    Hey, people

Can someone tell me what I need to achieve this kind of sounds in a bass guitar?

I mean specifically the type of bass I need, effects, pickups, etc., and referring more to the kind of sounds, not to the quality, but advices are welcome. Can i get it with any kind of bass, or I need an specific one?

I know nothing about bass guitars, so if you have the time, a little lesson would be great.

oh! and I am very interested in the technique from minute 2:10, is thumping or slap? what do I need to achieve it?

    Thanks you.

Bass with active pickups, compression and overdrive (probably a mix of DI with overdriven amp), and most importantly, a good bassist that plays with his fingers.

It seems that op I asking how to achieve this sound with a real bass, not with a plug-in. That would explain why he/she posted in the bass guitar section, it in the working with sound one.

If you want it in a real bass, you have to use new bass strings and active split-coil pickups.
Also you have to use an overdrive pedal with light settings, for example :

2:10 in the video you posted is called slapping, he's predominantly using pops. In this technique, a bassist replaces the usual plucking motion of the index and middle fingers with "slaps" and "pops". To achive that, a bassist uses the thumb to strike the strings (usually the lower E and A strings) near the base of the guitar's neck. Then, a bassist will use the index or middle finger of the plucking hand to snap the strings (usually the higher D and G strings) away from bass' body, causing them to bounce off the fretboard.

Are you really sure about this? Just asking because afaik the Dingwall NG-3 series doesn't have those.
Also I wonder if this sound can't be made with a passive humbucker.

This are the pickups in the NG series.
As you can see they are active split-coils.

Active pickups tend to be bright, clear and snappy sounding. In my opinion, the real key to the 'funky'-lightly overdriven bass sound is the pedal. That's why I like the sound of Darkglass pedals.

@Antikythera Mechanism @No Avenger Also I almost forget that the man himself, Jacob Umansky uses the pedal that I was mentioning before. May this video guide you to his bass tone settings:

If you see there in front of him, he has two bass effect pedals. Hard to say what the are. Very bright setting on the guitar tone and pickups. Brand new round wound strings. I use a bass synth pedal and an octave pedal with my electric bass, sometimes a hint of chorus pedal. Any decent sounding bass with new round wounds will get you this tone, add some EQ, and then be a badass player, and you will have it.

It's a REAL bass sound he wishes to emulate. In places, it is difficult to hear the separation because there is so much going on.
In the slap section, it sounds like a Musicman 4-string Stingray copy but not as good. I own one so I know that sound intimately.
So you can get all of the sounds he has probably with a Stingray (An older one because they're better and have woodiness as well as metallic sounds, and the 5-string Musicman's do not sound the same). It is a Dingwall and I've played one and it's a personal choice but I find them lacking in warmth when you need it.
There is no 'one size fits all'. But for this and ONLY this, a Stingray with all 3 EQ knobs will give you all the tones I hear in this video.
You could go Alembic too or simply buy a Dingwall which came after both I have mentioned and was designed on much of the tones of both basses I mentioned.

EDIT: The bright and warm sounds are here in an excerpt from one short full-on jazz-alternative CD I did 10 years ago.

Personally, I'd just hire the guy. 100% the best way to get HIS bass, HIS sound, and whatever else that is HIS. And while he's there ask him a few questions about HIS technique and gear. ...be YOURSELF and express YOURSELF. get a rig that suits and sounds like YOURSELF that way you will always be the best YOU there is.
