Depending on who you ask, the advantage of technology based on artificial or machine intelligence could be a topsy-turvy funhouse mirror world — even in some very fundamental ways.

“I actually think 10 years from now, you won’t be listening to music,” is a thing venture capitalist Vinod Khosla said onstage today during a fireside chat at Creative Destruction Lab’s second annual Super Session event.

Instead, he believes we’ll be listening to custom song equivalents that are automatically designed specifically for each individual, and tailored to their brain, their listening preferences and their particular needs.

Khosla noted that AI-created music is already making big strides — and it’s true that it’s come a long way in the past couple of years, as noted recently by journalist Stuart Dredge writing on Medium.

As Dredge points out, one recent trend is the rise of mood or activity-based playlists on Spotify and channels on YouTube. There are plenty of these types of things where the artist, album and song name are not at all important, or even really surfaced. Not to mention that there’s a big financial incentive for an entity like Spotify to prefer machine-made alternatives, as it could help alleviate or eliminate the licensing costs that severely limit their ability to make margin on their primary business of serving up music to customers.

AI-generated chart toppers and general mood music is one thing, but a custom soundtrack specific to every individual is another. It definitely sidesteps the question of what happens to the communal aspect of music when everyone’s music-replacing auditory experience is unique to the person. Guess we’ll find out in 10 years.

This is not going to happen. This can not happen because what someone prefers to listen has in most cases nothing to do with his particular "needs" (whatever this means :dunno:). There are again some terms used of which someone doesn't thought about one minute what this shall even mean.

His "opinions" (why is everyone always talking about opinions? Are they too lazy to get their facts? All I hear is "imhoimhoimho" all day long. Who cares about their opinions if they are not relevant?) are of course pretty much not foundated especially not for his hypothesis of this "brain, particular needs"-stuff. Algorithms for what someone prefers are already there. But the other stuff is nonsense. There were so many predictions in the past of stuff going on in the future and they were wrong in 99% of the cases just because people talk about something they have no clue about.

Ai is still sorting samples, kinda like the hoarders we have around here:rofl:

Give it another 80 years if you ask me:guru:

But yeah eventually it will be a possibility, I do think Spotify will not make it that far.

Interesting to think about, but given that what I want to hear next is frequently something that is nothing like anything I've heard before, for me personally that idea falls flat on it face immediately. I am a fan of Artificial Intelligence, and I have (I think) a realistic idea of its limitations, and I certainly know when I don't want it!

A nice request - in fact a challenge I think. I'm looking forward to hearing responses.
In my previous post I was already objecting to the idea of AI selecting which human-generated music I should listen to. I just don't want my musical exploration to be steered by anyone or anything. Even more strongly, the idea of me passionately listening to anything composed by AI seems too far-fetched to take seriously - but I'll add it to my list to check out if and when anything interesting arrives. Conversely, the techie in me would be fascinated to dissect an AI generated piece of music, and to dissect how the AI composed it, but this musical-techie interest would probably have almost no connection to 'listening pleasure'.

:) So, You reckon I lied about my being a fan of AI in order to avoid being punished by a future world-dominating AI.
Why not - a cheap insurance policy me thinks. Maybe I should panic and delete my other remarks criticising AI. :winker:

Isn't that part of the pleasure of music to hear something outside your experience or perhaps an alien genre and enjoy it? I thought that the creative process is less to do with making money with an end product, and more about the need for the artist to externalise something trapped inside called creativity. Artificial insemination has it's place but in my opinion is far less fun than the old fashioned way.

  15. There are some commonalities among all AI music and they are:
    1. Fairly akin to karaoke tracks.
    2. Very similar to general styles.
    3. Their makers are not real musicians but just style copiers.
    4. Lack any smart structure.
    5. They are not made for serious music listeners.

My advice is to encode your music to be kept away from the access of AI crooks. They are not adroit at discovering encoded music.

Music is about the message, and translating personal emotions into sound, via a carefully chosen sound palette. This is what connects with an audience. Machine music will always be random in nature, and nobody is going to hero worship a computer.

AI is human made. Unless it's Frank Farian algorithm (or producers alike), it will take more years for this to be true, imho. Interesting thought and not something impossible to be done. Just look at Band-in-a-Box today..

A computer can not laugh but it can be funny.

It's only relevant what the audience feels, not whats the technique behind it.
It's basically saying: "I need my pc to transport some (special) feelings to me but I do not worship my pc"

It's not wrong but it is important to be a bit more detailed in this situation.

IMO, AI will develop incredible song forms and arrangements based on genre you want. Then, you just "paint by color", and re-record /re-program using human sound design or human performance while slightly altering the composition here and there.

I would NOT be surprised if this is what SONY BMI and all of the big recording companies are doing this already (like a SKUNKWORKS project lol) to give extra support and options to their $$$ making song writing super teams. A super computer dedicated to analyzing song structure, key, etc... etc... and then crunching numbers to come up with another composition that is similar or improved to include all midi data and a HQ reference using VSTis and/or a myriad of connected hardware workstations and modules. Then, let the artist tweak to taste with little effort, straight into "paint by number".

    Anything is possible.

Sorry if this is not appropriate (and I've never tried this before) I just quoted myself from another thread. That's because I think what I said about AI in that other thread is actually relevant to this thread, if only to draw attention to just how much, and just how quickly, AI developments will surprise us. None of my enthusiasm for AI-and-MusicTech shown in the quote prevents me from being very cynical about AI-and-music.

Just came back to check if I get any rate rating for my comment. None after 30 min. Maybe a little longer..
