music theory is a misread concept.......... everything about humans comes from experience.....theory is as MMJ tries to point out...simply a way to contextualise and explore WHAT IS!!!

You can make electronic music and have these 3 elements.Electronic music is not all about drums!

My music has chord progressions, melody, bass, arpeggios,Fxs and drums.Like in any music.

But yes electronic is mostly less complex than some genres like classical music or jazz for example.

But is it complexity that does a memorable or nice song?I don't think.

I like a lot electronic music,I like the huge variety of timbres you can find with synthesizers.
On the opposite for me a guitar always sounds like a guitar,I find its sound boring because we know its sound too much. But I find some "guitar-based music" interseting and beautiful too.

And you could make ultra complex music with electrnic music if you wish, there are not any limitation!

A guitarist needs to master his guitar, music theory and have inspiration,an "electronic producer" needs to master music theory(quite in an easier level), synthesis, his DAW,composition(and so he needs inspiration too),arrangement, mixing and mastering.

I don't find one of both easier than the other. Both needs talent and work according to me.

Yes the timbre is separate from the harmony.
Electronic music is based in timbre only.
My point was that the particular music structure presented in electronic music is missing the harmonic component as history has presented that genre. I myself don't make electronic music that way I make it harmonic I get you .
    About complexity.
To me it's like a motion picture amount of motion on the screen at once.
Say a man sitting on a bench reading newspaper and the motion is still. That is like little complexity in music ( not lot happening
Now image a moment later black van pulls up soldiers in black with guns jump out and start firing
The man dives into the bushes and attempts to cut down back alleyway to escape.
This is lot of motion on the screen and is the same as complex music.
So to me music that is complex vs stripped down
That is no measure of how good music is
In fact you should have fluctuations of lot motion and less motion and different times.
    However.
Some things like typical electronic music or rock etc.
It's not that they have little motion that would be fine , it's that there ends up being no musical content at all barely except for drums .
If you tried converting that to a piano let's say nothing is taking place it's one step past silence
When you look at what IS happening in electronic music. The drums us what is taking place .
The rest just thickens up the drums. Rock and metal are guilty of that also .
Roots and fifths are not harmony they don't express anything happening at all.

I think you are confused mean no harm.

Sound design and working with timbre ,
Production , engineering , artist development and management, live sound and stage production .
Studio engineer , composer, writer, instrument musicians,
    These all aspects of music.
A genre is just a way to categorize the
    Monetization
    of music for purchasing .
Genre has no connection to knowledge of the separate music fields and jobs.
Yes, if your just copying some other musical thing generically you could say
" I'm making electrinica so all I have to do is buy a laptop from a pawn shop for 50 bux
Download a free DAW and hit either s Ted button or green button, now I am s producer and dj it's all I need to know"

The notes you play don't make the music alone. You must take in consideration its own "sound"(lol...).If this instrument has very short amplitude without echo/slap delay or long reverb, yes you need more notes.

You could say the same thing about a guitarist who sing on a 3 notes riff.

You can't generalize everything.I think in every genre you'll find some talented people and interesting music.

    Sure, you cannot generalize ANYTHING
You can only describe a specific circumstance, and in that specific context talk about something.
Reality is more complex than our brain is.
Sure you will find talented people in every genre,.
Because what a genre is, a term to categorize things for purchasing.
But when you zoom in on the people making music and zoom in on the music .
There no real connection to genre.
Genre is not a aspect of music.
It's a cultural description of category's related to timbre and intent.
For example pop music as a genre means music made to make money with .
Electronica as a genre means synthetic timbres.
Metal as a genre means heavy catharsis and dark.
But all those things have nothing to do with music itself or people ability.

The knowledge music music theory for the musician, is equally needed for any genre.
Knowing how music itself works how melody harmony and rhythm work
Is just a valuble to a dj or rock guitarist or pianist or soundtracks or rapper any area you choose .
Whatever knowledge the person is missing is a negative compared to them having it.
You can take the music knowledge I present in my threads and create the world's best pop music and become famous or you can take it for underground metal. You can make trap that's better than ever heard before or you can make chamber music . You can create a rapper orchestra with 7 rappers rapping in harmony over a beat or re- invent the blues and jazz with electronic and 808s .
It's all your choice as a music maker do you want aspects of how it works to get a mystery to you, or do you want knowledge of the way music works.

    Hello,
    Interesting article.
But it is the basic of music theory. (Solfège). An easy way to find some cool chord's progression is the circle of Fifth.
Otherwise, very cool way to teach theories to peoples who don't know a lot about solfège.

    Thank you.
    It’s refreshing for memory.
