    I'm running a similar spec (different motherboard) and tried both win7 and w10 on it about six months ago and, after tweaking both of them as far as able, for me win7 was WAY more stable for DAW work. It's a bit fiddly to get win7 going with a x299 board (on a NVMe drive at any rate...) but well worth the effort ultimately. Win10 is too intrusive AND i found it to be flaky as hell with it's handling of DPC - all merely for a bit of eye candy... seriously w7 is a still the way to go at this time imho.

    @DelveRob don't listen to @Paul Pi he sounds just like that crazy Russian fool that calls himself @The Pirate, and always is recommending Windows 7. Next thing you know they are going to convince you that windows 7 Lite is the way to go.

    windows 10, unless you want to keep ur pc offline then win 7, as im sure you are aware support for win 7 stop next year, so if ur gonna go with win 7 do it now, grab all the updates while you can and keep it offline, you might have some problems keeping offline as some software needs net connection to auth or update, but i liked win 7 to be fair, and i never had issues with 10 so far either, all about choice.

    Who is caring about support for yor OS? what planet are you from?
    If it somehow fails just do a backup of everything important then format c: and install it again
    First thing i do when i install windows is turn of the windows update system
    As it is for AUDIO i am using it and so are most ppl in here including OP
    Not a bloody browser gaming or anything other crap related
    So why do you need Win 10?
    It is more or less useless without internet and still why should you even be on internet with your music machine?
    Do you need to check your forum messeges or social media sites every min?
    If so use your smartphone

    I tried both still prefer Win 7 or even better XP but since its hard to not want 64 bit i am on Win 7 for now.
    Been doing music on windows computers since early 90,s
    I think i got a good idea of whats work or not
    Windows is becoming more and more crappy after every update after XP
    As it will more and more be like Osx and still it want getting a better audio driver support for developer as microsoft wants lots of cash to let developers sign their drivers
    Thats why no audiocard developer ever sign their drivers and you get a bloody pop up screen when you install the drivers and also WHY drivers sometimes not work propertly.

    How about try out both - then make your own decision :)

  11. I have exactly this configuration using an Asus x299. I use Win 10 booting off a Samsung 960 Pro in around three seconds.

    No problems.

    go hackintosh, Windows is bloated waste :chilling:
    here's my spec, quite similar to yours,
    working flawlessly with MacOS, less issues compared to Windows 10 and even Windows 7 actually

    btw I agree with @kims

  14. Software developers, who can drop Windows 7 from support faster than a ferret up a rabbit's backside.

    I'm thinking here of Steinberg, who claimed Cubase SX wouldn't run on Windows 98 only Windows XP, until Apple bought Logic from Emagic and threw 70,000 PC users off their DAW. Then, suddenly, Cubase SX1 could support Windows 98 after all, as long as you didn't want support.

    It's one of the worst ongoing costs to software development, is support. Windows 7? Hit the road buddy. January next year, scrape 'em off time.

    Hackintosh? Where did that come from? The OP wants a Windows OS. He came looking for oranges and you are trying to sell apples (no pun intended) Next, someone else is going to recommend Linux.

    True. Possible. Yet it is not going to happen overnight. The share of Windows 7 users is too big. Yes, it will decrease when they cut support but the numbers of Windows 7 users for DAW's is going to hold steady for a while. So developers are not going to cut the hands that feed them. Moreover, with what we have today available for Windows 7 systems we can make music for 10 years without the need for any update from any developer. For music, we don't depend on microfuck to protect us from its own system's vulnerabilities with intrusive updates. All I know is that the majority of crazy problems I see on this Forum are Windows 10 related.

  18. The share of WIndows users is irrelevant. Every developer of size in the WIntel arena is some kind of Microsoft Partner, because being a partner represents a significant andvantage, not least in the cost of tools and support. You can't be a Microsoft Partner with a WIn 7 logo on your product, your website or your support offering after January next year. No way, Jose. They don't want you keeping the single most serious competition to their front line cash cow even a single second longer than possible. It's goodbye Win 7. It will dissapear from the software world like a bad memory.

    You have roughly six months. You keep the DAW, you can keep the plugs and you can keep the network connection, maybe, but anything new? Red sails in the sunset.

    And the single biggest cause of problems in this forum that I can see is idiot related. Almost every time.

    sorry for confusion, I was reacting to OP's question "is good to stay on Win 7 or is better use 10? What you use?"

    let me share a brief story of mine's:
    I was in exact same position as OP years back, so I really understand the OP perhaps even more than anyone else,
    roughly summer 2015 I got my X99-based PC, it was just when Win10 started rolling out, DDR4 appeared, and future of Win7 support was unclear, X99 based platform I got was supposed to be "best of both worlds", and futureproof,
    I obviously went with Win7 I had been familiar with, naturally wanted to test out that-time-fresh-Win10 too,
    after months of testing Win10, I realized I don't want that Win10 mess (or at least not yet) - that was in spring 2016,
    then in autumn 2016 I got a crazy idea to give a try to MacOS, that time MacOS El Capitan was year-old, and so "final" (10.11.6), so I gave it a try - I had literally no experience with MacOS that time, so it was really meant as experiment only, I obviously kept Win7 on different drive,
    few weeks into MacOS I really enjoyed being able to work without problems, so decided to try adjusting my workflows to MacOS - luckily most software is multiplatform nowadays,
    as I've learned a lot since then, I had my hackintosh fully set stable (including rock-solid cpu overclock) in summer 2017,
    meanwhile I was occassionally testing Windows 10 LTSB (1607), it was annoying experience moving "backwards" compared to MacOS,
    in spring 2018 I got NAS so I could have my files accessible regardless of what OS or PC I'd use, making sure in case anything went wrong with the PC I wouldn't loose my files/projects etc..
    in autumn 2018 I decided to upgrade my hackintosh to MacOS High Sierra (again it was year-old "final" version 10.13.6), newer MacOS arrived, with all the knowledge it went pretty much flawless, no issues with apps or hardware,
    and then, in the beginning of 2019, new Win10 LTSC (1809-based) started rolling out, I went for it with hopes for giving Win10 a try again, 2-year newer version has proven to offer nothing worthy over old 1607 though, so I made it just an occassional-gaming-system and arrived back to MacOS being primary OS for my workstation.....

    why did I write all that here?
    it's important to understand OS is just a means/medium to let us use what we need, it's the software and hardware which lets us be creative, not OS - therefore only true task for OS is not to annoy us and support our software and hardware - way to figure out? try various options, decide, and then use whatever you're comfortable with,
    as you can see my "journey" has taken almost 4 years already and things keep changing anyway;
    futureproof-ness? I'd say nonsense, there's constantly something new going on, so I highly recommend having 2 OSes ready to use - one "the older-but-stable" and one "the new-n-fancy-shizz";
    I can smell ARM on the horizon, burning Intel and AMD to ashes, I pretty much expect end of Win7 support also be end of x86 architecture, so EVERYTHING will change anyway;
    running Win7 and Win10? sure no problem; using only one of them? again, no problem; running Win+Linux or Win+MacOS? why not if it works for me, or you, or anyone :yes:
