historian Vernon Joynson states that new wave emerged in the UK in late 1976, when many bands began disassociating themselves from punk. Music that followed the anarchic garage band ethos of the Sex Pistols was distinguished as "punk", while music that tended toward experimentation, lyrical complexity, or more polished production, came to be categorized as "new wave". In the US, the first new wavers were the not-so-punk acts associated with the New York club CBGB, such as Talking Heads, Mink DeVille and Blondie.

The catch-all nature of new wave music has been a source of much confusion and controversy. The 1985 discography Who's New Wave in Music listed artists in over 130 separate categories. The New Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock uses the term "virtually meaningless" in its definition of New Wave, while Allmusic mentions "stylistic diversity"

Whatever the reason, it seems like a fun time to be making music...

a consensus has developed that new wave ended in the mid-1980s, knocked out by various guitar-driven rock music reacting against new wave

speaking of Gary Numan- here's a nice composition from his amazing Telekon album:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOwwW9SOoOw

thanks for reading my rant, im extremely high and rambling lol

Frito please don't feel bad for being high and talking about music. That's one of the finer things in life and exactly what this thread is for. So pack up that bong or spark up that spliff...it's go time.

I'm also finding it crazy how in tune we are with each other here. It's like there's some kind of synergy going on and we're feeding into this amazing moment together. People would post songs that I was just about to post but it wasn't something likely such as something in the same genre but a completely different genre altogether. I was just THINKING about Twin Peaks and then next thing I know someone brings up David Lynch and then we're off. And by the way I always have bleak thoughts of angst whether I'm listening to Joy Division or not. :lmao:

To answer your question: I personally hate umbrella terms. If it weren't for the fact that genres are useful for finding something I wouldn't use them at all. Particularly since nowadays there can be many genres on one album so it makes the whole idea ludicrous. I was also young in the 80s and in fact I believe I'm even younger than you are. However, I was listening to a lot of these bands when I wasn't even a teenager if you can believe that. Man seeing CBGB in your post really brought back some memories. To me coming up new wave was pretty much everything in the 80s that was poppy or synthy in any way and I think that's how the people involved in the scene must have felt because apparently everything was considered New Wave.

Interesting tid-bit about another favorite Blue Velvet. Lynch wanted Isabella Rossellini to sing Song to the Siren by This Mortal Coil, but couldn't get the rights. Badalementi then composed "Mysteries of Love", sung by Julee Cruise.

    Here's the scene everybody wants:

And of course the other one, but I'm not going to post that. :bleh:

That was Ferdidan with another great pick and some insight to go along with it.
Crazy but I was just listening to them last night. Amazing band.

The following is off of the tensest album that The Cure would ever produce which is a shame because I would really like to have seen where this went. I am of course referring to 1982's Pornography. It was a complete 180 from their previous album Faith and this is a true testament to the band's depth and ingenuity. Why are we revisiting an artist we've covered before? Because it's Monday, it's raining and music is the only thing I still feel. This song was jostling in the back of mind and I just had to let it out:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSr0aeHYMSc

This next number brings me back to my youth when I was way too high looking up at the stars with my girl late at night. Such a great song:
