just want to let you know that the more inernal hdd and external usb devices you have connected beware the power supply will fail quicker. standard cases are about 450 watt but i suggest that a 1000 watt power supply will save u in terms of this message i got. "USB Over Current Status Detected". my power supply was gone. be safe if you have the money and about 7 internal HDD do go for a 1000 watt supply they are about $80 to $120 for a decent brand...i also noticed that my overall performance has increased loading time is s much quicker..so if u can't buy an SSD go for 1000 psu...mind you i can no longer use my 4 usb in front panel of case it's all damaged from the overload

what strength psu have u got??? how many hdd and devices you connect?

anymore then 4 hdd + all external devices give the 1000 a try but 500 is ok for 4 or under + external devices.

my 2 cents. *yes* because it all runs faster i was amazed.

You can have a 600W - 850W it really boost the performance.
I have a 500W with 4 HD:s a midikeyboard a nocturne and used to have korg nanopad and i have no problem whatsoever.
I did however had a 450W before and that failed after a year or so.
But since i can have all those things connected with just 50W more than before imagine what 200W can do
If you really need 1000W you got to have many many things connected.
I just bought a 750W but haven´t installed it yet i think it will be ok for me

I had all sorts of problems (growing as time went on) with 450w. I upped to a robust and steady 750w and everything works like a charm.

I have a Corsair HX 1000W. It's perfect to drive all my SATA drives, USB Midikeyboards, Soundboard, and It gives enough juice to drive my two dual GPU ATI cards.

Since a single USB (at least 2.0) port supplies max. 2.5W (two of them bundled together 5W, with a 1A (poly-)fuse on most controllers), you can infer yourself what a sheer nonsense you just wrote.

Btw: a stonger PSU will never (remember NEVER!) boost the performance.
For a single CPU / single GPU machine a 450W one is more than enough in most cases. Just be sure to get a good one (Enermax, Corsair etc.).

Totally true except that you have to read manual instruction for your GPU power consumption requirements. If you are proud owner of one of today’s monsters I will not go under 600W + 50W for water cooler etc.

In my opinion "more is enough". Meaning to have little headroom being calculated at your current needs. You can calculate your PSU need for example with eXtreme Power Supply Calculator Lite (http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp). Try possible variations you might possible conside in future. While selecting the PSU, remember not to pick the most cheapest, they prolly don't last. It can be long term purchase, if chosen right. And remember to look amp values for power rails beside wattage.

I had Antec PSU, with 450 watts. Really notorius one that came with Antec Sonata 2 case. Like most of them have blown by now as nothing to do with watts to run out. May I add damn blown PSU had caused some rather strange unstability defects before it blowed, so it was kinda good it did. After Antec I got Seasonic 620 watts PSU, which have worked like dream.
