When I add a copy of the same VSTi, both with different presets only one of them is being outputted. This happens only on some VSTi's, is there anyway to have both copies play without having to add another track.

If you use FL then you can try to connect both of them with Patcher

He is using Reaper I presume, As this post is into Reaper section.

No, as far as I know you cant. You have to create another track for the second vsti, which have it's advantages.
On the other hand, if you want to edit both tracks in relation one to the other, you can see both tracks together in the piano toll or the score view.

I had the same problem in REAPER. Then new awesome tool from Nektar came out called "Nektarine". Basically a plugin which allows Multi-mode with layering of up to 16 plugins per instance.
I'm using Nektar Panorama P4 and this does wonderful job when you want to add 2 or more VSTi instuments on same track. Different patches from same instument also working lovely.

I don't know if it works with other MIDI controllers than Nektar, but you can check it out HERE

I dont think it is freely available unless you are a registered Panorama user.

If you add another track for your second vsti and make a send pre fx from first to second, you don't even need to copy the MIDI item.
This way you can adjust pan and volume individually for both tracks and even add different additional fx plugs like eq, dly, reverb...
I see no benefit in your approach. Care to elaborate?

My main thought process is to have the layered synths for the melody or bassline on one track with different sounds then use a compressor to glue them together, now that I'm thinking about it more it doesn't really make sense for me to have them on the same track, which will give me less control of the dynamics. I thought the idea that I was thinking of could work without me having to do extra steps.

I've realized that there are lots of useful workarounds, which I'll have to consider using such as effect racks, sending and receiving to another track.

Olymoon, is the technique you mentioned called "ghost notes".

No, he meant you could copy the MIDI item and open and edit both at the same time. But as I already wrote this isn't even necessary.

No, as Avenger said , I was speaking about having 2 identical tracks with one synth in each.
Then if needed edit them both at the same time.

Sorry for my misunderstanding, I'm not sure if I should leave this thread open, if there are others who have another technique they'd like to share or have it closed.

Thank you to everyone for helping.

Create a new track above the VSTi track, assign the MIDI input & make it a folder (the new track).
Create a new track inside the folder & move the copied VSTi here or, create a new instance.

Now both VSTi tracks should be receiving input from the input assigned in the folder track.

This is the simplest method without creating a complicated routing structure.

Stacking VSTi plugins as an FX Chain only works when the plugins output MIDI directly (MIDI thru).

    doesn't sound convenient,
you should send midi to multiple separate tracks within a folder for maximum control and blend options
